Topology control in ad hoc networks is a multi-criteria optimization problem involving (contradictory) objectives of connectivity, interference, and power minimization. Additionally, nodes can be unreliable, which adds another dimension to an already challenging problem. In this paper, we study topology control problems in ad hoc networks under node failures for arbitrary node distributions. We consider a simple and natural stochastic failure model, in which each node can fail independently with a given probability. The topology control problem under stochastic failures is to choose a power level for each node and a subset of edges such that the residual graph (i.e., the graph formed by the nodes which have not failed) is connected and can be scheduled efficiently, with high probability. We develop provably efficient bi-criteria approximation algorithms for this problem that simultaneously minimize power, reduce interference, and ensure that the surviving graph is connected with high probability. Our algorithms can be implemented efficiently in a distributed manner.

One of the most crucial challenges for classifiers is generalization. In this paper, we present a novel and systematic multiresolution learning approach for neural network classifiers to improve their generalization performance on classification tasks with feature based input space. The proposed approach adopts agglomerative hierarchical clustering to generate coarser resolution training data from the original data because hierarchical clustering captures the detailed structure of clustering for any given data set in feature space, and an effective algorithm is developed to automatically extract critical coarser resolution levels for each class. The proposed approach is thoroughly evaluated through experiments on six real-world benchmark data sets, where traditional learning (i.e., single resolution learning) is used as the baseline. The empirical results demonstrate that multiresolution learning significantly improves neural network classifiers' generalization performance when compared to the baseline, especially for very difficult tasks.

This work is motivated by the need to develop decentralized P2P approaches to support learning and teaching activity in virtual *** this paper, we present the stimulation effects of the SmartBox for e-learning using JXTA-overlay P2P system. We also show the design and implementation of the SmartBox environment that is used for stimulating the learners motivation to increase the learning efficiency. The SmartBox is integrated with our P2P system as a useful tool for monitoring and controlling learners' activity. We found by experimental results thatthe SmartBox is an effective way to increase the learner's concentration. We also investigated the relation between learner's body movement, concentration, and amount of study. We found that when the learner is solving more exerciseshe has more body *** shows that when the number of body movements is hight,the learner's concentration is high. We also consider the feasibility of our P2P platform to integrate different computational end-devices.

In this paper, we present the implementation and analysis of our testbed considering the link quality window size (LQWS) parameter of optimized link state routing (OLSR) and better approach to mobile ad-hoc networking (B.A.T.M.A.N.) protocols. We investigate the effect of mobility in the throughput of a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET). The mobile nodes move toward the destination at a regular speed. When the mobile nodes arrive at the corner, they stop for about three seconds. In our experiments, we consider two cases: only one node is moving (mobile node)and two nodes (intermediate nodes) are moving at the same time. We assess the performance of our testbed in terms of throughput, round trip time, jitter and packet loss. From our experiments, we found that throughput of TCP was improved by reducing LQWS.

This work is motivated by the need to develop decentralized P2P approaches to support learning and teaching activity in virtual universities. In this paper, we present the implementation of the JXTA-based e-learning P2P system. We also show the design and implementation of a SmartBox environment that will be used for stimulating the learners to increase the learning efficiency. The proposed e-learning P2P system is a useful tool for monitoring and controlling learnerspsila activity. We evaluate the proposed system by experimental results and show that proposed system has a good performance. In the future, we aim to use it in real virtual campus environments.

Wireless networks have become increasingly popular and advances in wireless communications and electronics have enabled the development of different kind of networks such as mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs), wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and wireless sensor-actor networks (WSANs). These networks have different kind of characteristics, therefore new protocols that fit their features should be developed. We have developed a simulation system to test MANETs, WSNs and WSANs. In this paper, we consider the performance behavior of two protocols: AODV and DSR using TwoRayGround model and Shadowing model for lattice and random topologies. We study the routing efficiency and compare the performance of two protocols for different scenarios. By computer simulations, we found that for large number of nodes when we used TwoRayGround model and random topology, the DSR protocol has a better performance. However, when the transmission rate is higher, the routing efficiency parameter is unstable.

In this paper, we consider the performance behavior of two protocols: AODV and DSR using TwoRayGround model. We study the routing efficiency of the ad-hoc sensor network and compare the performance of two protocols for different scenarios using the routing efficiency concept. By computer simulations, we found that the routing efficiency of DSP protocol is better than AODV protocol.

Cluster formation and cluster head selection are important problems in sensor network applications and can drastically affect the networkpsilas communication energy dissipation. However, the selection of cluster head is not easy in different environments which may have different characteristics. In this paper, in order to deal with this problem we propose a power reduction algorithm for sensor networks based on fuzzy logic and number of neighbor nodes. We evaluate the proposed system by simulations and show that proposed system makes a good selection of the cluster head.

Many handover algorithms are proposed in the literature. However, to make a better handover and keep the QoS in wireless networks is very difficult. In this paper, we propose a new handover system based on fuzzy logic. The proposed system uses 3 parameters for handoff decision: the change of signal strength of the present Base Station (BS), signal strength from the neighbor BS, and the distance between Mobile Station (MS) and BS. The performance evaluation via simulations shows that proposed system can avoid ping-pong effect and has a good handover decision.

Due to the opportunities provided by the Internet, people are taking advantage of e-learning courses and during the last few years enormous research efforts have been dedicated to the development of e-learning systems. So far, many e-learning systems are proposed and used practically. However, in these systems the e-learning completion rate is low. One of the reasons is the low study desire and motivation. In our previous work, we implemented a e-learning system that is able to increase the learning efficiency by stimulating learners motivation. In this work, we designed and implemented new functions to improve the system performance.
