Modern grid codes for interconnection of distributed energy resources have become more restrictive due to the massive integration of renewable energy sources. The interconnected renewable energy sources must operate accurately under normal and abnormal grid conditions in order to meet the grid requirements. In addition, the renewable energy systems require fault ride through capability in order to support the power grid under balanced or unbalanced low voltage grid faults. Therefore, the development of advanced current controller techniques is essential for the grid side power electronic converters in order to increase the renewable energy systems penetration and satisfy the grid codes. This paper proposes a current controller technique, which enables the appropriate operation of the grid side converter under unbalanced grid faults and harmonic distorted grid conditions. The proposed current controller is designed using multiple synchronous reference frames and can inject full positive or full negative sequence balanced sinusoidal currents under abnormal grid conditions. The accurate performance with robustness against unbalanced and harmonic distorted grid voltage indicates that the proposed current controller can be a useful tool in the fault ride through control of renewable energy systems.

Renewable energy sources require accurate and appropriate performance not only under normal grid operation but also under abnormal and faulty grid conditions according to the modern grid codes. This paper proposes a novel phase-locked loop algorithm (MSHDC-PLL), which can enable the fast and dynamic synchronization of the interconnected renewable energy system under unbalanced grid faults and under highly harmonic distorted voltage. The outstanding performance of the suggested PLL is achieved by implementing an innovative multi-sequence/harmonic decoupling cell in order to dynamically cancel out the oscillation of the positive sequence voltage vector, produced by the existence of unbalanced and harmonic distorted voltage. The fast and accurate response of the proposed PLL under abnormal grid conditions is very important for the appropriate synchronization and control of the interconnected renewable energy systems. Therefore, the performance of the new PLL can increase the quality of the injected power under abnormal conditions and in addition enable the renewable energy systems to provide the appropriate support to the grid under balanced and unbalanced grid faults.

Crowdsourcing is an emerging field that allows to tackle difficult problems by soliciting contributions from common people, rather than trained professionals. In the post-pc era, where smartphones dominate the personal computing market offering both constant mobility and large amounts of spatiotemporal sensory data, crowdsourcing is becoming increasingly popular. In this context, crowdsourcing stands as the only viable solution for collecting the large amount of location-related network data required to support location-based services, e.g., the signal strength radiomap of a fingerprinting localization system inside a multi-floor building. However, this benefit does not come for free, because crowdsourcing also poses new challenges in radiomap creation. We focus on the problem of device diversity that occurs frequently as the contributors usually carry heterogeneous mobile devices that report network measurements very differently. We demonstrate with simulations and experimental results that the traditional signal strength values from the surrounding network infrastructure are not suitable for crowdsourcing the radiomap. Moreover, we present an alternative approach, based on signal strength differences, that is far more robust to device variations and maintains the localization accuracy regardless of the number of contributing devices.

The measurement chain of the power system consists of various components introducing their associated uncertainty to the measured quantity. Although, it is important to identify and quantify the individual uncertainties of the measurement chain components and consequently the combined measurement chain uncertainty, it is nearly impossible to do this for all the components. In this paper a simplified measurement chain is considered that consists of the instrument transformer and the measurement device. The importance of considering the accuracy class of the instrument transformer is underlined by examining the effect of the instrument transformer accuracy class on the performance of a conventional and a hybrid state estimator performance. The two state estimators are used in the IEEE 118 bus system.

Network reduction techniques are attractive options for the analysis of large, complex power systems. In the process of network reduction, the original measurements usually get transformed along with the network parameters. It is therefore essential to take into account these transformations in applications such as state estimation. This paper presents a methodology for determining the relation between the measurements in the reduced system and the measurements in the original system. State estimation can then be carried out with the help of the transformed measurements. The developed method is applied on the IEEE 14 bus and IEEE 118 bus test systems.

One common problem associated with interconnected power systems is that the complete topology information and measurement data of the areas are not generally available or difficult to handle in real-time. This paper proposes a methodology to determine in real-time the reduced networks for the systems external to a given area. A sensitivity-based methodology is proposed to identify the nodes to be retained from the external areas. A network reduction methodology is then used to obtain the reduced equivalent for the entire system. A real-time network parameter adjustment algorithm is subsequently used to update the parameters of the reduced network under changes in operating condition. The proposed methods are validated with the help of the modified IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems.

Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) can be considered as complex dynamic systems where simulation modeling plays a crucial role in conducting research due to the difficulties in the realization of such a network, like high costs, risks and dangers. During the last decade, the results of VANET simulations were considered successful and acceptable however, most prior VANET simulators were based on non realistic mobility when describing node positions, distribution, frequency and movement, model paths, traffic signals etc. To deal with this challenge, we propose in this paper a Markov-History based modeling for realistic mobility of vehicles in VANETs. It starts with a geographic area digitization, followed by a vehicle positions initialization. The proposed model predicts directions of the vehicles using a Markov chain, as well as it predicts the vehicle velocities using a History-based sub-model. Moreover, the density of the network is updated according to the peak or off-peak hours. The emerged model can be used as mobility model to simulate VANET scenarios. To validate our proposal, a concrete mobility model has been designed using the proposed model that represents the downtown of Biskra City located in Algeria. The performances of the resulting network have been proved against the others obtained using Random Waypoint as a standard mobility model in terms of packet delivery ratio, network overhead, average end-to-end delay, and dropped packets.

This paper describes an intelligent Load Shedding (LS) mechanism that aspires to maintain the power system frequency within the regulated limits. First, the system’s parameters and time constants are identified through an online learning scheme using the actual measurement of the frequency. Then, the system is adaptively controlled based on these identified parameters, providing the amount of load that should be shed in a distributed and selective manner, in order to maintain the frequency stability of the system.
