Teaching and learning software engineering have been recognized as important challenges for computerscience students and instructors. These challenges become stronger if we consider the distributed software development scenario that is gaining space everyday into the software industry. In order to help address this challenge, this article introduces a Collaborative and Distributed Learning Activity (CODILA). This collaborative activity helps students to reach the professional skills required in the professional work, and instructors to perform such transfer process. The paper also presents and discusses the obtained results from a particular CODILA, which address the challenge of designing a software architecture of a communication infrastructure in a distributed way. Six Latin American universities participated in the activity. The obtained results were satisfactory and indicate these types of experiences can be used to address the stated challenges.

In this paper, we propose a distributed resource allocation framework for cognitive radio networks by using the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) modulation. We jointly consider the constraints of quality of service (QoS), maximum power, and minimum rates in the network to obtain optimal available subcarrier sets and transmission power. The fairness of resource allocation is guaranteed by incorporating the probability that a subcarrier is occupied into the link capacity expression. We present a distributed subcarrier selection and power allocation algorithm and evaluate the algorithm through simulations. Our results confirm that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms in terms of throughput, the number of secondary links admitted, and the fairness of resource allocation.

The theory of a quantum-limited phase-matching effect in a Λ-type lasing system is studied in detail based on the quantum Langevin approach. Two quasimonochromatic fields are directly generated based on two lasing transitions. We find that the coherence between two lasers can well exceed the linewidth of either laser field. This result denotes that two field phases match each other although either laser field has a high phase fluctuation. Unlike the phase-matching effect based on atomic absorption, the final coherence between two laser fields here is not limited by saturation broadening, and the higher laser intensities lead to a higher coherence. Additionally, based on a linear stability analysis, we find that the instability of the field steady state can substantially restrict the occurrence of this phase-matching effect in the bad-cavity limit for a high pump rate. We also discuss the spectrum of amplitude fluctuations of output fields, and the result shows that the squeezing of amplitude fluctuations at low frequencies for a single field oscillating inside the cavity is damaged in the case of two fields oscillating.

We present a web-based environment along with an interactive interface for VLSI schematic design, simulation, and layout design. It consist of 10 experiments starting from transistor level design of inverter, then some basic gates such as NAND, NOR, XOR etc, finally design of D latch and flip flop. In each experiment student will learn how to design VLSI circuits both schematic and layout. It also consists of experiment components such as objective, introduction, quiz, and theory etc. which gives step by step explanation of each experiment. It is a powerful self learning supplement for the VLSI design course offered in undergraduate engineering program. Along with teaching schematics and layouts of circuits, this virtual lab also consists of some experiment explaining about SPICE coding, VHDL and Verilog coding. An interactive panel is given in which student will write programming codes, simulate and see real time waveforms. The web based schematic and layout editor is designed to maintain the commonality with EDA tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, HSpice Cosmos, Tanner tools etc.

Digital multimedia broadcasting services require resiliency against signal fading due to signal encounters with bad weather, terrain obstructions, such as tree, building, etc. There are several solutions that use peer-to-peer network to repair packet losses. But they have some shortcomings such as long lookup latency, control message overhead, flash crowd problem and low chunk availability. In this paper we propose a novel solution that considers load distribution in structured peer-to-peer networks and repairing packet losses in short lookup latency. Our proposed solution doesn't need to modify the codec technology for multimedia stream. Our proposed solution can achieve load evenly distributed, high chunk availability, short lookup latency and low control message overhead by using peer-to-peer network to repair packet losses in digital multimedia broadcasting systems.

The main objective of VLSI channel routing problem is to compute a feasible reduced area routing solution which reduces the height of the channel. A channel is a rectangular routing region with two open ends (left and right) and two sets of fixed terminals (top terminals and bottom terminals) are placed in the upper and lower sides of the channel. A net is a set of terminals that need to be electrically connected (usually using rectilinear wiring). Routing is a process to interconnect all nets within the channel considering all constraints (horizontal and vertical constraints) of that channel. The terminals along the left and right ends of the channel are not fixed, known as floating terminals. Generally, channel routing problem for area minimization is NP-complete. So developing a heuristic algorithm is really interesting. In this paper, we consider a general channel routing problem for channel instances with fixed and floating terminals, and develop an efficient graph based heuristic algorithm for reducing area in the reserved two-layer Manhattan channel routing model.

This paper explores the vision of a dual-use sensing/communication system based on Cognitive Radio Network (CRN). The motivation of the paper is to push the convergence of sensing and communication systems into a unified cognitive network. The concept design of this sensing/communication system is presented along with potential functions and challenges. A through tree target detection using real data collected by CRN testbed is demonstrated. The CRN testbed will be built based on Rice WARP nodes. To further exploit the advantages of dynamic spectrum access and frequency diversity, multi-frequency signal, which is similar to OFDM signal, are employed to for detection experiment in the harsh radio environment. The experiment results illustrate the vision of employing a CRN as wireless sensor network.

We present a novel lifelog system concept created to provide a human user with feedback on their conscious and unconscious emotional reactions and encourage the process of self-reflection by looking into an affective mirror. The emotion of the user is deduced from biometric data and enhanced by affective sound analysis and facial expression recognition of faces of the weares conversational partners. These high-level analyses also offer information about the social context of the user. All of the recorded data is processed using a novel modification of the spreading-activation theory which is used to model human-like associative thinking.

Over the last two decades, multi-scroll chaos generation has seen promising advances and becomes an active research field. This paper initiates a novel approach to design various grid multi-wing butterfly chaotic attractors from piecewise Lü system based on switching control and heteroclinic orbit. It should be especially pointed out that these generating multi-wing chaotic attractors are chaotic in the sense of Smale horseshoe from Shilnikov theorem. Moreover, there are some potential engineering applications in the future because of the simplicity of the proposed design approach.
