In hard-real-time environment, scheduling periodic tasks upon multiprocessors is one of the most popular problems where uniform multiprocessor scheduling is a well-known one. In this platform, execution time of each task in one processor is proportional to the computing capacity of this processor. From previous works, we know there are only approximate feasible solutions for on-line scheduling on uniform multiprocessors. In this paper, with task migration, we first present a novel model called T-Ler plane to describe the behavior of tasks and processors, and two optimal on-line algorithms based on T-Ler plane to schedule real-time tasks with dynamic-priority assignment on uniform multiprocessors. To make it practical and to reduce context switches, we also present a polynomial-time algorithm to bound the times of rescheduling in a T-Ler plane. Since task migration is easier in SOC multicore processors, our result might be applicable and adapted to many asymmetric multicore platforms.

This study developed a rubber foam model consisting of a surface layer of solid and a base layer of honeycomb core and used it to investigate head injury protective performance. An explicit finite element method based on the experimental data was used to simulate head impact on the rubber foam. The peak acceleration and head injury criterion (HIC) were employed to assess the shock-absorbing capability of the foam. This study supports the feasibility of using rubber foam with honeycomb core construction to improve shockabsorbing capability. The honeycomb-core structure provided an excellent cushioning effect via a lower axial shear stiffness of the surface layer and lower transverse shearing stiffness of the core. The core's dimensions were an important parameter in determining the shearing stiffness. The analysis suggested that the cushioning effect would significantly reduce the peak force on the head from a fall and delay the occurrence of the peak value during impact, resulting in a marked reduction in the peak acceleration and HIC values of the head. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, we try to select features based on attribute clustering without knowing the exact cluster numbers in advance. A similarity measure for a pair of attributes is first described, and an attribute clustering approach based on the CAST algorithm is then proposed to group the attributes into adequate number of clusters. The representative attributes found in the clusters are thus used for classification such that the whole feature space is greatly reduced. If the values of some representative attributes cannot be obtained from current environments for inference, some other possible attributes in the same clusters can also be used to achieve approximate inference results.

The encoding process of vector quantization (VQ) is computational complex and time consuming. Compared with traditional Euclidean distance computation, some geometric properties can generate approximations with simpler computation and filter out impossible codevectors to reduce computation time. In this paper, we introduce a new approximation adopting orthogonal projection on a hyperplane for speed-up VQ encoding. Experimental results show that our proposed scheme requires only 2.7~23.2% of actual Euclidean distance calculation in the full searching. Having been proved, our proposed scheme requires only 30.1~40.3% of computation time that other recently proposed schemes need.

We have developed a system that allows a piano to perform automatically. To get the piano to play music in the manner of a live pianist, we must add expression to the piano's performance. In the case of piano music, there are often 1000 or more notes in the score of even a short piece of music, and the automatic editor must spend a huge amount of time to accurately simulate the emotionally expressive performance of a highly skilled pianist. To shorten this editorial time, we have developed an interactive musical editing system to edit music more efficiently by utilizing a database. We have analyzed MIDI data regarding the performances of highly skilled pianists in order to observe the stylistic tendencies of their performances. We found that phrases having similar patterns in the same composition were performed in similar styles. Therefore, we developed a system that searches for similar phrases throughout the musical score and infers the style of their performance. Here, we propose a method using DP (Dynamic Programming) matching as a way to search for similar phrases and a method for inferring performance expression. ©ISAROB 2008.

It is known that modeling impedance in distribution networks, including the percentage of induction motor load, is essential to the study of distribution system dynamic responses. In this paper, some field observations of dynamic load behaviors related to distribution network impedance and the percentage of induction motor load are justified using a novel composite load model and output trajectory sensitivity analysis. To provide this justification, we propose a composite load model named Z-ZIP-IM where equivalent distribution network impedance is serially connected to a conventional ZIP-induction motor (ZIP-IM) model. Then parameter values of the proposed composite load model are estimated using actual measurement data from TVA. Finally, output trajectory sensitivity with respect to model parameters at the obtained values is analyzed. In addition, the numerical identifiability of the obtained parameter values is tested.

Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) [1,2], which is an on-demand routing protocol, becomes the most popular source routing protocol for MANET. Each mobile node is required to maintain route caches that contain the source routes of which the mobile is aware. Although DSR can respond a route quickly, it yields a long delay when a route is rebuilt. This is because when source node receives RERR packet, it will try to find alternative routes from route cache. If alternative routes are not available, source node, then, will enter route discovery phase to find new routes. Finding a route in wireless network require considerable resources, such as time, bandwidth, and power because it relies on broadcasting. As the extension of DISTANCE algorithm presented in [3], Adaptive DISTANCE (ADISTANCE) is proposed in this paper. From simulation result it shows that the adaptive extension of DISTANCE gives ability to work in asynchronous communication network.

Image information provided by cameras is strongly affected by environmental influence of an object's circumjacent circumference. Therefore, in this study, we integrate distance information provided from a laser range sensor (LRS) and image information provided by a camera. This combination reduced environmental influence. This system consists of an object extraction section and a recognition processing section, and we are now developing the object extraction section. First, the object extraction section performs region splitting of image information provided by a camera. The distance information that was provided from the LRS is converted into a set of three-dimensional coordinates that matched the camera image. The integrated processing matches distance information with the image which did the region splitting. And it calculates the distance to each area. It integrates all of the converted information and extracts the object from the integrated information. In this study we inspected the effectiveness of the system by performing an object extraction experiment using the combined integrated distance information and image information. From these results, we have learned how to remove a background and a floor surface by using the distance information, and simpler object extraction was enabled. ©ISAROB 2008.

Data availability is a challenging issue for large- scale cluster file systems built upon thousands of individual storage devices. Replication is a well-known solution used to improve data availability. However, how to efficiently guarantee replicas consistency under concurrent conflict mutations remains a challenge. Moreover, how to quickly recover replica consistency from a storage server crash or storage device failure is also a tough problem. In this paper, we present a replication-based data availability mechanism designed for a large-scale cluster file system prototype named LionFS. Unlike other replicated storage systems that serialize replica updates, LionFS introduces a relaxed consistency model to enable concurrent updating all replicas for a mutation operation, greatly reducing the latency of operations. LionFS ensures replica consistency if applications use file locks to synchronize the concurrent conflict mutations. Another novelty of this mechanism is its light-weight log, which only records failed mutations and imposes no overhead on failure-free execution and low overhead when some storage devices are unavailable. Furthermore, recovery of replica consistency needs not stop the file system services and running applications. Performance evaluation shows that our solution achieves 50-70% higher write performance than serial replica updates. The logging overhead is shown to be low, and the recovery time is proportional to the amount of data written during the failure.

In this paper, we share and embed secrets with images using secret expansion in such a way that secrets are easily reconstructable from the two shares, but getting any one share reveals no information about the secrets. After the reconstruction scheme, the original image can be completely recovered. The proposed scheme is simple without using any data compression and without any extra information.
