With the United States national goal and incentive program to transition from paper to electronic health records (EHRs), healthcare organizations are increasingly implementing EHRs and other related health information technology (IT). However, in institutions which have long adopted these computerized systems, such as the Veterans Health Administration, healthcare workers continue to rely on paper to complete their work. Furthermore, insufficient EHR design also results in computer-based workarounds. Using direct observation with opportunistic interviewing, we investigated the use of paper-and computer-based workarounds to the EHR with a multi-site study of 54 healthcare workers, including primary care providers, nurses, and other healthcare staff. Our analysis revealed several paper-and computer-based workarounds to the VA's EHR. These workarounds, including clinician-designed information tools, provide evidence for how to enhance the design of the EHR to better support the needs of clinicians.

This paper presents an acoustical signal tracking experiment by swarm mobile robots. Biological swarm is a fascinating behavior of nature which was inspired from social insects' behavior. A mobile robot that is designed as a swarm robotic platform was employed for implementing voice exploration behavior. An additional module was developed to connect to robots for processing given voice signals using the proportional signal strength approach that estimates orientation of sound source using fuzzy logic approach. The voice processor module utilizes four condenser microphones with around -47db sensitivity which are placed in different directions of the circuit board for capturing surrounding sound signals. Captured samples by microphones are processed to estimate the relative positions of the sound source in the robotic environment. After estimating the position of the signal's source, all participants move towards similar to the insects' colony. The participant robots have an individual task for the estimation of source location from captured samples. Moreover, according to the swarm definition, an additional cooperation between swarm participants is required to achieve a correct colony of robots. Obtained results illustrate the feasibility of the proposed technique and hardware interface for sound signals acquisition with swarm robots. © 2010 IEEE.

Mobile applications are becoming more and more powerful yet also more complex. While mobile application users expect the application to be reliable and secure, the complexity of the mobile application makes it prone to have faults. Mobile application engineers and testers use testing technique to ensure the quality of mobile application. However, the testing of mobile application is time-consuming and hard to automate. In this paper, we model the mobile application from a black box view and propose a distance metric for the test cases of mobile software. We further proposed an ART test case generation technique for mobile application. Our experiment shows our ART tool can both reduce the number of test cases and the time needed to expose first fault when compared with random technique. © 2010 IEEE.

Many applications present data sets that are essentially large tables. Certain features of such table views have become commonplace, and a comprehensive set of interactions with tables could easily be available in a platform-independent way in the form of a widget. Table widgets are not a new concept, but previous examples have some shortcomings in functionality and nonfunctional aspects. They are not explicitly based on a platform-independent set of functional requirements and do not take into account the types of data presented. Those table widgets that are part of the GUI framework do not take into account nonfunctional requirements such as the size of the data set. This paper presents the requirements for a universal table widget, and describes a prototype implementation that fulfills many of these requirements. Its features include the ability to handle large data sets, heterogeneous row and column sizes and heterogeneous content types. © 2010 ACM.

Feature selection has become very vital aspect in musical instruments sounds for handling the problem of 'curse of dimensionality'. Various feature selection techniques have been applied in this domain focusing on Western musical instruments sounds. However, study on feature selection using rough sets of non-Western musical instruments sounds including Malay Traditional musical instruments is inadequate and still needs an intensive research. Thus, in this paper, an alternative feature selection technique using rough set theory based on Maximum Degree of dependency of Attributes (MDA) technique for Traditional Malay musical instruments sounds is proposed. The modeling process comprises eight phases: data acquisition, sound editing, data representation, feature extraction, data discretization, data cleansing, feature selection using proposed technique and feature validation via classification. The results show that the performance of the best 17 selected features is increase up to 99.82% and 98.03% with 1-NN and PART classifiers respectively. © Springer-Verlag (2010).

The content distribution services via the Internet have become popular. However, these services have some problems that prevent users from getting a file efficiently and there still remains much room for improving the performance. In this paper, we focus on representative hybrid P2P network application, BitTorrent, and try to resolve these problems. Because the content files are divided into pieces and finely handled at the piece level, BitTorrent allows users to exchange data efficiently in massively parallel transmission manner. However, there exist some problems with BitTorrent two of which are mainly focused on this paper. The first problem is that BitTorrent has a possibility to lack the nodes who has a entire file. The second one is that some nodes can't receive data for some unfair reason because of the limit on connected nodes. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the method for placing transfer support nodes by service providers to allow users to get contents efficiently and evaluates the proposed method by using computer simulation. © 2010 IEEE.

We discuss the development of a miniature near-infrared point spectrometer, operating in the 1.7-4 mm region, based on acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) technology. This instrument may be used to screen and corroborate analyses of samples containing organic biomarkers or mineralogical signatures suggestive of extant or extinct organic material collected in situ from planetary surfaces. The AOTF point spectrometer will be paired with a laser desorption time-of-flight (LDTOF) mass spectrometer and will prescreen samples for evidence of volatile or refractory organics before the laser desorption step and subsequent mass spectrometer measurement. 1 2 We describe the prototype AOTF point spectrometer instrument and present laboratory analysis of geological samples of known astrobiological importance. An initial mineral and rock sample suite of planetary relevance was used in the laboratory for baseline testing. To this, we will add a complement of astrobiologically relevant biosignatures from a variety of well-characterized geomicrobial study sites. We also describe LDTOF analysis of kaolinite and serpentine specimens, which are both highly relevant to the Martian surface mineralogy and the aqueous history of the planet. The AOTF-LDTOF instrument pairing offers the powerful advantage of cross-checked chemical analyses of individual samples, which can reduce chemical and biological interpretation ambiguities.

Rotor angle of the machine may accelerate or decelerate due to transient instability depending on the mechanical power or the turbine power, P m and electrical power, P e . As such, injecting an appropriate mechanical input power in accordance to the electrical power demand and losses at a critical time and condition will avoid major supply interruption due to unnecessary tripping of circuit breaker during transient instability. This paper presents Evolutionary Programming (EP) approach to optimize the mechanical input power in order to prevent transient instability in the system. The optimization is based on Area-based COI-referred Transient Stability Indexes: COI Angle and COI Speed, for a three area system with six generators. Results obtained from the experiment revealed that the EP approach is able to give an optimal solution.

Minimization of total （vertical） wire length is one of the most important problems in laying out blocks in VLSI physical design. Minimization of wire length not only reduces the cost of physical wiring required, but also reduces the electrical hazards of having long wires in the interconnection, power consumption, and signal propagation delays. Since the problem of computing minimum wire length routing solutions in no-dogleg, two-layer channel routing is NP-hard, it is interesting to develop heuristic algorithms that compute routing solutions of as low total （vertical） wire length as possible. In this paper we develop an efficient heuristic algorithm for appreciably reducing the total wire length in the reserved two-layer no-dogleg Manhattan channel routing model. Experimental results obtained are greatly encouraging.

Due to advancements in lighting technologies new opportunities for application emerge. In this paper an interdisciplinary study towards the development of adaptive lighting environments is presented. An implementation of an adaptive lighting environment is made in the domain of office work. For evaluation, experts from the domains of human-system interaction, activity and context recognition, and system architecture design are interviewed. Contributions are made with regard to the implementation of the adaptive lighting in office environments and an evaluation method that is in line with the interdisciplinary approach. From the evaluation method insights in the fields of human-computer interaction, activity and context recognition and system architecture and (wireless) networking and in topics that span across these fields are gained.
