Using the concept of duality between points and planes in 3D projective space, an explicit and efficient method of computer-aided design for developable surfaces based on Bezier and B-spline basis functions is proposed. By the result that a developable surface is the envelope of a single-parameter family of planes, we give the parametric equation of a Bezier and B-spline developable surface, and discuss respectively properties of Bezier and B-spline representations. Meanwhile, we also present a simplified geometric-construction for developable surfaces, that is, G2 Beta restraint condition algorithm for G2 continuity between two developable surfaces. It is shown that the geometric construction technique that exists for curves also can be generalized to the design of developable surfaces. © 2007 IEEE.

Story board creation can be an alternative way of teaching visual problem solving. Expressing a concept or idea showing action, or thinking a problem through from start to finish can be done through storyboards. The very name 'storyboard' implies the ability to tell a story or communicate an idea. The story can be abstract or concrete, however, it requires the student to think through the process and figure out how to present the idea. It can be serious or it can be fun, however, storyboarding asks a student to present an idea in an interesting and carefully crafted manner. This can be done with a pencil or on the computer;however, the tool is not the emphasis. The focus is on the process of developing an idea and communicating it visually. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2006.

Virtual Reality leads Digital Product Development technology to a more effective and convenient way by presenting the product model in an immersive real 3D environment. Distributed VR even enables partners to discuss the design of the product independent of their locations. This paper introduces our work with a Digital Product Development System with Virtually Cooperating Teams Using High Bandwidth Networks-ProViT, which aims at building up immersive telepresence systems for design review across high-bandwidth networks. Video and audio streaming are integrated in the virtual environment to support immersive teleconference aspects of the distributed design review sessions. A network management system has been developed for the supervision, maintenance and processing of distributed setups, and network security. © 2006 World Scientific Publishing Company.

This course provides an introduction to acting and drawing techniques used to develop stronger character animation. Physical warm ups, trust and improvisation will be introduced. Participants will physically participate in theater games and drawing methods. The exercises will inspire an instinctive understanding of staging principles, thumbnail drawing, animal personification, mime, emotional recall and audience awareness. Participants will view demonstrations of acting and drawing by lecturers. Each participant will be provided with theater props, animation paper and pencils for exercises. Animation, from Siggraph's Animation and Electronic Theater, will spotlight excellent acting in animation examples during the course.

Embedded systems consist of interacting components that are required to deliver a specific functionality under constraints on execution rates and relative time separation of the components. In this article, we model an embedded system using concurrent processes interacting through synchronization. We assume that there are rate constraints on the execution rates of processes imposed by the designer or the environment of the system, where the execution rate of a process is the number of its executions per unit time. We address the problem of computing bounds on the execution rates of processes constituting an embedded system, and propose an interactive rate analysis framework. As part of the rate analysis framework we present an efficient algorithm for checking the consistency of the rate constraints. Bounds on the execution rate of each process are computed using an efficient algorithm based on the relationship between the execution rate of a process and the maximum mean delay cycles in the process graph. Finally, if the computed rates violate some of the rate constraints, some of the processes in the system are redesigned using information from the rate analysis step. This rate analysis framework is implemented in a tool called RATAN. We illustrate by an example how RATAN can be used in an embedded system design. © 1999 ACM.

Elmore delay has been widely used as an analytical estimate of interconnect delays in the performance-driven synthesis and layout of VLSI routing topologies. However, for typical RLC interconnections with ramp input, Elmore delay can deviate by up to 100% or more from SPICE-computed delay since it is independent of rise time of the input ramp signal. We develop new analytical delay models based on the first and second moments of the interconnect transfer function when the input is a ramp signal with finite rise time. Delay estimates using our first moment based analytical models are within 4% of SPICE-computed delay, and models based on both first and second moments are within 2.3% of SPICE, across a wide range of interconnect parameter values. Evaluation of our analytical models is several orders of magnitude faster than simulation using SPICE. We also describe extensions of our approach for estimation of source-sink delays in arbitrary interconnect trees.

Developing a prototype concurrent design tool for composite topside structures

He completed his bachelor of science degree in aeropace and ocean engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1985 and his master of science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Maryland in 1990. Mr. Dirlik recently completed a master of science program in applied physics at The Johns Hopins University and currently works in the Radar Cross Section and Target Physics Branch of the Signatures Directorate at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Corderoke Division. He has worked on Navy low observable programs since 1990. Stephen Hambric:is a research associate at the Applied Research Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his B. S. and M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and his D. Sc. in mechnical engineering from the George Washington University. He has worked on several computer aided multidiscikplinary design and optimization projects over the years including an automated propeller design system and a structural acoustic optimization capability. Dr. Shpour Azarm:is currently working as an associate professor with the Design and Manufacturing Group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of maryland at College Park. Dr Azarm's expertise is in the areas of optimization-based designed and concurrent design and optimization of multidisciplinary systems. He was a consultant at Black & Decker Corporation (summer 1996) and worked as a Navy senior summer faculty fellow (summer 1995) and a NASA summer faculty fellow (summer 1994). He was a visiting scientist at NASA Langley Research Center for Multidisciplinary Analysis and Applied Structural Optimzatiom at the University of Siegen in Germany (spring 1992) and the Design Institute of the Technical University of Denmark (summer 1990). A prototype concurrent engineering tool has been developed for the preliminary design of composite topside structures for modern navy warships. This tool, named GELS for the Concurrent Engineering of Layered Structures, provides designers with an immediate assessment of the impacts of their decisions on several disciplines which are important to the performance of a modern naval topside structure, including electromagnetic interference effects (EMI), radar cross section (RCS), structural integrity, cost, and weight. Preliminary analysis modules in each of these disciplines are integrated to operate from a common set of design variables and a common materials database. Performance in each discipline and an overall fitness function for the concept are then evaluated. A graphical user interface (GUI) is used to define requirements and to display the results from the technical analysis modules. Optimization techniques, including feasible sequential quadratic programming (FSQP) and exhaustive search are used to modify the design variables to satisfy all requirements simultaneously. The development of this tool, the technical modules, and their integration are discussed noting the decisions and compromises required to develop and integrate the modules into a prototype conceptual design tool.

An efficient coding method based on wavelet transform is presented for color *** tristimulus signals R,G,B of the original images are first converted into the Y,I,Q signals,whichare then decomposed into the luminance and edge subimages with the wavelet ***,the edgesubimages are encoded with edge pattern vector quantization while the cosine transform coding method isused to encode the luminance *** results are obtained for coding of color images in thebitrate range from 0.24 to 0.50 bits/***,because of the simplicity of the structure in ourmethod,it is suitable for hardware implementation,and can be used in real time encoding system.
