Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder and an accurate forecast of seizures would help to overcome the patient's uncertainty and helplessness. In this contribution, we present and discuss a novel methodology for the classification of intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) for seizure prediction. Contrary to previous approaches, we categorically refrain from an extraction of hand-crafted features and use a convolutional neural network (CNN) topology instead for both the determination of suitable signal characteristics and the binary classification of preictal and interictal segments. Three different models have been evaluated on public datasets with long-term recordings from four dogs and three patients. Overall, our findings demonstrate the general applicability. In this survey, we examine how making emerged as an interdisciplinary arena of scholarship, research and design that connects entrepreneurs, designers, researchers, critical theorists, historians, anthropologists, computer scientists and engineers. HCI is one among many other fields and domains that has declared having a stake in making. And yet, a lot of what and who defines making is happening outside the familiar research laboratory or design studio. We take this article as an opportunity to reflect on HCI's relationship to making and how this relationship has changed over the last years. Making, we argue, presents HCI with the opportunity to question and revisit underlying principles and long-held aspirations and values of the field. Exactly because HCI and making share some fundamental ideals such as user empowerment and the democratization of participation and technology production, making confronts us with both the potential and the unintended consequences of our own work. © 2017 J. Many engineering colleges have been facing the retention problem in engineering programs due to difficulties and lack of knowledge about what really means being an engineer. It is mainly due to the fact that the first 3 years are particularly intense and hard. A possible way to overcome this period is to implement a new kind of course more attractive and dynamic, which is the idea of COPEC's engineering education research team, to embed a course with a more interesting activity for students in the first year. It is a short-term workshop in order to show the students the possibilities of performing as engineers in a global environment - a project developed for a private university in order to augment the retention rate in their engineering courses.

An energy-aware task consolidation algorithm for cloud computing data centre

Energy efficiency has become an increasingly prominent issue in cloud computing. Task consolidation is an effective way to maximise utilisation of cloud computing resources and reduce energy consumption. Presented in this paper is an improved energy-aware task consolidation algorithm to optimise the scheduling of tasks in cloud computing data centres. Our algorithm was developed based on the linear relationship between energy consumption and the CPU utilisation. Instead of consolidating tasks to a service node until its CPU utilisation reaches 100%, our algorithm uses an optimal point, where the CPU utilisation of a service node reaches 70%, and ensures that every task is preferentially assigned to service nodes that satisfy the 70% CPU utilisation. Our experiments demonstrate that our algorithm can significantly reduce the energy consumption of cloud computing data centres without performance degradation while maintaining good performance compared to the energy-conscious task consolidation (ECTC) approach. This paper is a work in progress research to practice project developed in order to enhance the quality of engineering programs. It is a fact that the so called global work market has become challenging and increasingly multicultural The not so new trend for university programs is the internationalization that is a strategic element to raise the quality of courses and thus attracts more students. This trend has made many universities to revise and update their strategies so that their students and their graduates can have the essential academic and professional skills that allow them to enter and to stay in the work market. Although it is not the only measure that guarantees a good course it adds value for the formation of the new professional. The objective is to make it more attractive and promote the double diploma in order to higher the quality of the offered programs.

The article presents the results of experimental research of thermal processes in industrial premises with energy-saving technologies of heating and their analysis by geometric modeling tools and graphic computer technologies. The effectiveness of using the method of forced feeding of air heated by infrared emitter involving compromise graphical optimization was analyzed by geometric way.

This paper shows the early research findings of utilizing a virtual reality environment as an educational tool for the operation of a computerized numerical control (CNC) milling machine. Based off of a previous work, the Advanced Virtual Machining Lab (AVML), this project features a virtual environment in which a virtual CNC machine is fully operable, designed to allow STEM students and training professionals to learn the use of the CNC machine without the need to be in a physical lab. Users operate in the virtual environment using an immersive virtual reality headset (i.e. Oculus Rift) and standard input devices (i.e. mouse and keyboard), both of which combined make for easy movement and realistic visuals. On-screen tutorials allow users to learn about what they need to do to operate the machine without the need for outside instruction. While designing and perfecting this environment has been the primary focus of this project thus far, the research goal is to test the ease of use and the pedagogical effectiveness of the immersive technology as it relates to education in STEM fields. Initial usability studies for this environment featured students from the graduate level CAD/CAM-Theory and Advanced Applications (ME 54600) course at IUPUI. Results from the study were tabulated with a survey using a four-point Likert scale and several open-ended questions. Findings from the survey indicate that the majority of users found the environment realistic and easy to navigate, in addition to finding the immersive technology to be beneficial. Many also indicated that they felt comfortable navigating the environment without the need for additional assistance from the survey proctors. Full details on the first usability study, including data and discussion, can be found in this paper. Effectively analyzing failure mechanisms is critical for ensuring safety and reliability aspects in embedded systems. This requires close collaborations between the system engineers who design the system and the safety experts who analyze the failures. To support this process, we present an interactive visual environment, called ESSAVis++, that helps in extracting the required safety information about the failure mechanisms in the underlying embedded system. In this paper, we focus mainly on the conducted user evaluation study to compare between ESSAVis++ and ESSaRel (a tool used in industry) in terms of accuracy, efficiency, and user acceptance. The goal was to determine the suitability and effectiveness of a common interactive visual environment that would be used by the system engineers and safety experts during the safety analysis process in embedded systems. Results indicate an increase in participants’ efficiency and accuracy levels using the ESSAVis++ platform, due to the visual support and provided interaction options. We also observed a high acceptance rate among the participants towards ESSAVis++, mainly due to its intuitive visualizations. © AlTarawneh et al.

We present a novel way of odometry estimation from Velodyne LiDAR point cloud scans. The aim of our work is to overcome the most painful issues of Velodyne data - the sparsity and the quantity of data points - in an efficient way, enabling more precise registration. Alignment of the point clouds which yields the final odometry is based on random sampling of the clouds using Collar Line Segments (CLS). The closest line segment pairs are identified in two sets of line segments obtained from two consequent Velodyne scans. From each pair of correspondences, a transformation aligning the matched line segments into a 3D plane is estimated. By this, significant planes (ground, walls, ...) are preserved among aligned point clouds. Evaluation using the KITTI dataset shows that our method outperforms publicly available and commonly used state-of-the-art method GICP for point cloud registration in both accuracy and speed, especially in cases where the scene lacks significant landmarks or in typical urban elements. For such environments, the registration error of our method is reduced by 75% compared to the original GICP error.

Sport analytics in general and soccer analytics in particular constitute quickly growing markets when it comes to professional analyses and visualizations. From a data analysis research perspective, soccer is a rich source of geospatial and temporal movement data, with high details and a controlled environment. However, soccer movement is complex as its compounds are actions and reactions of two opposing teams with inverse goals. Common analyses performed today are typically oriented towards statistical analysis and considering aggregate measurements. In this work, we propose a set of effective visual-interactive methods for investigating set plays as a first step towards semi-automated analysis of tactic behavior. In our analytic design, we follow the so-called information-seeking Mantra by Ben Shneiderman by providing overview visualizations, interactive refinements, and detailed analysis views. We take an applied approach in showing case studies that give evidence for the applicability and merits of our proposed techniques.
