The article presents an innovative approach to the rehabilitation process for patients with joint endoprosthetics, focusing on the integration of a specialized software module based on computer vision technologies and the ontological approach. Developed for the Federal Centre for Traumatology, Orthopaedics, and Endoprosthesis in Smolensk, Russia, this system is designed to improve the quality of life for patients by offering personalized rehabilitation plans. The core of the study lies in the application of ontological models and meta-associative graphs for synthesizing individual rehabilitation plans, which streamline the recovery process and reduce the workload on healthcare professionals. This method allows for the processing of large amounts of information, providing detailed conclusions and recommendations for functional correction of the musculoskeletal system. The software utilizes computer vision to analyze patient movement and develop tailored rehabilitation strategies, overcoming the limitations of traditional diagnostic tools like MRI, which may not be suitable for all patients. By incorporating artificial intelligence and augmented reality, the system enhances the accuracy of patient assessments and the effectiveness of rehabilitation plans. Furthermore, the article discusses the application of this technology in the educational process at the Belarusian-Russian University, where students are introduced to cutting-edge software tools that assist in creating personalized rehabilitation plans. This educational integration not only enriches the students’ learning experience but also fosters innovation in the development of new applications for computer vision in medical rehabilitation. The ontological approach, combined with modern technology, represents a significant advancement in the management of musculoskeletal system diseases, offering a more efficient, personalized approach to rehabilitation and recovery.

This paper presents the components of a newly developed Malaysian SMEs - software Process Improvement model (MSME-SPI) that can assess SMEs software development industry in managing and improving their software processes capability. The MSME-SPI is developed in response to practitioner needs that were highlighted in an empirical study with the Malaysian SME software development industry. After the model development, there is a need for independent feedback to show that the model meets its objectives. Consequently, the validation phase is performed by involving a group of software process improvement experts in examining the MSME-SPI model components. Besides, the effectiveness of the MSME-SPI model is validated using an expert panel. Three criteria were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the model namely: usefulness, verifiability, and structure. The results show the model effective to be used by SMEs with minor modifications. The validation phase contributes towards a better understanding and use of the MSME-SPI model by the practitioners in the field. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

HIT-UAV: A high-altitude infrared thermal dataset for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-based object detection

We present the HIT-UAV dataset, a high-altitude infrared thermal dataset for object detection applications on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The dataset comprises 2, 898 infrared thermal images extracted from 43, 470 frames in hundreds of videos captured by UAVs in various scenarios including schools, parking lots, roads, and playgrounds. Moreover, the HIT-UAV provides essential flight data for each image, such as flight altitude, camera perspective, date, and daylight intensity. For each image, we have manually annotated object instances with bounding boxes of two types (oriented and standard) to tackle the challenge of significant overlap of object instances in aerial images. To the best of our knowledge, the HIT-UAV is the first publicly available high-altitude UAV-based infrared thermal dataset for detecting persons and vehicles. We have trained and evaluated well-established object detection algorithms on the HIT-UAV. Our results demonstrate that the detection algorithms perform exceptionally well on the HIT-UAV compared to visual light datasets since infrared thermal images do not contain significant irrelevant information about objects. Lung cancer has the highest death rate of any other cancer in the world. Detecting lung cancer early can increase a patient’s survival rate. The corresponding work presents the method for improving the computer-aided detection (CAD) of nodules present in the lung area in computed tomography (CT) images. The main aim was to get an overview of the latest tools and technologies used: acquisition, storage, segmentation, classification, processing, and analysis of biomedical data. After the analysis, a model is proposed consisting of three main steps. In the first step, threshold values and component labeling of 3D components were used to segment the lung volume. In the second step, candidate nodules are identified and segmented with an optimal threshold value and rule-based trimming. It also selects 2D and 3D features from the candidate segmented node. In the final step, the selected features are used to train the SVM and classify the nodes and classify the non-nodes. To assess the performance of the proposed framework, experiments were performed on the LIDC data set. As a result, it was observed that the number of false positives in the nodule candidate was reduced to 4 FP per scan with a sensitivity of 95%.

Rock tunnel engineering (RTE) plays a crucial role in modern infrastructure development. The development of artificial intelligence (AI) is able to drive transformative advances in RTE. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the AI application in RTE. Through a comprehensive examination of existing literature, we explore how AI technologies have revolutionised various aspects of RTE, including construction methodology, rock parameter estimation, hazard disaster management during construction, and tunnel operation. In addition, we provide an in-depth study of the synergies between various AI algorithms and related open datasets. This work also outlines promising future research directions for the AI application in RTE, aiming to inspire further advancements in this emerging field. In conclusion, this review underscores the positive influence of AI on RTE, emphasising its capacity to elevate efficiency, accuracy, and safety standards throughout various phases of tunnel projects. The convergence of AI with RTE holds immense promise for advancing the field and ensuring the success and sustainability of future tunnel infrastructure endeavours. © 2025 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

A Generalized Binary Tree Mechanism for Differentially Private Approximation of All-Pair Distances

We study the problem of approximating all-pair distances in a weighted undirected graph with differential privacy, introduced by Sealfon [Sea16]. Given a publicly known undirected graph, we treat the weights of edges as sensitive information, and two graphs are neighbors if their edge weights differ in one edge by at most one. We obtain efficient algorithms with significantly improved bounds on a broad class of graphs which we refer to as recursively separable. In particular, for any n-vertex Kh-minor-free graph, our algorithm achieve an additive error of Õ(h(nW)1/3), where W represents the maximum edge weight;For grid graphs, the same algorithmic scheme achieve additive error of Õ(n1/4√W). Our approach can be seen as a generalization of the celebrated binary tree mechanism for range queries, as releasing range queries is equivalent to computing all-pair distances on a path graph. In essence, our approach is based on generalizing the binary tree mechanism to graphs that are recursively separable. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Ontology-Driven software Development has emerged as a significant mechanism in creating domain-specific languages (DSLs), allowing for expressing domain concepts effectively. Once an ontology is built, it is a simple process to generate the language's metamodel and establish relationships among related concepts. However, the creation of the ontology is often a time-consuming and laborious task requiring familiarity with the domain being modeled as well as a basic understanding of ontology engineering. This paper discusses the use of natural language scenarios to create a domain ontology, which can be applied towards generating a metamodel for a DSL. A case study for aviation scenarios is presented by using increasing numbers of scenarios and comparing the models at different stages to observe the evolution of the ontology. The scenario-driven ontology developed is compared to an existing aviation ontology to understand its value.

Robust and Precise Facial Landmark Detection by Self-Calibrated Pose Attention Network

Current fully-supervised facial landmark detection methods have progressed rapidly and achieved remarkable performance. However, they still suffer when coping with faces under large poses and heavy occlusions for inaccurate facial shape constraints and insufficient labeled training samples. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised framework, i.e., a Self-Calibrated Pose Attention Network (SCPAN) to achieve more robust and precise facial landmark detection in challenging scenarios. To be specific, a Boundary-Aware Landmark Intensity (BALI) field is proposed to model more effective facial shape constraints by fusing boundary and landmark intensity field information. Moreover, a Self-Calibrated Pose Attention (SCPA) model is designed to provide a self-learned objective function that enforces intermediate supervision without label information by introducing a self-calibrated mechanism and a pose attention mask. We show that by integrating the BALI fields and SCPA model into a novel self-calibrated pose attention network, more facial prior knowledge can be learned and the detection accuracy and robustness of our method for faces with large poses and heavy occlusions have been improved. The experimental results obtained for challenging benchmark datasets demonstrate that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods in the literature. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. BACKGROUND:Skin cancer is one of the highly occurring diseases in human life. Early detection and treatment are the prime and necessary points to reduce the malignancy of infections. Deep learning techniques are supplementary tools to assist clinical experts in detecting and localizing skin lesions. Vision transformers (ViT) based on image segmentation classification using multiple classes provide fairly accurate detection and are gaining more popularity due to legitimate multiclass prediction capabilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS:In this research, we propose a new ViT Gradient-Weighted Class Activation Mapping (GradCAM) based architecture named ViT-GradCAM for detecting and classifying skin lesions by spreading ratio on the lesion's surface area. The proposed system is trained and validated using a HAM 10000 dataset by studying seven skin lesions. The database comprises 10 015 dermatoscopic images of varied sizes. The data preprocessing and data augmentation techniques are applied to overcome the class imbalance issues and improve the model's performance. RESULT:The proposed algorithm is based on ViT models that classify the dermatoscopic images into seven classes with an accuracy of 97.28%, precision of 98.51, recall of 95.2%, and an F1 score of 94.6, respectively. The proposed ViT-GradCAM obtains better and more accurate detection and classification than other state-of-the-art deep learning-based skin lesion detection models. The architecture of ViT-GradCAM is extensively visualized to highlight the actual pixels in essential regions associated with skin-specific pathologies. CONCLUSION:This research proposes an alternate solution to overcome the challenges of detecting and classifying skin lesions using ViTs and GradCAM, which play a significant role in detecting and classifying skin lesions accurately rather than relying solely on deep learning models.

XAI refers to the techniques and methods for building AI applications which assist end users to interpret output and predictions of AI models. Black box AI applications in high-stakes decision-making situations, such as medical domain have increased the demand for transparency and explainability since wrong predictions may have severe consequences. Model explainability and interpretability are vital successful deployment of AI models in healthcare practices. AI applications' underlying reasoning needs to be transparent to clinicians in order to gain their trust. This paper presents a systematic review of XAI aspects and challenges in the healthcare domain. The primary goals of this study are to review various XAI methods, their challenges, and related machine learning models in healthcare. The methods are discussed under six categories: Features-oriented methods, global methods, concept models, surrogate models, local pixel-based methods, and human-centric methods. Most importantly, the paper explores XAI role in healthcare problems to clarify its necessity in safety-critical applications. The paper intends to establish a comprehensive understanding of XAI-related applications in the healthcare field by reviewing the related experimental results. To facilitate future research for filling research gaps, the importance of XAI models from different viewpoints and their limitations are investigated. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
