With advancements in artificial intelligence, computer vision technologies have seen significant progress, enabling applications like facial recognition, autonomous driving, and medical imaging. This study leverages the Multi-Camera Action Dataset (MCAD) and MediaPipe Pose to create a skeletal dataset for training a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model to recognize 18 types of daily actions. Evaluation using confusion matrix and F1 score reveals that Action 16 (Object Carry) is often misclassified as Action 7 (Walk) due to similar leg movements, and Action 9 (Cell to Ear) as Action 1 (Wave) due to similar hand movements. Future work aims to enhance model accuracy and explore broader applications in physical activity and exercise analysis. © 2024 IEEE.

FinGAT: Financial Graph Attention networks for Recommending Top-K Profitable Stocks

Financial technology (FinTech) has drawn much attention among investors and companies. While conventional stock analysis in FinTech targets at predicting stock prices, less effort is made for profitable stock recommendation. Besides, in existing approaches on modeling time series of stock prices, the relationships among stocks and sectors (i.e., categories of stocks) are either neglected or pre-defined. Ignoring stock relationships will miss the information shared between stocks while using pre-defined relationships cannot depict the latent interactions or influence of stock prices between stocks. In this work, we aim at recommending the top-K profitable stocks in terms of return ratio using time series of stock prices and sector information. We propose a novel deep learning-based model, Financial Graph Attention networks (FinGAT), to tackle the task under the setting that no pre-defined relationships between stocks are given. The idea of FinGAT is three-fold. First, we devise a hierarchical learning component to learn short-term and long-term sequential patterns from stock time series. Second, a fully-connected graph between stocks and a fully-connected graph between sectors are constructed, along with graph attention networks, to learn the latent interactions among stocks and sectors. Third, a multi-task objective is devised to jointly recommend the profitable stocks and predict the stock movement. Experiments conducted on Taiwan Stock, S&P 500, and NASDAQ datasets exhibit remarkable recommendation performance of our FinGAT, comparing to state-of-the-art methods. © 1989-2012 IEEE.

FA-FENet: A Feature Attention Front-End network Based on a Lightweight CNN Architecture for Recognizing Abnormal Underwater Illegal Fishing Behavior

In the past decade, studies on illegal fishing have neglected to consider illegal underwater fishing. Traditionally, supervisor-based methods have been used to manually interpret underwater behavior;however, existing artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) methods are not applicable to illegal underwater fishing. Therefore, in this study, we used a computer vision AI method to perform the challenging task of illegal underwater fishing image recognition. Illegal underwater fishing images have unclear features and high feature similarity. In this study, we define normal underwater travel as wearing diving clothing. Abnormal underwater behavior includes underwater personnel with illegal fishing equipment. Herein, we propose a feature attention front-end network (FA-FENet), a novel end-to-end convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture that differs from previous methods in that it allows flexible integration with various backbone networks. The front end of the backbone network can be directly replaced to improve the learning efficiency and performance of the proposed network. The convolutional layers in our proposed FA-FENet include dilated convolutions, group convolutions, padded convolutions, pooling layers, and activation functions. We also comprehensively review the performance of the proposed FA-FENet. A series of ablation studies demonstrate that the proposed FA-FENet can be applied in shallow backbone networks. In addition, FA-FENet has potential in emerging networks with good performance in illegal underwater fishing identification tasks. Finally, we conducted experiments with an underwater fishing behavior dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms recently reported methods with attention mechanisms. Specifically, FA-FENet-RegNet achieves an accuracy of 88.81%, FA-FENet-ResNet18 reaches 78.32%, and FA-FENet-ShuffleNetV2 attains 80.41%. © 2013 IEEE.

Innovative safety in the workplace is vital as the high safety risks associated with electrical engineering construction can lead to injuries or even fatalities. Using computer vision technology, we experimented with scenarios such as 'normal operations' and 'unexpected incidents' to enhance safety measures. We integrated an Internet of Things system into the setup, enabling the system to quickly detect and alert to unexpected events in real-time, thereby improving workplace safety. © 2024 IEEE.

A vast number of spatiotemporal datasets collected from a wide range of sources has motivated scientists to develop effective approaches to identify interesting patterns hidden in these datasets. In this respect, kernel density estimators, which belong to a class of non-parametric estimators in statistics, have been widely exploited in recent years. With this background, we have developed a novel kernel density estimator aiming to provide accurate analysis results. According to the evaluation with a real spatiotemporal dataset, which collected emergency medical service records in a county in the United States, the proposed kernel density estimator can approximate the probability density function significantly more accurately than a conventional kernel density estimator. Furthermore, we have exploited the proposed kernel density estimator to identify interesting patterns hidden in the real spatiotemporal dataset. © 2023 IEEE.

We developed an Authentic GeometryGo (AGG) app to help students application of geometry in authentic contexts through authentic measurements and peer assessments. The study included an experimental group (EG) using an AGG app and a control group (CG) using paper-based methods. The results showed that the EG outperformed the CG in terms of estimation. Measuring authentic geometry shapes using the app could foster students' estimation. Furthermore, meaningful peer assessments with visual representations in authentic contexts can facilitate the evaluation of peers' work and improve students' geometry understanding. Therefore, we encourage educators to use augmented reality with appropriate learning activities to sharpen students' measurement quality and visual representations by measuring real geometry shapes and applying mathematics knowledge in authentic contexts. © 2008-2011 IEEE.

Air pollution is a significant issue because it burdens human health and the environment. Particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or smaller (PM2.5) can penetrate the lungs and enter the bloodstream, seriously affecting the cardiovascular system, causing strokes, and impacting the respiratory system. Modern individuals spend 70% to 90% of their time indoors, making indoor air quality even more important than outdoor air quality. To estimate and predict indoor air quality, this study utilizes low-cost, self-assembled air boxes based on the Internet of Things to collect various air quality data. The collected data is then used in an indoor air quality forecasting system that combines Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and K-means clustering methods to compare the overall performance of the algorithms. The experimental results are analyzed and statistically described based on each model method prediction accuracy and clustering results. These methods are integrated to develop an indoor air quality forecasting system to help indoor populations prevent issues in advance or optimize energy usage. © 2024 IEEE.

The Internet of Things (IoTs) have become ubiquitous in all aspects of public needs today. The application of IoT technology is crucial for promoting energy-saving behavior. This paper presents a control system used for smart home devices based on hand gesture control and Android applications. The hardware design uses the ESP32 microcontroller, which has an in-chip Wi-Fi module, making it very suitable for creating IoT application systems. The software was designed using the Arduino IDE, and the application display design was developed using Kodular Creator, which is used to control the lamps and switches. The experiment results show that the electrical equipment can be activated using the Android application with gesture sensors by waving down, up, left, and right.
