Showing automatically generated students' conceptual models to students and teachers

A student conceptual model can be defined as a set of interconnected concepts associated with an estimation value that indicates how well these concepts are used by the students. It can model just one student or a group of students, and can be represented as a concept map, conceptual diagram or one of several other knowledge representation formats. Some e-assessment systems that automatically evaluate free-text students' answers have recently been extended to include the possibility of automatically generating students' conceptual models. The research reported in this paper focuses on studying the effects of showing these automatically generated models to students and teachers. The e-assessment system used was the Will Tools suite with a group of Engineering students during a semester at the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid. © 2010 - IOS Press and the authors.

In this paper a new tool which allows flexible querying on multidimensional data bases is presented. Linguistic F-Cube Factory is based on the use of natural language when querying multidimensional data cubes to obtain linguistic results. Natural language is one of the best ways of presenting results to human users as it is their inherent way of communication. Data warehouses take advantage of the multidimensional data model in order to store big amounts of data that users can manage and query by means of OLAP operations. They are a context where the development of a linguistic querying tool is of special interest. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Mediators used to be developed as monolithic systems that envelop the data source's information, such as its semantics and location. Furthermore, its architecture based on wrappers involves a high degree of coupling among the mediator's components. This coupling does not allow sharing services with other organizations or the dynamic integration of new data sources. We have proposed an architecture for conceptual mediation, which allow users to make more expressive queries and infer information from the ontology-explicit knowledge, enabling them to solve queries that a traditional mediator could not evaluate. This architecture also provides a way to achieve not only dynamic integration, but also interoperability between users/applications in the Semantic Web context by means of Semantic Fields. The latter is the focus of this paper. © Springer-Verlag 2004.

This paper presents a description of seven systems, which use database technology to both represent knowledge persistently and make scalable queries on it, in the Semantic Web context. From the study of these systems we can deduce that a lot of work regarding massive storage of knowledge has already been carried out. We can observe an evolution from RDF to OWL in most up-to-date systems. The analyzed approaches carry out a mapping between the (structure of the) ontology and the data model of the persistence management system. Nevertheless, there is still considerable work to be done regarding efficient disk oriented Abox (ontology instances) querying and reasoning. We think that due to the Semantic Web features many problems related to assertional reasoning should be addressed. We also believe that the physical design of the knowledge base is a very important task, which includes the development of both specific storage structures and indexes for knowledge storage and retrieval.

Between 80% and 90% of all Chinese words have long and short form such as / (lao-hu/hu, tiger) (Duanmu, 2013). Consequently, the choice between long and short forms is a key problem for lexical choice across NLP and NLG in Chinese. Following on from earlier work on abbreviations in English (Mahowald et al., 2013), we bring a probabilistic perspective to word length choice, using both a behavioural and a corpus-based approach. Thus, we hypothesise that, in Chinese, short forms are likelier in supportive than in neutral contexts. Our corpus and behavioral study supported this hypothesis, but a closer analysis revealed striking differences between different types of Chinese words. © 2019 Association for Computational Linguistics

The increasing global demand for food and nutrition security has raised the need to automate processes in modern farming. As such, a promising way to automate those processes is by using smart agriculture applications (SAAs). Different studies in the literature classify these applications based on agricultural themes, agricultural domains, and farming scenarios. However, this classification is not sufficient for researchers and industry to gain deeper insights on software engineering issues pertaining to SAAs. In this survey, we explore SAAs and further classify them based on architectural models, supported software engineering issues, and target mobile platforms. The survey results show that SAAs in general (1) follow different architectural models, (2) are targeted for different mobile platforms, and (3) satisfy different software engineering issues. Most importantly, the key findings from this study reveal that SAAs can fail to meet their intended purpose if developers ignore key software engineering issues. These findings can be used as a starting point for researchers and industry to implement smart agriculture related mobile applications. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The use of computational techniques in the processing of histopathological images allows the study of the structural organization of tissues and their pathological changes. The overall objective of this work includes the proposal, the implementation and the evaluation of a methodology for the analysis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) from histopathological images. For this pourpose, a pipeline of morphological operators were implemented for the segmentation of cell nuclei and the Delaunay Triangulation were used in order to represent the tissue architecture. Also, clustering algorithms and graph morphology were used to automatically obtain the boundary between the histological layers of the epithelial tissue. Similarity criteria and adjacency relations between the triangles of the network were explored. The proposed method was evaluated concerning the detection of the presence of lesions in the tissue as well as the their malignancy grading. © 2012 IEEE.

The exponential growth in the volume of accessible information on the Web has led to the development of distributed systems, which share knowledge by making use of conceptualizations of specific domains generally defined by means of ontologies. Multiple conceptualizations may describe similar domains using different or overlapped terminologies. These issues should be taken into account when a new system is designed. However, they are not usually considered, leading to greater development time and effort. In order to tackle these problems, we propose an engineering approach for the development of new database-based systems starting from domain ontologies.

Case-based learning (CBL) is a powerful pedagogical method of creating dialogue between theory and practice. CBL is particularly suited to executive learning as it instigates critical discussion and draws out relevant experiences. In this paper we used a real-world case to teach Information Security Management to students in Management Information Systems. The real-world case is described in a legal indictment (T-mobile USA Inc v. Huawei Device USA Inc. and Huawei Technologies Co. LTD) alleging theft of intellectual property (trade secrets) and breaches of contract concerning confidentiality and disclosure of sensitive information. The incident concerns a mobile phone testing robot (Tappy) developed by T-mobile USA to automate testing of mobile phones prior to launch. T-mobile alleges Huawei stole the technology by copying the robot’s specifications and stealing parts and software to develop its own testing robot. The incident scenario is interesting as it relates to a business asset that has both digital and physical components that has been compromised through an unconventional cyber-physical attack facilitated by insiders. The scenario sparked an interesting debate among students about the scope and definition of security incidents, the role and structure of the security unit, the utility of compliance-based approaches to security, and the inadequate use of threat intelligence in modern security strategies. © 2020 Ahmad, Maynard, Motahhir & Alshaikh.
