Efficient traffic monitoring is playing a fundamental role in successfully tackling congestion in transportation networks. Congestion is strongly correlated with two measurable characteristics, the demand and the network density that impact the overall system behavior. At large, this system behaviour is characterized through the fundamental diagram of a road segment, a region or the network. In this paper we devise an innovative way to obtain the fundamental diagram through aerial footage obtained from drone platforms. The derived methodology consists of 3 phases: vehicle detection, vehicle tracking and traffic state estimation. We elaborate on the algorithms developed for each of the 3 phases and demonstrate the applicability of the results in a real-world setting. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a design methodology and some analytical results for distributed sensor fault detection and isolation (SFDI) of a class of nonlinear uncertain systems. During the initial stage of the nonlinear system operation, an adaptive approximation technique is used for learning online the modeling uncertainty. Then, local SFDI modules are designed using a dedicated nonlinear observer scheme. The fault isolation process is enhanced by deriving a combinatorial decision logic that integrates information from local SFDI modules. The performance of the proposed diagnostic scheme is analyzed in terms of its robustness with respect to the modeling uncertainties and conditions for ensuring fault detectability and isolability.

In this work, a node architecture based on wavelength selective switches with feedback loop attenuators that can be used as power equalizers, as well as an optimization algorithm are utilized in order to minimize the impact of physical layer jamming attacks in optical networks, while also minimizing the capital expenditure (Capex) of the network. Due to crosstalk-induced interactions among different connections, malicious high-power jamming signals can potentially spread widely in the network. Therefore, it is necessary to design an optical network in a way that the spread of an attack is minimized. This is achieved in this work by the design of appropriate power equalizer placement and attack-aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) algorithms in the form of Integer Linear Program (ILP) formulations. Performance results indicate that the proposed algorithms minimize the number of required equalizers for zero lightpath interactions without the need of additional wavelength resources.

Various factors which can occur in the power system can potentially have a negative impact on the damping performance of a wide area controller, in case they are not properly considered. Such factors might be the measurement uncertainty of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs), line parameters error, topology changes, and measurement delays of PMUs due to the communication network. Therefore, it is important to identify which factors are capable of affecting the wide area control (WAC) damping capabilities, in order to find ways to compensate their effect. In this paper, a case study is performed, where each factor is separately considered when a line is tripped and reclosed. The results indicate that data delays and topology changes are the factors which deteriorate the performance of the WAC. The simulations are based on the IEEE 39-bus dynamic test system.

Autonomy is a key feature for sustainable operation of the Internet of Things (IoT), since the large deployment scale of IoT devices makes management a very challenging task. For that reason, energy efficiency has become a primary design consideration in emerging and future IoT solutions. Already, beaconing and discontinuous transmission/reception is included in the upcoming IoT standards to enable devices to duty cycle between the active and sleep states in order to save energy. In many cases however, this periodic mode of operation results in unnecessary wake-ups that greatly reduce energy efficiency. Event-based communication greatly outperforms periodic triggering in efficiency, since wake-ups occur only when particular events take place. The networking aspects of this promising approach are investigated herein with devices exchanging events for monitoring and control purposes. Both centralized optimal and distributed heuristic strategies are formulated to intelligently adjust the number of wake-up events in order to maximize energy efficiency. Extensive simulations are conducted to analyze the performance of the proposed strategies.

The impact of blockages in the performance of next generation wireless networks has recently attracted a lot of attention. In this case, the existence of blockages can provide performance gains as the aggregate interference at a receiver is reduced. Furthermore, the employment of directional antennas at the network's nodes can further boost the performance through the power gains which antenna directionality produces. However, the impact of blockages on wireless power transfer has not been investigated equally. In this paper, we consider a bipolar ad-hoc network where the nodes employ directional antennas and have simultaneous wireless information and power transfer capabilities. We study the effects of blockages and directionality on the energy harvested by a receiver and show that the performance gains from the existence of blockages can be adjusted in order to increase the average harvested energy.

In the Internet of Things (IoT), smart devices embedded on a myriad of different objects will enable monitoring, control, and optimization with potentially transformative impact to the society. Evidently, operational efficiency has become an essential factor in the proliferation of these devices since higher efficiency will prolong device lifetime and achieve greater autonomy. In this work, the operational efficiency challenge is being looked at from the device point of view as well as from the networking side of things in which local and remote hosts need to exchange information for monitoring, control, and optimization functionalities. In the former case, a data-driven event triggering technique is developed to minimize the interaction between devices, while in the latter case an event-based communication strategy is investigated to minimize the overall energy consumption of the network. Both experimental results and results for a real-world application are presented to demonstrate the many-fold operational efficiency gains that can be realized using the proposed solution.

The ability to accurately estimate arrival times of mass transit vehicles is extremely important to public transportation systems since it governs the perceived quality of experience and influences its *** majority of existing solutions are primarily concerned with the specific problem at hand and overlook the communication overhead associated when implementing such a system in *** latter issue is addressed in this work with the aim of achieving good estimates with minimal *** event-based monitoring process is designed for that purpose which is tested in a real-world bus service running along a particular route of the public transport network in Nicosia,*** proposed solution significantly reduces the message exchanges needed to maintain accurate location estimates of busses with minimal computation requirements.

Big cities have to deal with the movement of thousands of vehicles that traverse through their streets every day. As traffic demand increase undesirable problems emerge including traffic congestion, which is becoming more serious day after day. Traffic congestion is an inherently difficult concept resulting to incrementally higher delays, pollution emissions, fuel waste and non-predictable traveling times. This work introduce a novel architecture that aims to control and manage the utilization of road transport networks aspire to prevent traffic congestion. Inspired by perimeter control approaches this architecture divides an urban area spatially and temporally into smaller regions. The capacity of each road segment within these regions is reserved by users on demand. A Road Site Unit (RSU) is responsible to schedule and manage reservations in such a way that vehicles traverse each region only through congestion free routes. The route reservation problem that suffices is formally derived using mathematical formulations and a real-time algorithm is developed to solve this problem. Preliminary simulation results demonstrate that the proposed architecture offers significant performance improvements in vehicle mobility compared to the current state of operation.

This work proposes a methodology to identify the parameters of a synchronous machine based on the finite element method (FEM). Several offline real-time tests to identify SM parameters are reproduced on a digital platform of a FEM based solver. The proposed methodology is divided into three basic steps: creation of the basic physical geometry of the synchronous machine, development and execution of parameter estimation tests on the digital platform, and post-processing to calculate the parameters from the test results. Simulations are shown for a salient-pole synchronous machine. The proposed method is envisioned to replace the real-time offline tests.
