Image retrieval: Techniques, challenge, and trend

This paper attempts to discuss the evolution of the retrieval techniques focusing on development, challenges and trends of the image retrieval. It highlights both the already addressed and outstanding issues. The explosive growth of image data leads to the need of research and development of Image Retrieval. However, Image retrieval researches are moving from keyword, to low level features and to semantic features. Drive towards semantic features is due to the problem of the keywords which can be very subjective and time consuming while low level features cannot always describe high level concepts in the users' mind.

Comparative study of biological pathway structures and composition can aid us in elucidating the functions of newly discovered pathways, understanding evolutionary traits, and determining missing pathway elements. A method has been developed to perform pair-wise comparison and similarity search of biological pathways. The comparison determines the differences of each pair of pathways represented in the XML format. The similarity search uses a scoring mechanism to rank the similarities of the pathway in question against those in the pathway repository. To achieve a reasonably good performance, the method is being implemented using the Condor high performance computing environment.

Virtual neuron is tool that able to provide an extensive neuron cell visualizing and lab-experimenting experience. Its development requires combination efforts of informatics and neurosciences in order to create data acquisition, databasing and computational tool. The requirement to reconstruct neuron model towards greater realism still remains as an essential challenge in biological computing and visualization as to provide abroad appearance of neuron knowledge distribution. This paper enlightens on the ability of computational neuronal modeling as a powerful tool for exploring greater understanding in neuron's developmental processes and structure-function relationships. By this finding, we proposed a design consideration that believes can generate a neuron model with successful and equivalent as per available neuron biological form requirement based on validation from existing neuron visualization. In this proposal, we apply the reconstruction model in generating virtual neuronal morphology integrated with Gouraud shading technique to perform smooth lighting on visualization surface presentation.

With the development of Internet and Intranet, Web and distributed databases have been used more and more widely. It is important to properly handle network and Web database security issues including authentication, denial of service, and fine-grained access control. When database access control and the network security are addressed separately, the security systems are not optimized sufficiently as a whole. This paper propose a method of integrating network security with criterion-based access control to handle network security and the finegrained Web database access control simultaneously. To improve efficiency, the model adopts two step access controls. The first preliminary access control is combined with the firewall function, and the second fine-grained access decisions are determined by the user's digital credentials as well as other factors such as his/her IP address.

Research work in the field of Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs) is represented by a broad spectrum of applications, ranging from environmental monitoring to motion or tracking monitoring. Wireless sensor networks solved many distributed system problems related to scalability and real-time performance, which offer obvious advantages for systems with a large number of components. This system provides a good performance for any time and dose without degrading the degree of performance with the increased system size. In this paper, we present some of detection and tracking protocols defined in sensors over distributed tracking networks. The paper concludes by presenting recent research results in tracking methods, collaborative signal and information processing, tracking multiple moving objects in sensor fields,target classification and location.

Limited capabilities and mission requirements imply that nodes in tactical mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) carry a significant risk of being compromised physically or logically. In addition nodes or groups of nodes may defect, which is a particular concern in coalition environments where networks may spread beyond organizational boundaries. To identify defecting or compromised nodes including Byzantine behavior we propose a clustered intrusion detection architecture. Our architecture exploits multisensor data and supplementary information to identify defectors based on deviations from predicted values and correlated measurements and behavior. Furthermore multi-hop communication complexity is minimized to ensure robustness in environments with limited connectivity and frequent network partitioning. We show that our approach improves accuracy over naive Markov chain and Kullback-Leibler divergence by boosting the number of particles, where probability density functions are highly nonlinear but partially known and can be determined using predictive importance sampling.

This paper presents a method for statistical modeling and classification of motion trajectories using Hidden Markov Models. Mass recordings from visual surveillance are processed to extract objects trajectories. Hidden Markov Models of classes of behaviour are created upon some annotated trajectories. In this way, information about complex object behaviour of objects can be discovered. Additionally, an experiment shows the successful application of Hidden Markov Models on trajectories of people in an underground station in Roma. Finally, a comparison of efficiency on different data sets, is discussed.

This paper describes the video summarization system built for the TRECVID 2008 evaluation by the Brno team. Motivations for the system design and its overall structure are described followed by more detailed description of the critical parts of the system. Low-level features, which are extracted from each frame, are clustered to group visually similar shots together. The final video summary production is an iterative procedure, where the probability, speed and trimming of each cluster candidate are evaluated until some criteria, such as final summary length, are fulfilled. The paper also contains the discussion about appropriate layout of the final video summary, taking into account experiences from the last TRECVID evaluation. The final conclusion points out the weak and strong aspects of the presented approach reflecting system performance in comparison with other state-of-the-art systems. © 2008 ACM.

This paper introduces techniques for the exploration of images augmented with additional information. We present the so-called Meta-Previewer and propose the Cascading-Views which are widgets that can assist the end-user in interactively exploring metadata embedded in augmented images. In this regard, the term Interactive Images [1] will refer to those augmented images which allow the end-user to request further information which is in relation to the entire image or parts of it. Using our tools, data exploration process is accomplished following three steps: (i) getting an overview of the image regions that contain additional information, (ii) requesting and displaying the additional information which is of interest, and (iii) diving into that additional information to get even more information linked with it. ©2008 IEEE.

The need to examine and manipulate large surface models is commonly found in many science, engineering, and medical applications. On a desktop monitor, however, seeing the whole model in detail is not possible. In this paper, we present a new, interactive Focus+Context method for visualizing large surface models. Our method, based on an energy optimization model, allows the user to magnify an area of interest to see it in detail while deforming the rest of the area without perceivable distortion. The rest of the surface area is essentially shrunk to use as little of the screen space as possible in order to keep the entire model displayed on screen. We demonstrate the efficacy and robustness of our method with a variety of models. © 2008 IEEE.
