MIMO (multiple input multiple output) and OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) bringing along a number of pros; a combination of both stands a good possibility of being the next-generation (4th generation) of mobile wireless systems. The technology however imposes a challenge that is the increased complexity of channel equalization. Wireless channels are multipath fading channels, causing deformation in the signal. To remove the effect (imposed by channel) from received signal, the receiver needs to have knowledge of CIR (Channel impulse response) that is usually provided by a separate channel estimator. This paper is aimed at exploring the use of Neural Network (NN) as a tool for MIMO-OFDM channel estimation and compensation. The research attempts to gauges the usefulness of proposed system by analyzing different algorithms to train NN. Further to ascertain the performance of the proposed technique; length of the known training sequence has been varied over a reasonable range and observations are made. Finally, the results obtained by using different algorithms for training NN have been compared with each-other and against the traditional least squares channel estimator, which along with observations/comments form part of the paper.

This study presents a robust proportional integral derivative (RPID) control system for chaotic systems. This RPID control system comprises a self-tuning PID (SPID) controller and a robust controller. The gradient descent method and H∞ control technique are utilized to derive theon-line tuning laws of SPID controller and the robust controller, so that the robust tracking performance of the system can be yielded. In order to achieve the best solution for SPID controller, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is adopted to select the optimal learning rates of SPID controller. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed control system can achieve favorable tracking performance.

This paper presents a comprehensive analytical approach to maintain queuing delay in a router at a required level through closed-loop feedback control under aggregated traffic flows from various traffic classes. The approach is able to bound average queuing delay but still achieve a high system utilization by regulating traffic arrival rate implicitly through a movable queuing threshold. The queuing threshold is adjusted dynamically through feedback of average queuing delay measurement. Consequently, packets are dropped dynamically with respect to the changes of queuing threshold and the packets loss event served as an implicit congestion indicator. Three major contributions are given in this paper: (1) a discrete time queuing model is developed to derive the mapping table of average queuing delay and queuing threshold; (2) a traffic model that models LRD aggregated Internet traffic through superposing of N MMBP-2 arrival processes; (3) a closed-loop feedback control to control queuing delay at its target level based on expected system utilization. Matlab is used to perform queuing analysis and simulation. Statistical evaluation is performed to show the efficiency and accuracy of the analytical and simulation results.

For large and complex composite Web services which are composed by BPEL and a set of WSDL and XSD documents, we urgently need the aid of the tools in designing and selecting test cases. However, most of mature testing tools which generate test data with the information of WSDL are used for single service while the research for composition remains in the realm of theory. So we apply the theory of data-flow testing and try to develop a testing tool for Web services composition which can automatically detects harmful data-flow anomalies and generate test paths according to all kinds of data flow coverage criteria.

The Korean energy management system (K-EMS) development project, which includes the development of the dispatcher training simulator (DTS), has been underway since 2005. The DTS provides a realistic environment for system dispatchers to practice operating tasks and experience emergency operating situations. In order to provide a realistic environment, the DTS includes many dynamic models of power plants, such as fossil fuel plant and hydro plants. In this paper, the fossil fuel power plant model for the DTS in K-EMS is introduced and verified through actual measurement data.

The successful operation of CDMA systems depend on the use of power control. This is needed to address the "near far" effect and to mitigate the effects of fading. Other factors also impact on the achievable performance of the power control loop including the fact that only the sign of the power increments are transmitted. The paper presents new methods and results to improve control with respect to the latter strongly non-linear effect. An adaptive control architecture, having three degrees of freedom, is therefore proposed for inner loop power control. The three degrees of freedom are used to address errors resulting from (i) channel and interference variations, (ii) quantization of the power increments and (iii) saturation of the power increments. Simulations show that the proposed controller outperforms other related schemes. A major reason for this is the ability of the three degree of freedom controller to reduce the variation of the control signal to be quantized.

The 3S (Shrinking-Search-Space) multi-thresholding method which have been used for segmentation of medical images according to their intensities, now have been implemented and compared with FCM method in terms of segmentation quality and segmentation time as a benchmark in thresholding. The results show that 3S method produced almost the same segmentation quality or in some occasions better quality than FCM, and the computation time of 3S method is much lower than FCM. This is another superiority of this method with respect to others. Also, the performance of C-means has been compared with two other methods. This comparison shows that, C-means is not a reliable clustering algorithm and it needs several run to give us a reliable result.

Here we consider string matching problems that arise naturally in applications to music retrieval. The δ-Matching problem calculates, for a given text T1n and a pattern P1m on an alphabet of integers, the list of all indices l- {1 i ≤ n-m+1 : max m=1 {Pj-Ti+j-≤δ}. The υ-Matching problem computes, for given T and P, the list of all indices T = {lin-m +l:σmj=1)Pj- Ti+jυ}- In this paper, we extend the current result on the different matching problems to handle the presence of "don't core" symbols. We present efficient algorithms that calculate I, I, and Iγ= I∩I for pattern P with occurrences of "don't cares".

This paper describes about an automated microscopic imaging system for supporting asbestos qualitative analysis. By JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards), the dispersion staining method is designated as a visual qualitative analysis for asbestos in the construction materials. In the analysis process using the microscope, the expert monitors the particles including asbestos fibers and count them. For supporting such observation process, we developed an automated microscopic image collecting system. It realizes to take the images of the target area and store them to the database automatically. In this paper, we introduce and report the prototype system and its performance.

For a species to develop in nature basically two things are needed: An enabling technology and a "niche". In spacecraft design the story is the same. Both a suitable technology and a niche application need to be there before a new generation of spacecraft can be developed. In the last century two technologies have emerged which had and still have a huge impact on the development of technical systems: Micro-Electronics (ME) and Micro-systems Technology (MST). Many different terrestrial systems have changed dramatically since the introduction of ME and MST and many new systems have emerged. In the same period many nano-satellites have been built and launched and shown that they can perform in space. Still it is not clear what the specific role of these small satellites will be. Where will they go? What will they do?.
