The utilization of Data-Driven Machine Learning (DDML) models in the healthcare sector poses unique challenges due to the crucial nature of clinical decision-making and its impact on patient outcomes. A primary concern in this domain is the data quality that forms the basis for these models, which is essential for their effectiveness. While numerous studies are dedicated to leveraging Machine Learning (ML) to enhance patient care, a substantial gap exists in understanding and evaluating the quality of training data before training ML models. This issue is exacerbated by the lack of well-defined standards to ensure that data characteristics align with the specific goals of ML in healthcare. To address this, our study introduces a conceptual three-dimensional framework focusing on data accuracy, completeness, and consistency aimed at assessing and improving the quality of training data. This framework is designed to enhance the performance, predictability, and interpretability of healthcare-specific ML models and reduce biases, thus bridging current research gaps and laying the groundwork for future developments in ML-driven healthcare systems. This paper presents the initial step for our proposed Data Quality Framework (DQF), which addresses the three dimensions mentioned above. It discusses its potential implications and applications in healthcare data, and its main goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of the proposed DQF, illustrating its significance in advancing healthcare data quality and ultimately improving patient outcomes. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

In the context of Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS), the role of vehicle detection and classification is indispensable for streamlining transportation management, refining traffic control, and conducting in-depth accident analyses. However, the intricate task of accurately detecting multi-oriented vehicles in diverse scenarios remains a challenge, even with the advancements in ITS. Factors such as vehicle morphology, design, road conditions, structural details, and climatic variables provide a significant part in the detection. To address this, our study introduces an advanced YOLOv8n model, specifically the YOLOv8n-CGW, which is built upon pre-trained deep learning frameworks. This model is meticulously tailored to enhance the detection capabilities for multi-oriented vehicles. Comprehensive evaluations on esteemed datasets like MtV, MERGED, Custom dataset, DAWN, WEDGE, and UA-DETRAC underscore the superiority of our approach over existing models. Notably, our YOLOv8n-CGW model achieves a remarkable mAP of 83.3% and boasts a swift inference time of 0.0019s, setting a new benchmark in the domain. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Recent advancements in Smart Assistants (SAs) as well as home automation have captured the attention of both researchers and consumers. Virtual Assistants (VAs) that are speech-enabled are commonly referred to as smart speakers. They offer a wide range of network-based services. In some cases, they seamlessly link to smart environments, introducing innovative and efficient user interfaces. Nevertheless, these devices present their own set of challenges and limitations. The distinctive features of this technology, particularly its hand-free operation handled by voice and implementation of voice-user interface create a unique landscape. Existing technology adoption models, however, fall short in offering a comprehensive explanation for the adoption of this innovative technology. To gain deeper insights into the motivation behind approving and using in-home voice assistants, this work shifts its focus towards examining voice interactions. Utilization of speech recognition for converting speech into text enables constructing an attractive personalized assistant. This development facilitates seamless tasks such as sending emails without manual typing, conducting Google searches without opening the browser, and accomplishing various daily activities including playing music or launching a preferred IDE, all with a single voice command. To assess its performance, the system is seamlessly integrated with home automation (open-source) environment and operated continuously for some days. Indoor Navigation System (INS) supports seamless movement of objects within confined spaces in smart environments. In this paper, a novel INS that relies on ESP32-based Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) measurements for precise estimation of distance using K-Nearest Neighbour (K-NN) algorithm is proposed. The system architecture includes three ESP32 nodes functioning as clients, and ESP8266 combined with ESP32 acting as a server. To overcome the limitations of Global Positioning System (GPS) within an indoor environment, Machine Learning (ML)-based prediction models are employed to estimate distance between nodes and predict user locations along with the distance between source and destination. This approach not only addresses the challenges posed by GPS in indoor settings, but also shows the potential of ESP32 devices and predictive algorithms for enhancing navigation accuracy and reliability. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Segmentation of brain tumors aids in diagnosing the disease early, planning treatment, and monitoring its progression in medical image analysis. Automation is necessary to eliminate the time and variability associated with traditional segmentation methods. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and U-Net architectures have demonstrated their efficiency and effectiveness in segmenting brain tumors from MRI images using deep learning techniques. The paper presents an improved U-Net-based segmentation algorithm that integrates nested skip paths to improve encoder-decoder feature fusion. The performance of segmentation was optimized by utilizing a variety of activation functions and loss functions, including Dice Loss and Intersection over Union (IoU). A high level of accuracy was demonstrated in the proposed model when it was evaluated using the LGG Segmentation Dataset. The proposed approach for segmenting medical images has been shown to be both robust and efficient in a comparative analysis. © 2025 The Authors

The advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) has introduced trans- formative solutions in plant care. This review investigates the integration of deep learning and image recognition technologies for identifying and managing plant diseases. The proposed project focuses on developing a user-centric web application designed to detect plant diseases automatically, provide treatment recommendations, suggest nearby nurseries for obtaining necessary supplies, and offer chatbot assistance for user inquiries. Leveraging advanced image recognition techniques, this system aims to make plant care more efficient and accessible. The integration of Google Maps enhances navigation to local nurseries, further simplifying access to resources and promoting better plant care practices. This study outlines current methodologies, explores challenges and opportunities, and proposes a structured framework for creating an intelligent plant care platform to meet the evolving demands of farmers and horticulture professionals. © 2025 IEEE.

EFS-XGBoost: A robust framework for precision classification of COVID-19 cases

The emergence of the novel COVID-19 virus has had a profound impact on global healthcare systems and economies, underscoring the imperative need for the development of precise and expeditious diagnostic tools. Machine learning techniques have emerged as a promising avenue for augmenting the capabilities of medical professionals in disease diagnosis and classification. In this research, the EFS-XGBoost classifier model, a robust approach for the classification of patients afflicted with COVID-19 is proposed. The key innovation in the proposed model lies in the Ensemble-based Feature Selection (EFS) strategy, which enables the judicious selection of relevant features from the expansive COVID-19 dataset. Subsequently, the power of the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) classifier to make precise distinctions among COVID-19-infected patients is *** EFS methodology amalgamates five distinctive feature selection techniques, encompassing correlation-based, chi-squared, information gain, symmetric uncertainty-based, and gain ratio approaches. To evaluate the effectiveness of the model, comprehensive experiments were conducted using a COVID-19 dataset procured from Kaggle, and the implementation was executed using Python programming. The performance of the proposed EFS-XGBoost model was gauged by employing well-established metrics that measure classification accuracy, including accuracy, precision, recall, and the F1-Score. Furthermore, an in-depth comparative analysis was conducted by considering the performance of the XGBoost classifier under various scenarios: employing all features within the dataset without any feature selection technique, and utilizing each feature selection technique in isolation. The meticulous evaluation reveals that the proposed EFS-XGBoost model excels in performance, achieving an astounding accuracy rate of 99.8%, surpassing the efficacy of other prevailing feature selection techniques. High-accuracy face recognition with the MRYOLO-SCO algorithm: combining residual networks and YOLOv2 for improved precision

Face recognition in real-world scenarios presents significant challenges due to variations in lighting conditions, occlusions, pose changes, and low-resolution images. To address these challenges, this study proposes a Modified Residual YOLO Network-based Single Candidate Optimization algorithm, which integrates a Modified Residual Network with YOLOv2 to improve recognition accuracy while maintaining computational efficiency. Unlike conventional YOLO models, the proposed framework introduces bipolar feature extraction, enabling the network to capture both high-level global features and low-level local details, thus improving robustness against occlusions and illumination variations. Atailored cost function is introduced to minimize bounding box localization errors and classification inaccuracies, incorporating weighted penalties to enhance model precision. Additionally, a Single Candidate Optimization algorithm is employed to fine-tune hyperparameters, ensuring faster convergence and lower computational complexity. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated using the benchmark datasets and the simulation results that the proposed framework outperforms existing YOLO-based models, achieving an accuracy of 98.8%, a recall of 98.0%, and an F1-score of 98.1%while maintainingalower computational cost than YOLOv3, YOLOv4, and YOLOv5. The experimental results also indicate that the tailored cost function reduces misclassification errors by 6.1% and accelerates convergence by 20%, making the proposed framework highly suitable for real-time face recognition applications in resource-constrained environmentssuch asIoT-based surveillance and smart security systems. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Comprehensive multimodal approach for Parkinson’s disease classification using artificial intelligence: insights and model explainability

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder affecting millions worldwide. Early detection is vital for effective management, yet remains challenging. In this study, we investigated four distinct datasets for PD detection. Through comprehensive experimentation employing ensemble methods and feature selection, we achieved high classification accuracies across the datasets. For the Oxford Parkinson’s Disease Detection Dataset, an accuracy of 95.67%, precision of 97.59%, recall of 84.5%, specificity of 99.32%, and F1-score of 90.57% were achieved. For the Alzheimer Parkinson Diseases 3 Class Dataset, the "Stacking" approach surpasses individual models, reaching an accuracy of 99.85%, precision of 99.81%, recall of 99.81%, specificity of 99.86%, and F1 of 99.81%. For the NewHandPD dataset, Regarding the Spiral category, The "Base-P32-384" model surpasses others with an accuracy of 97.35%, precision of 96.50%, recall of 98.57%, and F1-score of 97.53%. The collective "Stacking" approach proves highly effective regarding the Circle category, achieving 100% across all performance metrics. Regarding the Meander category, the "Base-P16-224" model achieves an accuracy of 97.35%, precision of 99.26%, recall of 95.71%, specificity of 99.19%, and F1 of 97.45%. The Mobile Device Voice Recordings at King’s College London (MDVR-KCL) dataset contains two datasets. Regarding the "SpontaneousDialogue" dataset, accuracy, BAC, precision, recall, specificity, and F1-score were computed, resulting in values of 94.03%, 92.83%, 90.78%, 100.0%, and 85.67%, respectively. Regarding the "ReadText" dataset, accuracy, BAC, precision, recall, specificity, and F1-score were computed, resulting in values of 91.89%, 90.62%, 87.5%, 100.0%, and 81.25%, respectively. LightHand99K: A Synthetic Dataset for Hand Pose Estimation With Wrist-Worn Cameras

Although hand-pose estimation using external camera systems has made significant progress driven by large annotated datasets, wrist-worn camera-based hand-pose estimation offers unique advantages owing to its ability to capture nearby images. However, datasets primarily collected from multi-angle external systems are unsuitable for wrist-camera-based estimation. To address this gap, we developed LightHand99K, a synthetic dataset comprising 99,792 synthetic RGB hand images designed explicitly for hand-pose estimation using wrist-worn cameras. The dataset was generated using a Unity 3D-based hand image generator optimized to efficiently enhance the performance of hand-pose estimation models for wrist-worn camera images by incorporating human finger joint movement information while minimizing computational cost. This tool allows users to customize their poses, camera angles, backgrounds, lighting, and hand-orientation settings. Incorporating three data augmentation techniques, LightHand99K demonstrated a 36% increase in area under the curve (AUC) and a 6.2-mm reduction in average endpoint error (EPE) compared to existing datasets. These results underscore the value of LightHand99K in advancing hand-pose estimation, particularly in wrist-worn camera applications. © 2013 IEEE.
