A micro diaphragm-based Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometric (EFPI) pressure sensor with high temperature immunity is described. The EFPI pressure sensor consists of a single mode silica glass optical fiber, a glass capillary and a glass diaphragm, which are fused together using a conventional fusion splicer. This eliminates the need for the use of other joining materials, e.g. epoxy, allows any thermal mismatch between different materials to be almost completely eliminated and hence the sensor is capable of high temperature operation. In addition, the EFPI pressure sensor is cheap and relatively easy to produce as only splicing, polishing and wet etching are necessary. Moreover, due to its small size, a frequency response of several MHz can be achieved.

Accelerating micro-architecture simulation is becoming increasingly urgent as the complexity of workload and simulated processor increases. This paper presents a novel two-stage sampling (TSS) scheme to accelerate the sampling-based simulation. It firstly selects some large samples from a dynamic instruction stream as candidates of detail simulation and then samples some small groups from each selected first stage sample to do detail simulation. Since the distribution of standard deviation of cycle per instruction (CPI) is insensitive to microarchitecture, TSS could be used to speedup design space exploration by splitting the sampling process into two stages, which is able to remove redundant instruction samples from detail simulation when the program is in stable program phase (standard deviation of CPI is near zero). It also adopts systematic sampling to accelerate the functional warm-up in sampling simulation. Experimental results show that, by combining these two techniques, TSS achieves an average and maximum speedup of 1.3 and 2.29 over SMARTS, with the average CPI relative error is less than 3%. TSS could significantly accelerate the time consuming iterative early design evaluation process.

During gene expression, transcription factors are unable to bind to a transcription binding site (TFBS) involved in regulation if DNA methylation has occurred at the TFBS. Methyl-CpG-binding proteins may also occupy the TFBS and prevent the functioning of a transcription factor. Thus, the methylation status of CpG sites is an important issue when trying to understand gene regulation and shows strong correlation with the TFBS involved. In addition, CpG islands would seem to undergo cell-specific and tissue-specific methylation. Such differential methylation is presented at numerous genetic loci that are essential for development. Current DNA methylation site prediction tools need to be improved so that they include TFBS features and have greater accuracy in terms of the DNA region that is involved in methylation. We developed models that compare the differences across these regions and tissues. The TFBSs, DNA properties and DNA distribution were used as features for this classification. From the results, we found some TFBSs that were able to discriminate whether a sequence was methylated or not. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy estimated using 10-fold cross validation were 90.8%, 80.54%, and 86.07%, respectively. Thus, for these four regions and twelve tissues, the performance levels (ACC) were all greater than 80%. We propose that the differential features or methylations vary between the different regions because the features common to each DNA region made up only 50% of the top 70 features. Entering the 21st century, the aging process and increasing chronic diseases in Taiwan society have become more prevalent. To deal with the problem, we develop a ubiquitous healthcare (u-Health) system platform that integrates wireless telecommunication, sensor network, and information technology to take care of patients having chronic diseases. The u-Health system provides not only telecare at home setting, but also a health community network which can further integrate medical care and life care and emphasize on patent humanity and dignity. For this purpose, a holistic u-Health system focusing on the physiological, psychosocial, arts, recreational, and even spiritual aspects of patients was implemented for people living in the community. In this study, we applied our community based u-Health system to the current and retired employees of National Taiwan University (NTU) who had at least one of the following chronic diseases: hypertension, diabetes mellitus and obesity, and required long term follow up and treatment. A community medical group (CMG) which is formed with family doctors from the Family Medicine department of NTU Hospital, the Yung-Ho Branch of Cardinal Tien Hospital, NTU Health Center, and several other local clinics in Taipei City was in charge of the medical care along with a dedicated case managing nurse for the medical care at outpatient clinics, home telecare and 24-hour health consultation. Using this integrated community-based system is expected to provide a comprehensive and ubiquitous healthcare and eventually improve the quality of care by increasing compliance and reducing the complications of chronic diseases.

Face recognition (FR) for emerging applications such as face tagging for social networking, consumer products, and gamming utilize color images stored in distributed repositories. Such images are often in compressed format and of different dimensions. This compression mismatch problem may adversely affect the performance of the face recognition engine. In this paper, we present a comparative investigation of the image compression mismatch problem. Two commonly used color image based face recognition solutions are utilized. More than three thousand images of 341 subjects, typical of the problem, are collected from three public databases. The experimental results support the main thesis of the paper that recognition performance depends critically on the color image properties.

With our society more information-driven, we have begun to distribute data in wide-area storage systems. At the same time, both physical failure and logic error have made it difficult to bring the necessary recovery to bear on remote data disaster, and understanding this proceeding. We describe ARRAY, a system architecture for data disaster recovery that combines reliability, storage space, and security to improve performance for data recovery applications. The paper presents an exhaustive analysis of the design space of ARRAY systems, focusing on the trade-offs between reliability, storage space, security, and performance that ARRAY must make. We present RSRAII (Replication-based Snapshot Redundant Array of Independent Imagefiles) which is a configurable RAID-like data erasure-coding, and also others benefits come from consolidation both erasure-coding and replication strategies. A novel algorithm is proposed to improve snapshot performance referred to as SMPDP (Snapshot based on Multi-Parallel Degree Pipeline).

Current and future air traffic is requiring new procedures and systems to achieve a greater automation of air-traffic operations. Particular difficulty presents the automation of arrival air-traffic operations in terminal areas due to aircraft speeds and environment variability into a delimited airspace where multiple aircraft converge. Several projects have proposed guidelines to implement new operational concepts as well as airborne and ground systems to carry out corresponding procedures. Developing procedures and systems are closely related. Therefore, usually it requires to analyze and to design them in a combined manner. In this paper we present an agent-oriented analysis and modeling of airborne systems capabilities to perform automated arrival and approach procedures based on user preference trajectories. A detailed architecture model of airborne capabilities is achieved through a methodological analysis of an arrival traffic scenario within the trajectory based operations paradigm.

This study presents a method based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and a spatial template-based matching approach to extract sensorimotor oscillatory activities from multi-channel magnetoencephalographic (MEG) measurements during right index finger lifting. The longitudinal gradiometer of the sensor unit which presents most prominent SEF was selected on which each single-trial recording was decomposed into a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). The correlation between each IMF of the selected channel and raw data on other channels were created and represented as a spatial map. The sensorimotor-related IMFs with corresponding correlational spatial map exhibiting large values on primary sensorimotor area (SMI) were selected via spatial-template matching process. Trial-specific alpha and beta bands were determined in sensorimotor-related oscillatory activities using a two-spectrum comparison between the spectra obtained from baseline period (-4 to -3 s) and movement-onset period (-0.5 to 0.5 s). Sensorimotor-related oscillatory activities were filtered within the trial-specific frequency bands to resolve task-related oscillatory activities. Results demonstrated that the optimal phase and amplitude information were preserved not only for alpha suppression (event-related desynchronization) and beta rebound (event-related synchronization) but also for profound analysis of subtle dynamics across trials. The retention of high SNR in the extracted oscillatory activities allow various methods of source estimation that can be applied to study the intricate brain dynamics of motor control mechanisms. The present study enables the possibility of investigating cortical pathophysiology of movement disorder on a trial-by-trial basis which also permits an effective alternative for participants or patients who can not endure lengthy procedures or are incapable of sustaining long experiments. © 2009 Biomedical engineering Society.

In this paper, a general framework for the identification of discrete-time time-varying system is proposed. To make the problem tractable, the time variation is approximated by a piecewise constant function assuming finite number N of unknown values. The algorithms proposed would be applicable for switched system with linear and nonlinear subsystems. It also facilitates the derivation of both offline and online parameter identification algorithms. Extensive simulation studies show that our algorithm can indeed provide accurate estimates of the plant parameters even in noisy cases. A preliminary convergence analysis is also available, which we would further develop in the near future.

Paper shows direct connection and implementation way of designed control schémas of prepared applications to an industrial WinPLC. Paper deals with industrial realization of feedback control of demanding applications on their control, control algorithms and visualization together with design, implementation and real time control from MATLAB/Simulink Environment. Described is a way to produce a permanent solution in control applications that are fully prepared, designed and implemented directly from MATLAB/Simulink to the target control platform. As a part, the mentioned solution is using a multiplatform control system REX as a bridge between MATLAB and target platforms. These methods allow minimizing costs of development of control of applications, because it produces target permanent realizations in comparison to classical development methods that usually need expensive real time measurement cards and produce only one purpose development solution. As next benefit the application is created for visualization the data from RT database during the measurement and control process. This last benefit produce an interesting data from real control process to give a next reason to use of WinCon solution.
