For Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to become more widely used in power systems and the future smart grids, ANN based algorithms must be capable of scaling up as they try to identify and control larger and larger parts of a power system. This paper goes through the process of scaling up an ANN based identifier as it is driven to identify increasingly larger portions of a power system. Distributed and centralized approaches for scaling up are taken and the pros and cons of each are presented. The New England/New York 68-bus power network is used as the test bed for the studies. It is shown that while a fully-connected (centralized) ANNs is capable of identification of the system with appropriate accuracy, the increase in the training times required to obtain an acceptable set of weights becomes prohibitive as the system size is increased.

Wireless networks are composed of many users that usually have conflicting objectives and generate interference to each other. The system design is typically formulated as the optimization of the weighted sum of the users' utility functions. In an attempt to obtain distributed algorithms in the case this sum is nonconvex, researchers have proposed pricing mechanisms which however are based on heuristics and valid only for a restricted class of problems. In this paper we propose a general framework for the distributed optimization of the nonconvex sum-utility function. Our main contributions are: i) the derivation for the first time of a general dynamic pricing mechanism, ii) a framework that can be easily particularized to well-known applications, giving rise to very efficient practical algorithms that outperform existing methods; and iii) the solution to the currently open problem of social optimization for MIMO multiuser systems.

Mobile Ad-hoc networks(MANET)s are self organizing networks which can form a communication network without any fixed infrastructure. The constant bit rate (CBR) traffic is very well known traffic model for mobile Ad-hoc network. CBR traffic generates data packets at a constant rate. This constant rate packet generational is good enough for text data packets. The multimedia applications generally generate packets which sometimes increase and might be sometimes followed by some idle period. CBR traffic model does not accommodate the specific features of multimedia data. The day by day increase of multimedia data prompts us to investigate some other traffic models which can accommodate the specific features of these data. One such traffic model is Exponential traffic model which is based on exponential distribution. The other model is Pareto traffic model based on Pareto distribution. In this article, we have tried to study the behavior of mobile Ad-hoc network routing protocols under Exponential and Pareto traffic sources for nodes moving with Reference Point Group Mobility model (RPGM). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to analyze the effect of traffic patterns with Reference Point Group Mobility (RPGM) model on mobile ad hoc network routing. We have chosen the Normalized routing load, Packet Delivery Fraction and throughput as our figures of merit to compare various protocols. We found high Normalized Routing Load for both Exponential and Pareto traffic compared to CBR traffic in both Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) and Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector protocol. The Packet Delivery Fraction is comparable in all types of traffic patterns and routing protocols. Throughput is high for Ad hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol across all traffic models.

Hitting the bowling pins exactly right to knock them down depends on the speed and direction of the bowling ball, which can be controlled by the proper swing form. If bowlers could check their swing form and identify their weak points, they would be able to improve their game. This paper describes the measurement and analysis of bowling form motion with the objective of identifying the features of the correct swing form. The measurement system is based on the use of 3D acceleration and gyro sensors with a wide dynamic range. The system is small and wireless so as not to constrain the subject's movements. We fixed it to the back of the subject's hand and his waist. The swing form and the actual speed of the swing were confirmed using a high-speed camera. We measured the swing form of an expert bowler and extracted information on the acceleration and angular velocity. Distinguishing features of the correct swing form were found by comparing the expert bowler with a novice bowler. The results showed the potential for quantitatively evaluating bowling skills.

This paper describes a novel method for detecting the presence of a person hiding in a car. One of the important strategies of homeland security is border control. In particular, strict and effective monitoring to control illegal immigration is a key strategy for maintaining public safety and a healthy local economy, and is essential for preventing the entry of terrorists. Here, we focused on developing a method to detect a person trying to illegally cross the border by hiding in a car. The proposed method is based on vibrations produced by human vital signs. The vibrations of the entire car are measured by piezoelectric ceramic sensors in a device placed under the wheel. Vibrations from wind and noise, etc. are removed using an appropriate filter. The outcome of an experiment using the proposed method is also presented in this paper.

The proposed method uses a bathtub pillow in which a low-frequency microphone is installed and a piezoelectric ceramic sensor placed under a duckboard.
