Most of the current educational mobile apps for children are developed from the perspectives of developed countries. Due to this, many times parents from the developing/underdeveloped countries do not consider these apps fit to their socio-cultural norms. Targeting this concern, we involved the kids, their parents, and their teachers from South of Jordan region in the requirements gathering and the design phases of an educational mobile app. This mobile app would educate and entertain kids through stories while keeping the social-cultural norms of the region. In this work, we present the requirements gathering and the design phase. Further, we provide details of a design evaluation study that we conducted with ten kids at a public school from South of Jordan region to get their feedbacks on our created design and the stories. © 2017 AITarawneh et al.

Structural analysis is a foundational statics concept for students majoring in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and engineering technology, among others. However, the mathematical emphasis of a typical statics courses lies in algebraic calculations, matrices, vectors, and sometimes deemphasizes student understanding of the behavior of the overall structure as a system, focusing instead on its individual elements. This study investigates students' conceptual understanding of forces acting and reacting in a truss structure as well as their corresponding representations in the form of Free Body Diagrams (FBDs). Our findings suggest that students primarily demonstrated partially coherent answers suggesting that they may hold some misconceptions about truss behavior. The most prevalent error was that students failed to account for the mutual (equal and opposite) forces between connected bodies that were separated for analysis. Based on our findings we propose the design of a learning experience that combines principles of embodied learning with the affordances of visuohaptic simulations to address students' misconceptions.

The analysis of invasive team sports often concentrates on cooperative and competitive aspects of collective movement behavior. A main goal is the identification and explanation of strategies, and eventually the development of new strategies. In visual sports analytics, a range of different visual-interactive analysis techniques have been proposed, e.g., based on visualization using for example trajectories, graphs, heatmaps, and animations. Identifying suitable visualizations for a specific situation is key to a successful analysis. Existing systems enable the interactive selection of different visualization facets to support the analysis process. However, an interactive selection of appropriate visualizations is a difficult, complex, and time-consuming task. In this paper, we propose a four-step analytics conceptual workflow for an automatic selection of appropriate views for key situations in soccer games. Our concept covers classification, specification, explanation, and alteration of match situations, effectively enabling the analysts to focus on important game situations and the determination of alternative moves. Combining abstract visualizations with real world video recordings by Immersive Visual Analytics and descriptive storylines, we support domain experts in understanding key situations. We demonstrate the usefulness of our proposed conceptual workflow via two proofs of concept and evaluate our system by comparing our results to manual video annotations by domain experts. Initial expert feedback shows that our proposed concept improves the understanding of competitive sports and leads to a more efficient data analysis.

Blazars are attractive objects for astronomers to observe in order to burrow into the magnetic field in the relativistic jet. This paper presents TimeTubes as a novel visualization scheme that allows astronomers to interactively explore characteristic temporal variation patterns in observed blazar datasets. In the TimeTubes spatialization, the two Stokes parameters and their errors with a common timestamp are transformed into an ellipse. A series of such ellipses are aligned in parallel along the timeline to form a 3D volumetric tube. The resulting tube is then colorized by the observed intensities and colors of the blazar, and finally volume-rendered. A designated user interface is provided with visual exploration functions according to Shneiderman's Visual information Seeking Mantra. In the latest version, an auxiliary mechanism, called visual data fusion, was incorporated to ameliorate data- and mapping-inherent uncertainties for more efficient and effective visual exploration. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The present article is focused on the improvement of the quality of engineering education of graduate students with a major in transport and mechanical engineering through the derivation of a numerical solution of the optimal control problem for payload swaying during crane boom slewing, formulated by Sakawa et al. For the first time, a numerical solution of Sakawa's problem has been derived with an application of *** freeware. The fundamental difference between this solution and Sakawa's is the imposition of a restrictive constraint on the allowable value of payload swaying during boom-driven payload motion. The solution derived by the authors for Sakawa's problem takes exact account of the restrictive constraints on the phase variables in contrast to Sakawa's model, where the restriction constraints on the phase variables have been approximated. The complex of authors-proposed computational algorithms was implemented with ***. The proposed open-code algorithms derive numerical data and computational plots, which enhance and expand students' knowledge about the dynamics of guided boom-driven payload swaying during rotary crane boom slewing. © SAGE Publications.

We present the solid model edit distance(SMED),a powerful and flexible paradigm for exploiting shape similarities amongst CAD *** is designed to measure the magnitude of distortions between two CAD models in boundary representation(B-rep).We give the formal definition by analogy with graph edit distance,one of the most popular graph matching *** avoid the expensive computational cost potentially caused by exact computation,an approximate procedure based on the alignment of local structure sets is provided in *** order to verify the flexibility,we make intensive investigations on three typical applications in manufacturing industry,and describe how our method can be adapted to meet the various ***,a multilevel method is proposed to make further improvements of the presented algorithm on both effectiveness and efficiency,in which the models are hierarchically segmented into the configurations of *** results show that SMED serves as a reasonable measurement of shape similarity for CAD models,and the proposed approach provides remarkable performance on a real-world CAD model database.

The aim of our research is to build an empirical indicator of cinematic immersion based on ocular data. We study immersion as a gradual and adaptive process of corporal involvement in the cinematic experience. To study its temporal evolution, we analyze correlations between the film and the ocular response, in its attentional aspects (what do we see?) and pupillary aspects (how do we react?). To understand in what ways post-production can favor immersion, we are interested in studying the pupil reactivity to visual attributes of the film: the visual abstraction of a non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) post-production and the optical hyperrealism of stereoscopy. We expect that our results could be useful for conceiving new NPR tools for 3D films and innovative post-production strategies for virtual reality.

Studies have shown that Twitter can be used for health surveillance, and personal experience tweets (PETs) are an important source of information for health surveillance. To mine Twitter data requires a relatively balanced corpus and it is challenging to construct such a corpus due to the labor-intensive annotation tasks of large data sets. We developed a bootstrap method of finding PETs with the use of the machine learning-based filter. Through a few iterations, our approach can efficiently improve the balance of two class dataset with a reduced amount of annotation work. To demonstrate the usefulness of our method, a PET corpus related to effects caused by 4 dietary supplements was constructed. In 3 iterations, a corpus of 8,770 tweets was obtained from 108,528 tweets collected, and the imbalance of two classes was significantly reduced from 1:31 to 1:3. In addition, two out of three classifiers used showed improved performance over iterations. It is conceivable that our approach can be applied to various other health surveillance studies that use machine learning-based classifications of imbalanced Twitter data. © BioNLP 2016. Collaborative representation based classifier (CRC) and its probabilistic improvement ProCRC have achieved satisfactory performance in many image classification applications. They, however, do not comprehensively take account of the structure characteristics of the training samples. In this paper, we present an extended probabilistic collaborative representation based classifier (EProCRC) for image classification. Compared with CRC and ProCRC, the proposed EProCRC further considers a prior information that describes the distribution of each class in the training data. This prior information enlarges the margin between different classes to enhance the discriminative capacity of EProCRC. Experiments on two challenging databases, namely CUB200-2011 and Caltech-256, are conducted to evaluate EProCRC, and comparison results demonstrate that it outperforms several state-of-the-art classifiers.
