Balanced management of innovative risks in the process of innovative development

The article considers the issues of balanced management of innovative industrial risks as a mechanism to increase the efficiency of organizations innovative development. The place of this complex of management measures in the overall management system in the process of introducing innovations in the face of uncertainty and risks is determined. An augmented model of balanced management is proposed taking into account the innovative nature of company development and the risk factor. The role of innovative industrial risks is defined as a limitation of innovative development, and a method for effectiveness assessment of their balanced management by assessing the complex level of system survivability is developed. Thanks to this method, it is possible not only to assess the quality of the innovative industrial risks management system, but also to identify ways for its improvement and development.

The importance of carrying competitions among students of general education institutions and the effectiveness of these activities as a means of developing the cognitive interest of students are shown. The article describes the experience of carrying competitions among schoolchildren and students of colleges, accumulated in the Kazan National Research Technological University. It is shown that these activities allow to reveal the creative potential of participants, and form the interest in engineering and design activities, which subsequently affects the choice of school leavers who are in demand in the modern labour market of specialties and professions.

The innovative approach to environmental safety upgrade of pumping-circulatory equipment of drilling rigs based on the analysis of life history and continuous perfection principles. Examples of implementation of innovative approach in environmental safety investigation of oil and gas wells in order to define environmentally hazardous units of equipment and technological processes are given. In order to solve the problem of environmental safety improvement and the effectiveness of flushing out of well that are being drilled a modernized scheme of drilling rig pumping-circulatory system has been designed. System approach of modernizing separate elements of pumping-circulatory system has been used. The maximum air-tight pumping-circulatory drilling rig system has been designed. The proposed model takes into account the necessity of hazardous evaporations outlet with the aim of their further utilization. Such an approach will avoid the entry harmful substances into the environment and prevent harmful effects of aggressive substances on health personnel of drilling rig, environment and on state of the technological equipment.

Visual conventions are perceptually efficient graphic agreements with common-sense like referents and are commonly used in what we interact with in daily life. It becomes a studying-worthy issue on whether such conventions can enhance performances and reduce cognitive load when we perceive and reason about new knowledge. Furthermore, whether the visual conventions can affect experts, who have prior knowledge and design experience about different visual encoding principles the same degree as novice who have no background knowledge in this area, is another research focus in this study. Our research is carried out according to action features when we read visualizations. Four task features are extracted, based on which behavioral and eye-tracking measurement were conducted, that is data localization, simple and complex data comparison, and knowledge inference. Both expert and novice participants were enrolled in our experiment. The result indicates that conventional elements in visualizations can hugely improve performances in more complex tasks involving higher-level cognition, like making comparisons and reasoning about new knowledge. The performance improvement can be seen from shorter response time on achieving conclusions and higher accuracy rates. Meanwhile, cognitive load, which can be measured from shorter total fixation duration and fewer fixation counts in AOIs, is reduced through applying visually conventional features. No statistically significant difference is found in comparing perceptual and inferential outputs of expert and novice group. We draw conclusions that visual conventions in visualizations can better performance in relatively complex activities, and it can be equally perceived and acquired regardless of the user’s knowledge background is. What we conclude in this study can be extended to areas of dynamic data visualization and layout design in the digital interface domain. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

Formal Verification is a computationally expensive step in the verification of today's complex hardware designs. Effective results can be obtained from formal runs by planning ahead the effort and cost that are required for them. Additionally estimating in-advance the expected formal's complexity promotes a lot of potential tricks and clever setup techniques to overcome the initial push-button capacity limitation of the formal verifies and improve their capabilities to handle designs with higher complexity. This paper illustrates the application of regression machine learning (ML) techniques to build an estimation model for the cost of formal verification. Up to 10,000 formal verification runs on RTL designs with good varieties of design/properties attributes are used to learn the relationship between HW designs and the final formal cost in terms of formal run time. We demonstrate the use of Ridge-Regression to decide on the bias-variance trade-off during the regression-model design step as well as the application of Lasso-Regression for the feature selection phase. Finally a comparison between the proposed multiple linear regression approach and another non-parametric K-nearest neighbors kernel based regression technique is done to conclude on the presented work. Our results indicate how the proposed model managed to estimate with reasonable error ratio the expected formal verification effort for new-to-verify HW designs. © 2016 IEEE.

In Fall 2014, a large Midwestern land-grant research university piloted a competency-based model as the foundation for an undergraduate transdisciplinary program focusing on connecting engineering and technology with humanities and social sciences. Students enrolled in this program progress through a set of competencies that require them to master cross-disciplinary and cross-functional skills needed to be successful in a 21stcentury workplace. Now in its second year, the competency-based program has undergone significant changes that include a more substantial definition of competencies at each of the three levels of competence (developing, emerging, and proficient), scaffolding needed to support students on their path towards gaining competencies, and significant mentoring by faculty, TAs, and professional advisers to support competency attainment. In this paper, we will share challenges and discoveries made by the faculty throughout the first two years of the novel Competency-Based Education (CBE) experience, including a reflection on how such experiences impacted modifications of the CBE model from Year 1 to Year 2, the ways in which the program supported individual attainment and management of competencies by students, and the value of the mentorship program in supporting student-driven learning paths. We will also share insights into students' perceptions of the benefits, challenges, and frustrations of being part of this pilot program based on interview and survey data provided by the 33 members of the initial cohort. This overview of the ways this program supported students in attaining competencies through coursework, individual mentoring, and scaffolding may be instructive as institutions seek to bring CBE to scale and increase holistic student learning for the 21stcentury. © American Society for engineering Education, 2016.

When engaged in design activity, what does a designer think about? And how does she draw on disciplinary knowledge, precedent, and other strategies in her design process in order to imagine new possible futures? In this paper, we explore design Heuristics as a form of intermediate-level knowledge that may explain how designers build on existing knowledge of "design moves"-non-deterministic, generative strategies or heuristics-during conceptual design *** a set of relationships between disciplinary training and the acquisition of such heuristics, and postulate how design students might accelerate their development of expertise. We conclude with implications for future research on the development of expertise, and the ways in which methods such as design Heuristics can enhance this developmental process. © 2016 TEMPUS Publications.

Integration of materials such as GaN, InP, SiGe, and Si is a natural extension of the 3D-IC perspective and provides a unique solution for high performance circuits. In this approach, application of a component is no longer dependent on semiconductor material selection. In this paper, preliminary results are presented which examine the thermal performance of the technology. A thermal analysis prototype solution in Mentor graphics™ Calibre® provides surface heat maps based on IC layout, material property, and geometric configuration files. Chiplets are connected by heterogeneous interconnect (HIC). Differences in thermal performance of GaN and InP chiplets are explored by varying the number of HICs. Two methods for building up the model of a test chip are compared. One method uses custom scripts to place discrete blocks in the model to represent HICs, while the other uses thermal material properties extracted from the layout. Measurements presented confirm simulated results. © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper, we present a new approach for automatic test case generation with symbolic execution on virtual model. The test case generation is based on the concept of constrained-based and assertion-based techniques. We use the constrained-based technique in order to show preferences for the generated test cases and to obtain the desired goal of functional coverage. Basic idea of our technique is generating test cases from assertions. We used the assertion functions of the symbolic executor tool KLEE. With such setting, KLEE will carry out the virtual model through different paths in order to reach the assertion. Hence, the related test cases will validate the coverage of the assertion. To trigger the device to go through several states, we developed an additional method based on special functional coverage criteria. We present preliminary results on the test cases generation using a case study from ARM QEMU models. Our experimental results show that the proposed approach is efficient.
