In this paper, we proposed an automatic lung segmentation method. We designed a ROI based method to estimate a proper initial lung boundary for ASM deformation by deriving the translation and the scaling parameters from the lung ROI. An adaptive ASM, using k-means clustering and silhouette-based cluster validation technique, was proposed to adapt to the lung shape change so that the lung shape variation among people can be overwhelmed. The experiments indicated that the segmentation performance of the adaptive ASM is superior to the traditional ASM approaches.

In a large mission critical wireless ad hoc network, heterogeneous nodes with different capabilities and nodes from different organizations may be deployed within the same geographical area. This is typical for many mission critical applications such as military networks. For such applications, on one hand, a node from one organization may collaborate with the nodes from a different organization for better survivability and efficiency. On the other hand, it is important to keep cross-organization data transfer at the lowest possible level for minimal disruption of the traffic within each organization and for security reasons. We propose a novel routing metric that both maximizes the benefits from the collaboration of heterogeneous nodes and takes the organizational constraints into account. Furthermore, we propose a novel routing protocol that may accommodate this new organization-aware metric, while backward compatible with the most popular routing protocols for general MANET, such as the optimized link state routing protocol (OLSR). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method provides the much needed survivability and efficiency in battlefield environment while keeping the cross-organization data transfer at a low level.

In this paper, we propose a multiple objective GA scheme to promote watermarking robustness as well as imperceptibility. In contrast with the existing GA based approaches utilizing single objective optimization, we treat the image watermarking as a multiple objective optimization problem. Based on this new perspective, the inherent conflict existing in image watermarking can be objectively handled. The experimental study shows that our method indeed outperform the conventional GA-based approach in both robustness and imperceptibility.

Paper deals with industrial realization of feedback control of demanding applications on theirs control, control algorithms and visualization together with real time control from MATLAB/Simulink Environment. Paper shows direct connection and implementation way of designed control schemas of prepared applications to an industrial WinPLC. Described is a way to produce a permanent solution in control applications that are fully prepared, designed and implemented directly from MATLAB/Simulink to the target control platform. As a part, the mentioned solution is using a multiplatform control system REX as a bridge between MATLAB and target platforms. These methods allow minimizing costs of development of control of applications, because it produces target permanent realizations in comparison to classical development methods that usually need expensive real time measurement cards and produce only one purpose development solution.

The task of motion planning for robotic manipulators means to drive an end-effector between designated points in the work area while obstacles are not hit. This contribution investigates the case of dynamic obstacles (like human operators) and the consideration of a performance criterion to be maximized for the motion. The proposed approach maps the dynamics of the manipulator and the obstacles into the C times T-space (spanned by the configuration C and the time T). Within this space, an (sub-)optimal sequence of configurations in the collision-free subspace is determined by mixed-integer linear programming. To achieve sufficient computational efficiency, the optimization task is approached by employing the principles of model predictive control. The paper describes the approach based on the example of a two-link robot interacting with a human operator.

For concurrent consideration of reliability and safety of manufacturing systems on the one hand, and flexibility and performance on the other, a specialized control architecture was proposed recently. It consists of a strategic controller for online computing (sub-)optimal control strategies under consideration of dynamic models, safety specifications, and learned knowledge. The second building block is an operational controller for providing certified safety when dealing with behaviors that are not completely predictable, for instance in case of faults. This paper extends the architecture by a specific technique for the strategic controller: For the case of an intelligent manufacturing system which reacts adaptively to a human operator, control trajectories for a robot arm are computed online such that collision with the operator is excluded. The computation is based on solving a mixed-integer programming problem that takes a dynamic safety area around the operator into account as constraint.

In recent years, voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has gained much attention in wireless local area networks (WLANs). Although IEEE 802.11e has been standardized to provide voice traffic with quality of service (QoS) support, the voice quality will still be severely degraded with a large amount of best-effort traffic generated by distributed coordination function (DCF) or enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) stations. In this paper, we propose a novel ACK mechanism called delay-based ACK (DB-ACK) scheme to protect voice traffic from legacy DCF users and AC_BE traffic by using adaptive DIFS and AIFS values at DCF and EDCA stations respectively in an 802.11e infrastructure network. We evaluate the performance of the DB-ACK scheme through extensive simulations. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can well support the stringent QoS requirements for voice traffic while maintaining acceptable throughput for best-effort traffic.

Recent advances in wireless technology, sensors and portable devices offer interesting opportunities to enable ubiquitous assistance to individuals in need of prompt help. Providing healthcare services to mobile users, such as, patients, elders, or potential drug abusers, is a rather challenging task. Novel middleware-level supports are required to integrate sensor infrastructures capable of detecting changes in the monitored subjects' health conditions and of alerting medical personnel, and the victim's relatives and friends in case of emergency situations. Along this line, the paper envisions a context-aware middleware-level solution dubbed Pervasive Environment for Affective Healthcare (PEACH). PEACH integrates together various sensors in a Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) to detect alterations of monitored subjects' affective and physical conditions, aggregate the sensed information, and also detect potentially dangerous situations for the monitored subject. Finally, PEACH aims at providing outdoor assistance to the victim/patient by quickly promoting the formation of ad hoc rescue groups comprising nearby volunteers. Through encouraging results obtained from both simulations and a practical drug-rehabilitation application testbed, the effectiveness of the envisioned PEACH framework is verified.

Advanced development of a system operating between humans and computers (human friendly system) is more important than the evolution of computer hardware. The salient obstacle to its progress is "How do we acquire and process Kansei? How do we produce a user model and a network service using Kansei?" For preliminary investigation, we constructed fatigue expression models based on a Bayesian network (BN) using psychological and physiological data. We proposed a convergent inference system framework using multiple BNs based on ontology and agent technology. Then we described a Kansei engineering framework for Kansei information processing in a ubiquitous home and smart home. As described herein, we design new ontological categories to construct the service model using Kansei information. Results show that the Kansei modeling using our framework addresses the inference procedure and the inference result of Kansei information as an instance of ontology.

As the feature size of VLSI circuits scales down and clock rates increases, circuit performance is becoming more sensitive to process variations. This paper proposes an algorithm of symmetrical buffer placement in symmetrical clock trees to achieve zero-skew in theory, as well as robust low skew under process or environment variations. With the completely symmetrical structure, we can eliminate many factors of clock skew such as model inaccuracy, environment temperature and intra-die process variations. We devise a new dynamic programming scheme to handle buffer placement and wire sizing under the constraint of symmetry. By classifying the wires by tree levels and defining the level-dependent blockages, the potential candidate points in the gaps of circuit blocks can be fully explored. The algorithm is efficient for minimizing source-sink delay as well as other linear cost functions. Experiments show that our method helps to obtain a balanced design of clock tree with low delay, skew and power.
