During the last decade, with the massive growth of smart mobile devices (SMDs), mobile user experience has a dramatic perspective. Addressed to the problem of optimizing resource management in mobile computing, this paper proposes a novel resource management method using the Third Party Broker (TPB) which is designed to consist of four components as Manage Center (MC), Request Manager (RM), Connection Manager (CM), and Processor Manager (PM) to manage respectively the computing resources, user requests,network and services in mobile transparent computing (MTC). By the cooperation between different component, the TPB is able to support the mobile computation-intensive and resource-consuming tasks, and handle the users' requests fluctuation. Such a resource management method serves to effectively utilize local LAN resources to achieve computing tasks of single mobile client, and thus it extends the computing paradigm of MTC with the characteristic of local mobile device computing and remote server storage into that of local LAN computing as well as remote server storage. The proposed method is implemented and deployed in the testbed of MTC, and several experiments are carried out to demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the architecture. Experiment results show that the method is effective and stable in improving resource utilization of mobile computing. © 2015, Fuji technology Press Ltd. All rights reserved.

Port-scan detection is essentially vital to enterprise networks, since many intrusions start with scanning. A port scan can be obvious or subtle in terms of the volume of network traffic. In this paper, we propose a creative approach by combining the characteristic-based method and visual analytics to detect those hard-to-find subtle scans as well as obvious scans in an enterprise environment. The goal of designing this system is to provide useful information and implications about port-scan attackers and benign hosts to a network security team in a simple and efficient manner. The major components of the system consist of three different semantic level visualizations. Through several use cases, we illustrate how the system can detect both obvious and subtle port-scanning activities. The analysis approach proposed in this study proves to be effective by identifying all the port-scan attackers in the data sets. Copyright © 2014 ACM.

Natural disasters can cause huge loss of life, enormous amounts of property damage to the local communities. Although it is impossible to avoid the natural disasters, human sufferings can be reduced by adopting information technologies to the disaster response missions. In this paper, a web-based 3D visualization and cluster computing system was developed to facilitate and expedite the resource distribution process during a disaster. Our disaster management system utilizes state-of- The- Art computing cluster with 16 nodes of Intel Xeon-E5 processors (16 cores per node) to process the emergency supply requests from the disaster victims, and calculate the optimal resource distribution routes with the consideration of the damaged transportation infrastructures. The optimized resource distribution problem was solved with distributed all pair shortest path algorithm and the vehicle routing algorithm. The web-based 3D visualization system was developed with Google earth engine to display the disaster areas, affected households and resource distribution routes. The computation result from the cluster was automatically uploaded to the web-based 3D visualization system, enabling the users to immediately see the optimal resource distribution routes in a virtual 3D environment. The visualization system is flexible and can be easily adapted to a Google earth enabled mobile devices, desktop monitors as well as a Cave automatic virtual environment (CAVE). A historical disaster data from the Northwest Indiana was used to demonstrate the functionalities of the developed system. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2013.

The flipped classroom pedagogy has achieved significant mention in academic circles in recent years. "Flipping" involves the reinvention of a traditional course so that students engage with learning materials via recorded lectures and interactive exercises prior to attending class and then use class time for more interactive activities. Proper implementation of a flipped classroom is difficult to gauge, but combines successful techniques for distance education with constructivist learning theory in the classroom. While flipped classrooms are not a novel concept, technological advances and increased comfort with distance learning have made the tools to produce and consume course materials more pervasive. Flipped classroom experiments have had both positive and less-positive results and are generally measured by a significant improvement in learning outcomes. This study, however, analyzes the opinions of students in a flipped sophomore-level information technology course by using a combination of surveys and reflective statements. The author demonstrates that at the outset students are new - and somewhat receptive - to the concept of the flipped classroom. By the conclusion of the course satisfaction with the pedagogy is significant. Finally, student feedback is provided in an effort to inform instructors in the development of their own flipped classrooms.

This paper evaluates different state-of-the-art approaches for implementing an X-ray view in Augmented Reality (AR). Our focus is on approaches supporting a better scene understanding and in particular a better sense of depth order between physical objects and digital objects. One of the main goals of this work is to provide effective X-ray visualization techniques that work in unprepared outdoor environments. In order to achieve this goal, we focus on methods that automatically extract depth cues from video images. The extracted depth cues are combined in ghosting maps that are used to assign each video image pixel a transparency value to control the overlay in the AR view. Within our study, we analyze three different types of ghosting maps, 1) alpha-blending which uses a uniform alpha value within the ghosting map, 2) edge-based ghosting which is based on edge extraction and 3) image-based ghosting which incorporates perceptual grouping, saliency information, edges and texture details. Our study results demonstrate that the latter technique helps the user to understand the subsurface location of virtual objects better than using alpha-blending or the edge-based ghosting. Online social networks have found a significant increase in their popularity in recent years. All the networks have community structure, and one of the research problems mostly frequently tackled is the discovery of communities. An overlapping community is a network structure that allows one node to be a member of multiple communities. The method presented in this paper aims at detecting overlapping communities in social networks, and its novelty lies in that it combines with the Microblog User Model (MUM) which can reflect the interest of the user accurately. First, the MUM network, which is an undirected and weighted network, is constructed by computing the similarity among MUMs. Afterwords, Overlapping Community Detection based on MUM (OCD-MUM) is performed to partition the network. A community stops expanding when the fitness function reaches a local maximum. The communities detected are locally optimized. A user's interest is not only decided by the MUM, but it is also affected by the communities the user belongs to. The community model can reflect the interest of the community. The MUM is updated with community model of its communities, and therefore the interest of the user can be predicted by these communities. Our experiment result shows that OCD-MUM has a higher modularity Q value than traditional methods and the predicted interest is more close to the real world situations.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is an information technology (IT) policy that allows employees to use their own wireless devices to access internal network at work. Mobile malware is a major security concern that impedes BYOD's further adoption in enterprises. Existing works identify the need for better BYOD security mechanisms that balance between the strength of such mechanisms and the costs of implementing such mechanisms. In this paper, based on the idea of self-reinforced feedback loop, we propose a periodic smartphone sampling mechanism that significantly improve BYOD security mechanism's effectiveness without incurring further costs. We quantify the likelihood that “a BYOD smartphone is infected by malware” by two metrics, vulnerability and uncertainty, and base the iterative sampling process on these two metrics; the updated values of these metrics are fed back into future rounds of the mechanism to complete the feedback loop. We validate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed strategic sampling via simulations driven by publicly available, real-world collected traces.

Adverse drug reactions have become one of the top causes of deaths. For surveillance of adverse drug events, patients have gradually become involved in reporting their experiences with medications through the use of dedicated and structured systems. The emerging of social networking provides a way for patients to describe their drug experiences online in less-structured free text format. We developed a computational approach that collects, processes and analyzes Twitter data for drug effects. Our approach uses a machine-learning- based classifier to classify personal experience tweets, and use NLM's MetaMap software to recognize and extract word phrases that belong to drug effects. Our results on 5 medications demonstrate the validity of our approach, and its ability to correctly extract potential drug effects from the Twitter data. It is conceivable that social media data can serve to complement and/or supplement traditional time-consuming and costly surveillance methods. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

In this demo, we introduce a novel architecture of an engine for high performance multi-scale detection of objects in videos based on WaldBoost training algorithm. The key properties of the architecture include processing of streamed data and low resource consumption. We implemented the engine in FPGA and we show that it can process 640 × 480 pixel video streams at over 160 FPS without the need of external memory. © 2013 IEEE.
