Although Smart Grid (SG) transformation brings many advantages to electric utilities, the longstanding challenge for all them is to supply electricity at the lowest cost. In addition, currently, the electric utilities must comply with new expectations for their operations, and address new challenges such as energy efficiency regulations and guidelines, possibility of economic recessions, volatility of fuel prices, new user profiles and demands of regulators. In order to meet all these emerging economic and regulatory realities, the electric utilities operating SGs must be able to determine and meet load, implement new technologies that can effect energy sales and interact with their customers for their purchases of electricity. In this respect, load forecasting which has traditionally been done mostly at city or country level can address such issues vital to the electric utilities. In this paper, an artificial neural network based energy consumption forecasting system is proposed and the efficiency of the proposed system is shown with the results of a set of simulation studies. The proposed system can provide valuable inputs to smart grid applications.

Nowadays, many considerable efforts are focused on the development of efficient and effective systems that increase the productivity of vehicles by controlling and manipulating the extraordinary states, such as sliding and spinning, during the operational time. Those states play a central role in the performance of the vehicles described as an interaction among different mechanical parts regarding their life-time, their wear and tear, as well as the maintenance costs. In addition, these states ultimately affect the safety of target system and its environment. Therefore, the necessity of avoiding, controlling, or manipulating these states to lower their effects into a tolerable level has become the major driver for conducting the current research work. In this paper, a prototype for safety-related platform for detecting and controlling railway vehicles states by means of vibration capture is presented. Additionally, test procedures in order to collect the vibration data related to each state are presented; these tests were performed under the supervision of an industrial partner. Moreover, the recognized initial patterns of the vibration signals related to the studied states are also introduced.

OMG's (Object Management Group) CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) is becoming a common platform for distributed computing environment. However, it is yet to address CSCW (computer Supported Collaborative Work) ftamework. This paper addresses the problem of building a framework for CSCW and proposes a new CSCW framework based on CORBA (CFC). CFC includes session, participant, mode, directory, stream, media and resource management. A desktop conference system and DSM-CC compliant video-on-demand system were built to demonstrate the usefulness of the framework. The performance of CORBA based CSCW applications is given. The strengths and weaknesses of using a CORBA framework are also discussed.

We integrate our primitives into a strongly typed object-oriented language through four mechnisms: (1) serialization, (2) multiple subtyping, (3)closures, and (4) deferred code evaluation.
