Metamodel matching plays a crucial role in defining transformation rules in model-driven engineering by identifying correspondences between different metamodels, forming the foundation for effective transformations. Current techniques face significant challenges due to syntactical and structural heterogeneity. To address this, matching techniques often employ semantic similarity to identify correspondences. Traditional semantic matchers, however, rely on ontology matching tools or lexical databases, which often struggle when metamodels use different terminologies or hierarchical structures. Inspired by the contextual understanding capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs), this paper explores the capability of GPT-4 potentials as a semantic matcher and alternative to existing methods for metamodel matching. However, metamodels can be large, which can overwhelm LLMs if provided in a single prompt, leading to reduced accuracy. Therefore, we propose prompting LLMs with fragments of the source and target metamodels, identifying correspondences through an iterative process. The fragments to be provided in the prompt are identified based on an initial mapping derived from their elements’ definitions. Through experiments with 10 metamodels, our results show that our LLMbased approach improves the accuracy of metamodel matching, achieving an average F-measure of $\approx 91 \%$, outperforming both the baseline and hybrid approaches, which have a maximum average F-measure of $\approx \mathbf{2 9 \%}$ and $\approx \mathbf{7 4 \%}$, respectively. Moreover, our approach surpasses single-prompt LLM-based matching, which has an average $\mathbf{F}$-measure of $\mathbf{8 0 \%}$, by approximately $\mathbf{1 1 \%}$.

Due to the increasing availability and popularity of virtual reality (VR) systems, 3D sketching applications have also boomed. Most of these applications focus on peripersonal sketching, e.g., within arm’s reach. Yet, sketching in larger scenes requires users to walk around the virtual environment while sketching or to change the sketch scale repeatedly. This paper presents Depth3DSketch, a 3D sketching technique that allows users to sketch objects up to 2.5 m away with a freehand sketching technique. Users can select the sketching depth with three interaction methods: using the joystick on a single controller, the intersection from two controllers, or the intersection from the controller ray and the user’s gaze. We compared these interaction methods in a user study. Results show that users preferred the joystick to select visual depth, but there was no difference in user accuracy or sketching time between the three methods. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

The timber-harvesting industry is lagging its peer industries, such as mining and agriculture, with respect to deployment of robotic, AI and autonomous technologies. In this paper, we tackle automation of a critical task that arises in transporting logs from the forest to the sawmill: the log loading operation. This work is motivated by the acute shortages of human operators and the need to improve the efficiencies of timber-harvesting processes. To this end, we demonstrate the full autonomy pipeline for the log loading operation with a fixed-base manipulator (a.k.a., the crane), starting with perception of logs around the machine, then grasp planning for where to grasp logs, through motion planning and control of the log loading maneuver. Our main contribution is in the full integration of the necessary elements to achieve a completely autonomous loading cycle, where the crane picks up and loads all logs within its reach on a trailer. Notable features of our implementation are a generalizable perception stack, a grasp planner to pick up multiple logs at a time and an extensive experimental campaign conducted outdoors, on a commercial log loader retrofitted for autonomy. Our results demonstrate an overall 87% success rate of the log loading operation, with primary failure cases due to log segmentation errors and deficiencies in the final height adjustment algorithm for grasping logs. We also present detailed timing results of the main parts of the autonomy pipeline, which support the feasibility of deployment in operational environment.

We have experimentally demonstrated a bidirectional radio-over-fiber (RoF) 5G new radio (NR) fronthaul transmission link based on an InAs/InP quantum dash mode-locked laser (QD-MLL), which provide low noise and highly coherent optical carriers. Two of the optical carriers are used for heterodyne based millimeter wave (MMW) RoF downlink transmission. The signal of the downlink is a 2-GBaud 16-QAM signal located at 28.951 GHz after heterodyne detection. The third optical carrier is used in uplink. The signal used in the uplink is a 2-GBaud 16-QAM signal located at 4 GHz. The result is verified by error-vector-magnitude (EVM) in real-time. The EVM of the downlink and uplink is up to 9.5% and 7.9% respectively in back-to-back setup. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a generic and software configurable overlay for the acquisition and visualization of data generated by embedded processing systems implemented on FPGA. The proposed architecture takes advantage of the coupling and interaction between the PL (programmable logic) and the PS (processing system) offered by the AMD PYNQ open-source framework on Zynq and several other platforms to provide the end-user with a high level abstraction programming interface. Results, cost, performance and design limitations of the overlay are discussed around its use for HIL simulation of high switching frequency power electronic circuits. The paper demonstrates that the overlay footprint is sufficiently small to be used on low-cost FPGA platforms, and that it provides a throughput of hundreds of millions of samples per second over up to eight 16-bit independent channels, while offering the capacity to log up to 128 MB of contiguous frames of data. © 2023 IEEE.

Model-Based System engineering (MBSE) employs models and formal languages to support development of complex (systems-of-) systems. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) sees MBSE as a key approach to managing the complexity of system development. However, balancing agility and rigor in MBSE has been reported as a challenging task not yet addressed by modeling tools and frameworks. This is because existing MBSE approaches may enable agility but compromise rigor, or enhance rigor but impede agility. We discuss the challenges of balancing agility and rigor in MBSE across seven systems engineering architectural functions defined by the JPL Integrated Model-Centric engineering (IMCE) initiative. We demonstrate how openCAESAR, an open-source MBSE methodology and framework created at JPL, can strike a balance between agility and rigor through a case study of the Kepler16b project and discussion of lessons learned from past projects.

Performance Smells in ML and Non-ML Python Projects: A Comparative Study

Python is widely adopted across various domains, especially in Machine Learning (ML) and traditional software projects. Despite its versatility, Python is susceptible to performance smells, i.e., suboptimal coding practices that can reduce application efficiency. This study provides a comparative analysis of performance smells between ML and non-ML projects, aiming to assess the occurrence of these inefficiencies while exploring their distribution across stages in the ML pipeline. For that, we conducted an empirical study analyzing 300 Python-based GitHub projects, distributed across ML and non-ML projects, categorizing performance smells based on the RIdiom tool. Our results indicate that ML projects are more susceptible to performance smells likely due to the computational and data-intensive nature of ML workflows. We also observed that performance smells in the ML pipeline predominantly affect the Data Processing stage. However, their presence in the Model Deployment stage indicates that such smells are not limited to the early stages of the pipeline. Our findings offer actionable insights for developers, emphasizing the importance of targeted optimizations for smells prevalent in ML projects. Furthermore, our study underscores the need to tailor performance optimization strategies to the unique characteristics of ML projects, with particular attention to the pipeline stages most affected by performance smells. The technical student society PolyOrbite from the university of polytechnique montreal in Québec, Canada is designing a nanosatellite mission with a homemade 3U CubeSat that will observe the Earth's surface with the help of infrared and visible spectrum cameras. These payloads will give information on aerosols and various surface temperature hotspots on earth. The CubeSat will be able to monitor cities, agricultural lands, wildfires, glaciers and more. The main goal would be to monitor Canadian grounds and work with scientists and students in various fields to help push knowledge about our planet. Besides having a scientific purpose, the CubeSat will also be used for technological demonstration. Two innovative technologies for space missions will be tested: Artificial intelligence with on earth machine learning and model sampling, and compressed sensing. To achieve these goals, the project objectives split into two categories: scientific and engineering. The scientific part will consist in making the link between scientists and engineers. The team will need to know the studied targeted area and what information to get from it. The received data will have to be analysed, making it important to design an easy-to-use platform that will encompass needed information. The engineering part consists of integrating payloads and new technologies into the CubeSat, the main challenges being: • Payload choice: Since budget and time are limited, choosing a cost-effective payload system will be mandatory. Commercial-use cameras are the number one options since they are less expensive than space grade equipment. • Payload calibration: Having a thermal payload, an adequate temperature calibration need to be done to minimize biases on temperature measurement and increase the scientific value of the data. We propose a novel unsupervised approach based on a two-stage object-centric adversarial framework that only needs object regions for detecting frame-level local anomalies in videos. The first stage consists in learning the correspondence between the current appearance and past gradient images of objects in scenes deemed normal, allowing us to either generate the past gradient from current appearance or the reverse. The second stage extracts the partial reconstruction errors between real and generated images (appearance and past gradient) with normal object behaviour, and trains a discriminator in an adversarial fashion. In inference mode, we employ the trained image generators with the adversarially learned binary classifier for outputting region-level anomaly detection scores. We tested our method on four public benchmarks, UMN, UCSD, Avenue and ShanghaiTech and our proposed object-centric adversarial approach yields competitive or even superior results compared to state-of-the-art methods. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This work proposes and demonstrates a single-ended reconfigurable receiver that can realize wireless power harvesting and harmonic backscattering functions relying on one diode. A normally closed switch ADG842 implements reconfigurable operation between wireless power harvesting and harmonic backscattering modes. This self-adaptative operation starts with the SMS3922 diode converting RF input power into dc, driving and turning off the switch once its logic control voltage threshold is reached. Then, the load of power harvesting is isolated, and the diode starts to generate significantly more second harmonic signals for backscattering communication purposes. Next, the receiver returns to power harvesting operation as the driven voltage drops, preparing for the next-round operation. Both simulation and experiment confirm the reconfigurable operation of this proposed receiver, which can find great potential in simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) applications at extremely low cost.
