White shark optimizer via support vector machine for video-based gender classification system

Gender identification from videos is a challenging task with significant real-world applications, such as video content analysis and social behavior research. In this study, we propose a novel approach, the White Shark Optimizer-Support Vector Machine (WSO-SVM), tailored specifically for gender identification from video data. The WSO-SVM integrates the White Shark Optimizer, a bio-inspired optimization algorithm mimicking the hunting behavior of white sharks, with the Support Vector Machine, a powerful machine learning technique for classification. By combining these two methods, we aim to exploit the advantages of both algorithms and enhance gender identification accuracy. To evaluate the performance of the WSO-SVM in gender identification, the work conducted extensive experiments using a diverse dataset of video clips containing individuals of various genders and backgrounds. The work compared the results with conventional SVM-based gender identification and state-of-the-art methods. The findings demonstrate that the WSO-SVM achieves superior accuracy in gender identification compared to traditional SVM-based approaches. The WSO-SVM's ability to efficiently explore the solution space and select optimal SVM parameters contributes to its improved performance. Moreover, the WSO-SVM exhibits robustness in handling variations in lighting conditions, poses, and facial expressions, making it well-suited for real-world video-based gender identification tasks. The outcomes derived from the SVM approach demonstrate that WSO-SVM produced an average FPR of 7.14%, Sensitivity of 93.06%, Specificity of 92.86%, Precision of 91.0%, and overall accuracy of 93.00% in 45.83 s with a recognition time of 45.83 s. © The Author(s) 2025.

Apple Leaf Disease Detection Using Transfer Learning

Automated detection of plant diseases is crucial as it simplifies the task of monitoring large farms and identifies diseases at their early stages to mitigate further plant degradation. Besides the decline in plant health, reduced production severely impacts the country’s economy. Traditional disease identification methods, relying on human experts, are slow, time-consuming, and impractical for large farms. Our proposed model utilizes a combination of pre-trained Resnet18, Alexnet, GoogLeNet, and VGG16 networks to classify apple tree leaves into categories such as healthy, black rot, apple cedar rust, and apple scab based on images. Various image enhancement techniques were employed to enhance the model’s accuracy. Ultimately, our model achieved an accuracy of 97.25% on the validation dataset, demonstrating excellent performance across various metrics. Plant disease causes a highly significant impact on production due to its destructive characteristics. A variety of chemical techniques should be applied to agriculture at different stages of disease infestation to enable precise plant protection. The integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for obtaining high-resolution images has become necessary due to the growing demand for precision agriculture, making crop health monitoring more efficient. In this study, we developed an innovative approach that combines the Deep Radial Basis Function Network (DRBFN) with the Multidimensional Mixed Attention (MMA) method. Since DRBFNs use radial basis functions as effective feature extractors, the model can detect even the smallest changes in the composition, color, and texture of leaves. This capability is particularly helpful when dealing with a diversity of plant species and pathogens exhibiting different symptoms. By deliberately considering pertinent spatial and spectral attributes, MMA is applied to enhance the discriminatory abilities of the network. By integrating spatial and spectral attention, the network can efficiently acquire information from both local and global sources, thereby enhancing the overall resilience and precision of the detection system. Our proposed model leverages UAV-captured images to achieve a classification accuracy of 96.95% in identifying leaf diseases across two different plant species. The integration of mixed attention mechanisms improved feature representation, leading to a 47.63% reduction in Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) compared to traditional methods. Furthermore, our model demonstrates significant efficiency by processing 2000 images, making it suitable for real-time applications. These results underscore the potential of UAV-based systems combined with advanced deep learning techniques for precision agriculture, offering scalable solutions for early disease detection and management. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to S

Utilizing interpolation techniques (IT) within reversible data hiding (RDH) algorithms presents the advantage of a substantial embedding capacity. Nevertheless, prevalent algorithms often straightforwardly embed confidential data into non-reference pixels without accounting for the relationships between neighboring pixels. This practice results in suboptimal visual quality in the stego images. To rectify this issue, we have introduced the augmentation and modification interpolation (AMI). Additionally, we have devised two variant Sudoku matrices to facilitate distinct data-hiding strategies tailored for different types of reference pixels: Single type and Paired type. By incorporating these innovative designs, the interpolation operation now preserves the pattern-level information of the block in the original image, rather than focusing solely on the pixel level. In assessing the effectiveness of our proposed scheme, we performed experiments utilizing two representative image datasets. The outcomes of these experiments validate that our scheme attains an average PSNR of 44.11 dB and an average hiding capacity of 1.63 bpp. Consequently, it is affirmed that the advantage offered by our proposed scheme is well-suited for scenarios demanding high-quality stego images. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Nowadays, maternal health during pregnancy is a major concern, especially in rural areas where risks are increased by a lack of medical experts and poor infrastructure. The lack of effective methods for predicting maternal health risks poses a significant challenge in maternal healthcare. Traditional approaches often fall short of accurately identifying and managing complications during pregnancy, leading to adverse outcomes. To overcome, this new technique can accurately assess medical data in order to forecast threats to maternal health. This research investigates machine learning algorithms' potential in predicting such risks using medical data. The study utilizes a carefully curated dataset called the Maternal Health Risk Dataset, encompassing parameters like age, blood pressure, glucose levels, body temperature, heart rate, and risk level. Through ensemble learning-based feature engineering, algorithms like Random Forest, XG Boost, Support Vector Classifier (SVC), Decision Tree, and Logistic Multiclass are assessed. Results show Random Forest achieving an impressive accuracy of 94.26%, indicating its potential in maternal health risk prediction, crucial for minimizing adverse outcomes and enabling timely interventions during pregnancy. © 2024 IEEE.

A moment-based pooling approach in convolutional neural networks for breast cancer histopathology image classification

Automated analysis of breast cancer (BC) histopathology images is a challenging task due to the high resolution, multiple magnifications, color variations, the presence of image artifacts, and morphological variability in the tissue images, often resulting in misdiagnosis. We propose four CNN models using a novel Zernike moments (ZMs)-based pooling approach, which replaces the existing global average pooling for the effective classification, referred to as CZP-CNN, MZP-CNN, SPMZP-CNN, and SPCZP-CNN. We utilize the ZMs-based pooling at three intermediate and last convolution layers. Of the four models, the two models, SPMZP-CNN and SPCZP-CNN, employ spatial pyramidal structures of feature maps to represent global and local characteristics of the feature maps. They effectively integrate the ZMs of various orders derived from the pyramidal representation of a feature map, representing the global and local aspects of shape and fine morphological details. The ability of ZMs is fully utilized to capture shape and morphological information available in the feature map using only a few low-order moments, which adds to the robustness of the proposed approach. Detailed experimental results on the publicly available BreaKHis dataset with four magnification levels and on the high-resolution BACH dataset demonstrate the proposed models’ effectiveness, robustness, and generalization ability. Among these proposed models, the complex ZMs-based SPCZP-CNN model achieves an impressive mean classification accuracy of 94.16% on the BreaKHis dataset and overall best binary and multiclass classification accuracy of 96.25% and 93.75% on the BACH dataset. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Space/air communications have been envisioned as an essential part of the next-generation mobile communication networks for providing highquality global connectivity. However, the inherent broadcasting nature of wireless propagation environment and the broad coverage pose severe threats to the protection of private data. Emerging covert communications provides a promising solution to achieve robust communication security. Aiming at facilitating the practical implementation of covert communications in space/air networks, we present a tutorial overview of its potentials, scenarios, and key technologies. Specifically, first, the commonly used covertness constraint model, covert performance metrics, and potential application scenarios are briefly introduced. Then, several efficient methods that introduce uncertainty into the covert system are thoroughly summarized, followed by several critical enabling technologies, including joint resource allocation and deployment/trajectory design, multi-antenna and beamforming techniques, reconfigurable intelligent surface(RIS), and artificial intelligence algorithms. Finally, we highlight some open issues for future investigation.

A Human Word Association Based Model for Topic Detection in Social Networks

With the widespread use of social networks, detecting the topics discussed on these platforms has become a significant challenge. Current approaches primarily rely on frequent pattern mining or semantic relations, often neglecting the structure of the language. Language structural methods aim to discover the relationships between words and how humans understand them. Therefore, this paper introduces a topic detection framework for social networks based on the concept of imitating the mental ability of word association. This framework employs the Human Word Association method and includes a specially designed extraction algorithm. The performance of this method is evaluated using the FA-CUP dataset, a benchmark in the field of topic detection. The results indicate that the proposed method significantly improves topic detection compared to other methods, as evidenced by Topic-recall and the keyword F1 measure. Additionally, to assess the applicability and generalizability of the proposed method, a dataset of Telegram posts in the Persian language is used.
