Future satellite networks are expected to have thousands of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites orbiting Earth at very high speeds. User equipment (UE) communicating directly with LEO satellites will experience frequent handovers. Managing the handover process is complicated due to the high frequency of handovers and the availability of multiple LEO satellites as handover targets. In addition, as the status of the communication link between a UE and an LEO satellite varies in accordance with the visibility period of the satellite, initiating handovers at the right time will significantly affect the quality of service (QoS) of the communication provided. To address this problem, this work proposes a graph-based customizable handover framework that considers both the handover timing and target while selecting a handover sequence that maintains QoS. A time-based graph is designed where the vertices represent the satellites' instances over a certain period of time and the edges' weights are the customizable handover criteria (i.e., data rate and delay in this work). The appropriate sequence and timing of handovers that fulfill the required QoS are obtained by finding the shortest path in the graph. Discussion and simulations, which were conducted on the Starlink Phase I constellation, show the low complexity and performance advantages of the proposed handover framework. © 2022 IEEE.

The demand for expanding connectivity to remote and isolated areas has intensified the need for global Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. Direct-to-Satellite IoT (DtS-IoT), enabled by advances in nanosatellite technology, allows cost-effective global and direct connectivity between IoT devices and low Earth orbit satellites. However, the most cost-effective DtSIoT networks face resource limitations in user, ground, and space segments, demanding scalable solutions to fully realize their scalability potential. While several resource allocation protocols have been proposed for DtS-IoT, they have mainly been evaluated using static topologies or simplified simulations, overlooking the time-evolving orbital and channel dynamics crucial to DtS-IoT performance. This work bridges this gap by introducing the DtS-IoT Resource Allocation Analysis Framework (DRAAF), a comparison methodology and toolchain for evaluating resource allocation mechanisms in realistic DtS-IoT scenarios. Our method is framed in scalability, energy efficiency, throughput, delay, fairness, and overhead metrics. Utilizing FLoRaSat, a realistic LoRa-based DtS-IoT network simulator, we showcase the methodology with a use case investigating two energy-efficient MAC protocols for DtS-IoT: RESS-IoT and Distributed Queuing (DQ). Results indicate that DQ excels in throughput and node energy efficiency, whereas RESS-IoT reduces delay. Both protocols maintain satellite energy efficiency and enhance fairness in uplink transmissions. These findings underscore the value of our approach in evaluating resource allocation within complex DtS-IoT systems. © 2024 IEEE.

Real-time, accurate, and open source upper-limb musculoskeletal analysis using a single RGBD camera

Biomechanical biofeedback may enhance rehabilitation and provide clinicians with more objective task evaluation. These feedbacks often rely on expensive motion capture systems, which restricts their widespread use, leading to the development of computer vision-based methods. These methods are subject to large joint angle errors, considering the upper limb, and exclude the scapula and clavicle motion in the analysis. Our open-source approach offers a user-friendly solution for high-fidelity upper-limb kinematics using a single low-cost RGBD camera and includes semi-automatic skin marker labeling. Real-time biomechanical analysis, ranging from kinematics to muscle force estimation, was conducted on eight participants performing a hand-cycling motion to demonstrate the applicability of our approach on the upper limb. Markers were recorded by the RGBD camera and an optoelectronic camera system, considered as a reference. Muscle activity and external load were recorded using eight EMG and instrumented hand pedals, respectively. Bland-Altman analysis revealed significant agreements in the 3D markers' positions between the two motion capture methods, with errors averaging 3.3±3.9 mm. For the biomechanical analysis, the level of agreement was sensitive to whether the same marker set was used. For example, joint angle differences averaging 2.3±2.8° when using the same marker set, compared to 4.5 pm 2.9° otherwise. Biofeedback from the RGBD camera was provided at 63 Hz. Our study introduces a novel method for using an RGBD camera as a low-cost motion capture solution, emphasizing its potential for accurate kinematic reconstruction and comprehensive upper-limb biomechanical studies. © 2024, CC BY.

Detecting Poisoning Attacks in Collaborative IDSs of Vehicular Networks Using XAI and Shapley Value

Machine learning-based Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) for vehicle networks can collaborate to enhance their performance by sharing crucial decisions when individual datasets lack diversity, which hinders effective model training. However, such collaborative coalitions are vulnerable to poisoning attacks, where certain members tamper with training data, leading to wrong predictions by the IDSs. The current solutions to this problem have the following issues: (1) They require accessing the training dataset of IDSs, which raises critical privacy concerns; (2) their heavy reliance on voting mechanisms may exclude clients and fail to detect malicious coalition members when attackers form the majority coalition; and (3) the verification process can potentially expose sensitive information, posing privacy risks. To address these issues and improve the resilience of collaborative IDSs against poisoning attacks, we propose a novel approach that combines XAI (Explainable AI) technology with Shapley value from cooperative game theory. XAI justifies IDS decisions, while the Shapley value identifies poisoning attacks in training datasets by capturing contradictions between explanations and decisions. We tested our implementation using a publicly available dataset and various machine learning models (e.g., RFC, SVM, and LSTM). Our results prove highly promising in detecting poisoning attacks and overcoming the flaws in existing solutions.

This paper investigates the physical-layer security (PLS) for an overlay cognitive radio network (CRN). Due to the unreliability of direct communication between the primary users (PUs), secondary users (SUs) are enlisted to facilitate communication between two PUs. As several SUs are available, a particular one is chosen to transmit the PUs' messages in addition to its own. This SU uses the time switching protocol to harvest power from the PU's signal. Additionally, an eavesdropper is available to capture the messages conveyed by the PUs. Given this, the SU receiver collects energy from the relayed messages through the power splitting protocol and utilizes this energy to transmit jamming signals in order to degrade the wiretap channel and improve the privacy of the PUs' communication. The signals' transmission is modeled more realistically under the assumption of cascaded Rayleigh channels. The performance of PLS is evaluated using the probability of a non-zero secrecy capacity and the intercept probability. Moreover, the SUs' Ergodic rate is studied to analyze the impact of this assistance on their transmission reliability.

Thermal Analysis of System in Package Considering Boundary Conditions for Long-Term Reliability Studies

This paper proposes an integrated Foster-based thermal network for a System in Package (SiP) that models thermal interaction between package layers to predict the transient temperature of junctions and interlayer compression in SiP. The critical factors contributing to impedance mismatch are detailed to ensure modeling accuracy. Important factors include the boundary conditions and the interface layer of the thermal material. With the help of the Finite Element Method (FEM) and data curve fitting, thermal parameters are derived and expressed as a function of boundary conditions. The proposed modeling method is demonstrated with 3D heterogeneous System in Package models implemented in Simulink for long-term temperature predictions. Predicted junction and interlayer temperatures show good accuracy, confirmed by reported results obtained by Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The importance of considering the boundary conditions and the materials used in the various interfaces is shown through simulation results. Neglecting one of these key factors, the predicted temperature differs by as much as 14.5 °C in the reported results. The proposed thermal network is consistent with FEA, while computing much faster and producing results that differ by no more than 0.5 °C, unlike previously reported models. Authors

A common approach to explaining NLP models is to use importance measures that express which tokens are important for a prediction. Unfortunately, such explanations are often wrong despite being persuasive. Therefore, it is essential to measure their faithfulness. One such metric is if tokens are truly important, then masking them should result in worse model performance. However, token masking introduces out-of-distribution issues, and existing solutions that address this are computationally expensive and employ proxy models. Furthermore, other metrics are very limited in scope. This work proposes an inherently faithfulness measurable model that addresses these challenges. This is achieved using a novel fine-tuning method that incorporates masking, such that masking tokens become in-distribution by design. This differs from existing approaches, which are completely model-agnostic but are inapplicable in practice. We demonstrate the generality of our approach by applying it to 16 different datasets and validate it using statistical in-distribution tests. The faithfulness is then measured with 9 different importance measures. Because masking is in-distribution, importance measures that themselves use masking become consistently more faithful. Additionally, because the model makes faithfulness cheap to measure, we can optimize explanations towards maximal faithfulness;thus, our model becomes indirectly inherently explainable. © 2023, CC BY-SA.

In 5G network slicing, different services can be modeled as a set of Service Function Chains (SFCs), i.e., graphs of interconnected Virtual Network Functions (VNFs), within a specific network slice. The optimal placement of these SFCs is of paramount importance for the network slice performance. Nonetheless, this problem remains partially unresolved, primarily because it requires managing resources distributed across various Edge and Cloud sites in different geographical locations. Moreover, the complexity of the problem significantly increases when considering constraints such as end-to-end delay, processing delay, VNF affinity, and traffic requirements between VNFs. This paper addresses this problem and proposes both offline and online practical solutions for the Virtual Network Functions Chain Placement Problem (VNF-CPP) that are based on Integer Linear Programming (ILP) and heuristic algorithms. Furthermore, theoretical analysis and simulations are provided to verify the efficiency of the proposed placement algorithms. © 2022 IEEE.

In this work, we enable an 8-way radial combiner with a coaxial interface that revolutionizes high-power handling. Our innovative approach eliminates the need for small gaps near the feeder line, significantly boosting power capabilities, as confirmed through Spark3D software, capable of exceeding 450 KW. Exceptional performance is observed with amplitude and phase balances within ±0.4 dB and ±3 degrees, sustained across input ports throughout the operational range. The output port achieves a return loss exceeding 18 dB, ensuring an impedance bandwidth beyond 40% and stable transmission levels.

A Context-Driven Approach for Co-Auditing Smart Contracts Using Gpt-4 Code Interpreter

Context: The surge in the adoption of smart contracts necessitates rigorous auditing to ensure their security and reliability. Manual auditing, although comprehensive, is time-consuming and heavily reliant on the auditor's expertise. With the rise of Large Language Models (LLMs), there is growing interest in leveraging them to assist auditors in the auditing process (co-auditing). However, the effectiveness of LLMs in smart contract co-auditing is contingent upon the design of the input prompts, especially in terms of context description and code ***: This paper introduces a novel context-driven prompting technique for smart contract co-auditing. The primary objective is to improve the effectiveness of LLMs in detecting vulnerabilities in smart contracts through enhanced prompt ***: Our approach employs three techniques for context scoping and augmentation, namely: Code Scoping, which involves chunking long code into self-contained code segments based on code interdependencies;Assessment Scoping, which enhances context description based on the target assessment goal to limit the search space;and Reporting Scoping, which forces a specific format for the generated ***: Through empirical evaluations on publicly available vulnerable contracts, our method demonstrated a detection rate of 96\% for vulnerable functions, outperforming the native prompting approach, which detected only 53\%. To assess the reliability of our prompting approach, manual analysis of the results was conducted by two expert auditors from Quantstamp, a world-leading smart contract auditing company.
