With the development of Internet computing techniques, continuous data streams from remote sites are commonly used in scientific and commercial applications. Correspondingly, there is increasing demand of assuring the integrity and authenticity of received data streams. Existing strategies of assuring data integrity and authenticity mainly use message authentication codes (MAC) generated on data blocks and transfer the MAC to the receiver for authentication through either out of band communication or in band communication. Transferring the MAC via out of band communication inevitably introduces communication overhead and additional complexity to synchronize the out of band communication with the data communication. Transferring the MAC via in band channel can be achieved by either appending the MAC to the original data or embedding the MAC into the original data, which would either incur communication overhead or change the original data. It would be desirable to be able to authenticate the stream data without any communication overhead and changing the original data at the same time. To deal with data packet or block loss, many of existing stream data authentication schemes rely on hash chaining, the current usage of which results in uncertainty in authenticating the subsequent data blocks once the first data packet or block loss is detected. In this paper, we propose a novel application layer authentication strategy called DaTA. This authentication scheme requires no change to the original data and causes no additional communication overhead. In addition, it can continue authenticating the rest of data stream even if some data loss has been detected. Our analysis shows that our authentication scheme is robust against packet loss and network jitter. We have implemented a prototype system to evaluate its performance. Our empirical results show that our proposed scheme is efficient and practical under various network conditions

This paper proposes an adaptive routing protocol called ARFA for an integrated cellular and ad hoc heterogeneous network with flexible access (iCAR-FA). An iCAR-FA system offers a flexible traffic diversion mechanism that allows a mobile host to utilize the bandwidth in another cell, as such easing the congestion problem and increasing the throughput in a cellular network. Based on the presentation of the iCAR-FA physical characteristics, the paper details the design issues and operation of ARFA. Detailed numerical analysis on routing overhead, which is along with some general evaluations, has indicated the effectiveness and efficiency of the ARFA protocol

According to the Life Safety Code reg , the geometry of a building, the location of exits, and the number of exits dictate the means of egress for all people occupying a building. In this paper we show how evolutionary computations in the form of Genetic Algorithms and Estimation of Distribution Algorithms are used to evolve the placement of exits in order to optimize overall evacuation time. In particular, a generational GA, a steady-state GA, and an elitist EDA are used to evolve the placement of exits for two practical design problems. The algorithms are evaluated in terms of success rate, number of function evaluations, and best fitness. For both problems, the steady-state GA outperformed the other algorithms in all evaluation categories.

software reliability techniques are aimed at reducing or eliminating failures in software systems. Reliability in software systems has traditionally been measured during or after system implementation. However, software engineering methodology lays stress on doing the "correct things" early on in the software development lifecycle in order to curb development and maintenance costs. In this paper, we argue that reliability of a software system should be assessed throughout the system's life span, starting with the software architecture level. Our research goal is to estimate the reliability of software systems in early design stages, which we believe involves the ability to reason about numerous uncertainties that exist in this stage, including uncertainty due to lack of execution artifacts. Our proposed approach is to develop techniques that will couple software architectural models with a suite of stochastic reliability estimation models and allow us to reason about these uncertainties. In this paper, we present our recent results using our technique for reliability estimation of software components at the level of software architecture. Another important part of this paper is the discussion of our ongoing research efforts and open research problems in this area

The growing computational and storage needs of several scientific applications mandate the deployment of extreme-scale parallel machines, such as IBM's BlueGene/L which can accommodate as many as 128 K processors. One of the challenges when designing and deploying these systems in a production setting is the need to take failure occurrences, whether it be in the hardware or in the software, into account. Earlier work has shown that conventional runtime fault-tolerant techniques such as periodic checkpointing are not effective to the emerging systems. Instead, the ability to predict failure occurrences can help develop more effective checkpointing strategies. Failure prediction has long been regarded as a challenging research problem, mainly due to the lack of realistic failure data from actual production systems. In this study, we have collected RAS event logs from BlueGene/L over a period of more than 100 days. We have investigated the characteristics of fatal failure events, as well as the correlation between fatal events and non-fatal events. Based on the observations, we have developed three simple yet effective failure prediction methods, which can predict around 80% of the memory and network failures, and 47% of the application I/O failures

This is commonly thought that CASE tools reduce programming efforts and increase development productivity. However, no paper has provide quantitative data supporting the matter. This paper discusses productivity improvement through the use of an integrated CASE tool system named EAGLE (Effective Approach to Achieving High Level software Productivity), as shown by various data collected in Hitachi from the 1980s to the 2000s. We have evaluated productivity by using three metrics, 1) program generation rate using reusable program skeletons and components, 2) fault density at two test phase, and 3) learning curve for the education of inexperienced programmers. We propose an improved iris recognition method for person identification using an iris segmentation approach based on chain code and zigzag collarette area with support vector machine (SVM). The zigzag collarette area is selected as a personal identification pattern which captures only the most important areas of iris complex pattern and better recognition accuracy is achieved. The idea to use the zigzag collarette area is that it is insensitive to the pupil dilation and usually not affected by eyelids or eyelashes. The deterministic feature sequence is extracted from iris images using Gabor wavelet technique and used to train SVM as iris classifiers. The traditional SVM is modified as asymmetrical SVM to treat False Accept and False Reject differently to satisfy several security requirements. The parameters of SVM are tuned to improve overall system performance. Our experimental results also indicate that the performance of SVM as a classifier is far better than the performance of backpropagation neural network (BPNN), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), Hamming and Mahalanobis distance. The proposed innovative technique is computationally effective as well as reliable in term of recognition rate of 99.56%.

Taking advantage of the Grid workflow, scientists and engineers are building more and more complex decision support applications to process large data sets, and coordinate scheduling distributed decision resources. Such decision resource scheduling processes require means for composing and executing complex workflows. Therefore, many efforts have been made towards the development of workflow scheduling systems for decision resource coordinate scheduling on Grid environment. In this paper, we investigates the emerging need for Grid workflow to aid decision support on the Grid and proposes a Grid workflow for decision resource scheduling that is a Petri net-based graph model and incorporates a reasoning system designed to perform such a task. It effectively hides the heterogeneity of decision resources with good intelligence, scalability and adaptability.

Nowadays there are vocabularies or languages able to describe concepts and data structures related to road traffic. Nevertheless, this description provides only a syntactic approach and it forgot the semantic knowledge. There not exist vocabularies or ontologies with semantic value that add significance to the vocabulary concepts and their relations. The objective to be reached of this paper is to present the research developed to build a representation scheme of a particular domain: the road traffic, with a well defined semantics. The inclusion of this semantic allows to obtain a formalized knowledge model. This model enables the development of an integrated architecture of traffic information from semantic Web services. The ontologies created in this work are used to describe and add semantic value to the current parameters of the traffic services
