Case-based reasoning (CBR) uses the same technique in solving tasks that needs reference from variety of situations. It can render decision-making easier by retrieving past solutions from situations that are similar to the one at hand and make necessary adjustments in order to adopt them. In this paper, an ontology-based fuzzy CBR support system for ship's collision avoidance is presented to avoid the cumbersome tasks of creating a new solution each time, when a new situation is encountered. The first level of the ontology-based CBR identifies the dangerous ships and indexes the new case. The second level retrieves cases from the ontology and adapts the solution to solve for the output. The CBR's accuracy depends on the efficient retrieval of possible solutions, and the proposed algorithm improves the effectiveness of solving the similarity to a new case at hand.

In this paper we propose a methodology based on supervised automatic learning in order to classify the behaviour of generators in terms of their performance in providing primary frequency control ancillary services. The problem is posed as a time-series classification problem, and handled by using state-of- the-art supervised learning methods such as ensembles of decision trees and support-vector machines combined with several preprocessing techniques. The method was designed in the context of the Belgian system and is validated on real-life data composed of more than 600 time-series recorded on this system.

Sphere decoding enables maximum likelihood (ML) detection with lower complexity than other decoding algorithms, but it still suffers from large computational delay. This paper proposes a vertical partial Euclidean distance (PED) computation method to reduce the critical path delay and computational resources. Since the proposed method computes ahead the PED of lower levels using upper level symbols, a high speed PED computation unit can be implemented with less hardware resources

We propose an intuitive computer graphics authoring method based on interactive evolutionary computation (IEC). Our previous systems employed genetic algorithm (GA) and mainly focused on exploration of a single optimum 3D graphics model. The proposed method adopts a different computation strategy called immune algorithm (IA) to ease the creation of varied 3D models even if a user doesn't have any specific idea of final 3D products. Because artistic work like graphics design needs a process to diversify the user's imagery, a tool that allows the user to select his/her preferred one from a broad range of possible solutions is particularly desired. IA enables to effectively explore a wealth of solutions in a huge 3D parametric space by using its essential mechanisms such as antibody formation and self-regulating function. We conducted an experiment to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The result shows that the proposed method helps the user to easily generating wide variety of 3D graphics models.

In applications such as e-Health systems, a user's consent should usually be obtained before his/her private information can be disclosed. For this purpose, users need to specify their privacy preferences about what data are to be disclosed to which recipients for what purposes. However, this may become a daunting task in a complicated application that involves potentially a large number of combinations of data recipients, purposes, and granularities of data. This paper proposes a hierarchical approach to address this issue. More specifically, we first observe that hierarchies naturally exist in each dimension of a privacy preference. We then propose a series of methods for users to more conveniently specify their privacy preferences based on such hierarchies. We also define meta-policies to resolve potential conflicts between preferences specified over time. Finally, we discuss how to represent the preferences with a snow- flake schema in backend databases.

Sign language is complex visual-spatial language most used in deaf society, and is a representative example of hand gesture with linguistic structure. Korean manual alphabet is a manual alphabet that augments the vowel and consonant of Korean sign language. This paper presents a system which recognizes the Korean manual alphabet (KMA) using a USB camera and translates into a normal Korean character. The system captures images from a camera and extracts skin color regions from an image, and finds a hand region. The system detects a hand without particular cloth in a complex background. We use 14 KMA hand shape as template images, and the system compares hand shape with template images using a correlation coefficient method.

This paper presents a system which recognizes the Korean manual alphabet (KMA) using a USB camera and translates into a normal Korean character. The system captures images from a camera and extracts skin color region from an image, and finds a hand region. The system detects a skin colored hand without particular cloth in a complex background. We use 33 KMA hand shapes as template images, and the system compares hand shape with template images using a correlation coefficient method and composes a text syllable of initial consonant, medial vowel and final consonant.

A problem to make a graph strongly connected is one of the most fundamental problems in graph theory. The known parallel algorithm solves this problem in O(log n) time using O(n 3 ) processors on a CRCW PRAM model. In this paper we present a parallel algorithm to find the minimum edges to make a disconnected directed acyclic graph strongly connected in O(log(m + n)) time using O(m + n) processors on a CREW PRAM model. This algorithm is an efficient parallel algorithm because the number of processors varies according to the density of the given graph.

We have reported the successful use of the Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) reaction for Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) DNA in a 25 μl micro-reactor for the development of a rapid diagnostic device recently. This method shows the successful amplification of HBV DNA with high specificity and sensitivity efficiently within one hour. Such a powerful method can be used for many other fast diagnostic applications with the help of optimal primer design and miniaturization of reactor. In this report, we will first summarize the general design rules for primer design from literature reviews and our experimental results. We will discuss the effects of HBV primers and concentrations of working buffers for optimal performance. © 2007 National Taiwan University.

In this paper, we present a new approach to investigate the existence and design of reduced-order proper H_(infinity) controllers that provide the same level of performance as that of full-order controllers. By revealing some special features of the LMI-based solvability conditions for the H_(infinity) control problem for descriptor systems, we obtain a refined bound on the order of H_(infinity) controllers, which is independent of (invariant under the allowed transformations on) a descriptor realization of the generalized plant. Moreover, we provide two LMI-based algorithms to design the reduced-order controllers and demonstrate the validity of the presented theoretical results via two numerical examples. This paper not only extends in a satisfying way the results on reduced-order H_(infinity) controllers for state-space systems to descriptor systems, but also provides insight into the mechanism by which the order of H_(infinity) controllers for descriptor systems can be reduced through a consideration of the unstable finite zeros or infinite zeros.
