The rapid expansion and advancement of deepfake technology, which is specifically designed to create incredibly lifelike facial imagery and video content, has ignited a remarkable level of interest and curiosity across a multitude of fields, including but not limited to the realms of the entertainment industry, forensic analysis, cybersecurity and the innovative creation of digital characters. By harnessing the latest breakthroughs in deep learning methodologies, especially through the implementation of techniques such as Generative Adversarial Networks, Variational Autoencoders, Few-Shot Learning Strategies, and Transformer Neural Networks, the outcomes achieved in the generation of deepfakes have been nothing short of astounding and transformative. Furthermore, the recent advancements in diffusion models have served to invigorate and catalyze ongoing research efforts in this fascinating domain. At the same time, the ongoing evolution of detection technologies is being developed to counteract the potential for misuse associated with deepfakes, effectively addressing critical concerns that range from political manipulation to the dissemination of fake news and the ever-growing issue of cyberbullying. This comprehensive review paper meticulously investigates the most recent developments in both deepfake generation and detection, including around 400 publications, providing an in-depth analysis of the cutting-edge innovations that are shaping this rapidly evolving landscape. Starting with a thorough examination of systematic literature review methodologies, we embark on a journey that delves into the complex technical intricacies inherent in the various techniques used for deepfake generation, comprehensively addressing the challenges faced, potential solutions available, and the nuanced details surrounding manipulation formulations. Continuous monitoring of patients involves collecting and analyzing sensory data from a multitude of sources. To overcome communication overhead, ensure data privacy and security, reduce data loss, and maintain efficient resource usage the processing and analytics are moved close to where the data is located (e.g., the Edge). Data quality (DQ) can be degraded because of imprecise or malfunctioning sensors, dynamic changes in the environment, transmission failures, or delays. Therefore, can mislead clinical judgments and cause incorrect actions, if not managed properly. In this paper, inspired by Federated Learning (FL), we propose a novel approach using Federated Data Quality (FDQ) Profiling to assess DQ at the edge considering a global quality profile aggregated based on local profiles. We conducted experiments to evaluate the effect of FDQ profiling on DQ improvement considering the assessment of outlier detection and unbalanced data. The results demonstrated that the improved DQ has a positive impact on the accuracy of four conventional machine learning models.

The majority of real-time object recognition systems operate on two-dimensional images, degrading the influence of the involved objects' third-dimensional (i.e., depth) information. The depth information of a captured scene provides a thorough understanding of an object in full-dimensional space. During the last decade, several region proposal techniques have been integrated into object detection. scenes’ objects are then localized and classified but only in a two-dimensional space. Such techniques exist under the umbrella of two-dimensional object detection models such as YOLO and SSD. However, these techniques have the issue of being uncertain that an object's boundaries are properly specified into the particular scene. This paper proposes a unique region proposal and object detection strategy based on retrieving depth information for localization and segmentation of the scenes’ objects in real-time manner. The obtained results on different datasets show superior accuracy in comparison to the commonly implemented techniques with regards to not only detection but also a pixel-by-pixel accurate localization of objects. © 2022, The Authors. Hyperledger Fabric stands as a leading framework for permissioned block-chain systems, ensuring data security and audit-ability for enterprise applications. As applications on this platform grow, understanding its complex configuration concerning various block-chain parameters becomes vital. These configurations significantly affect the system’s performance and cost. In this research, we introduce a Stochastic Petri Net (SPN) model to analyze Hyper-ledger Fabric’s performance, considering variations in block-chain parameters, computational resources, and transaction rates. We provide case studies to validate the utility of our model, aiding block-chain administrators in determining optimal configurations for their applications. A key observation from our model highlights the block size’s role in system response time. We noted an increased mean response time, between 1 to 25 seconds, due to variations in transaction arrival rates.

The proliferation of digital health technologies has led to an abundance of personal health data. However, querying and retrieving specific health-related information from disparate sources can be challenging and inconvenient, particularly for older individuals unfamiliar with technology. While ChatGPT offers a conversational interface, it lacks domain-specific knowledge, including personalized health information. To address this limitation, we present a novel approach that combines a knowledge graph and GPT to enable personalized health queries. Our solution utilizes a personal knowledge graph as a comprehensive knowledge source and fine-tunes GPT to provide accurate responses. We have implemented a voice assistant mobile app incorporating this knowledge graph-assisted GPT model and conducted initial feasibility testing.

The transition to a renewable energy (RE) based future necessitates transformative changes in the industrial sector's energy infrastructure. As industries strive to maintain economic viability while achieving decarbonization goals, there is a pressing need for innovative strategies that integrate renewable energy sources, enhance energy efficiency, and optimize energy procurement. This paper presents a comprehensive approach that leverages a combination of simulation and optimization methods to address the challenges of designing and operating complex future industrial energy systems. A nested optimization approach is proposed, which combines Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) for operational optimization with black-box optimization techniques. The approach enables exploration of solutions for optimal infrastructure investment as well as operational strategies, allowing companies to benchmark a wide range of infrastructure and contractual options. This provides these companies with the means to determine long-term, cost-effective pathways that minimize CO2 emissions, avoid malinvestments, and ensure the sustainable operation of energy systems. A case study involving a German waste processing company illustrates the practical application of our approach, highlighting how strategic decisions in asset dimensioning, energy flexibility utilization, and renewable integration can significantly impact both costs and emissions.

The advent of 5G and beyond networks is envisioned to support lower latency, higher data rates, and wider connectivity than previous cellular network generations. However, given the denser deployment of base stations (BSs) to accommodate such improvements, this results inevitably in a significant and unsustainable increase in the network’s energy consumption. Sleep Control (SC), which allows switching off some BS hardware components during light-traffic time, is considered a viable solution for greener and more energy-efficient Radio Access Networks (RAN). However, the optimization of SC is a highly challenging large-scale network combinatorial problem that depends on dynamic wireless channel conditions and varying traffic demands with stringent Quality-of-Service (QoS) requirements. Driven by the benefits and efficiency of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), which has been successfully applied to multiple wireless network optimization problems, this paper investigates DRL approaches addressing sleep control in 5G and beyond RAN. To this end, we propose a taxonomy to classify the related literature. Then, we provide an overview of the different components of the Markov Decision Process (MDP) modeling the sequential decision-making of sleep control and the applied DRL algorithms. Finally, we highlight the main challenges in existing works and suggest novel strategies to address them.

The inspection of products and assessment of quality is connected with high costs and time effort in many industrial domains. This also applies to the forestry industry. Utilizing state-of-the-art deep learning models allows automizing the analysis of wooden piles in a vision-based manner. In this work, a parallel two-step approach is presented for the segmentation and multi-facet classification of individual logs, according to the wood type and quality. The present approach is based on a preliminary log localization step and like this allows determining the quality, volume and also the value of individual logs, respectively the whole wooden pile. Using a YOLOv4 model for wood species classification for douglas firs, pines and larches results in an accuracy of 74.53%, while a quality classification model for spruce logs reaches 86.58%. In addition to that, the trained U-NET segmentation model reaches an accuracy of 93%. In the future, the underlying data set and models will be further improved and integrated to a mobile application for the on site analysis of wooden piles by foresters. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper reviews the use of Minikube in multi-node mode to work with the ETSI MEC Sandbox as a lightweight multi-access edge computing platform simulator (LWMECPS). The work included a comparative analysis of MEC platforms in terms of functionality, cost of deployment, and complexity of adoption. An experiment was also conducted to test LWMECPS as a MEC platform using a Python3 test application. The experiment confirmed the feasibility of using LWMECPS as a MEC platform by deploying a Kubernetes deployment based on the number of users on the simulated 4g-macro network service zones from the ETSI MEC Sandbox. Particular attention was paid to the analysis of existing scientific literature on the use of multi-access edge computing platforms in various use cases.

Countering Eavesdroppers with Meta-learning-based Cooperative Ambient Backscatter Communications

This article introduces a novel lightweight framework using ambient backscattering communications to counter eavesdroppers. In particular, our framework divides an original message into two parts. The first part, i.e., the active-transmit message, is transmitted by the transmitter using conventional RF signals. Simultaneously, the second part, i.e., the backscatter message, is transmitted by an ambient backscatter tag that backscatters upon the active signals emitted by the transmitter. Notably, the backscatter tag does not generate its own signal, making it difficult for an eavesdropper to detect the backscattered signals unless they have prior knowledge of the system. Here, we assume that without decoding/knowing the backscatter message, the eavesdropper is unable to decode the original message. Even in scenarios where the eavesdropper can capture both messages, reconstructing the original message is a complex task without understanding the intricacies of the message-splitting mechanism. A challenge in our proposed framework is to effectively decode the backscattered signals at the receiver, often accomplished using the maximum likelihood (MLK) approach. However, such a method may require a complex mathematical model together with perfect channel state information (CSI). To address this issue, we develop a novel deep meta-learning-based signal detector that can not only effectively decode the weak backscattered signals without requiring perfect CSI but also quickly adapt to a new wireless environment with very little knowledge. Simulation results show that our proposed learning approach, without requiring perfect CSI and complex mathematical model, can achieve a bit error ratio close to that of the MLK-based approach. They also clearly show the efficiency of the proposed approach in dealing with eavesdropping attacks and the lack of training data for deep learning models in practical scenarios.
