This paper presents a total solution on EMG signal-based walking phase recognition for people with lower limb disability. Various environmental factors such as sensed location, walking speed, and ground inclination are taken into consideration in all the phases of signal sensing, feature extraction, feature selection, and classification. Based on analysis on fourteen well-known feature extraction methods in varying environmental situation, this paper proposes a methodology for selecting a good feature set, and then demonstrates effectiveness of the proposed approach with the classification results.

An online semi-supervised active learning algorithm is proposed, which is based on self-organizing incremental neural network (SOINN). The proposed method do not need any priori knowledge such as number of nodes or number of classes; it can automatically learn number of nodes and teacher vectors needed by the current task; It can realize online incremental learning even life-long learning. The experiments for artificial data and real world data show that the proposed method works efficiently.

NASA's Global Precipitation Mission will rely on a constellation of cooperative satellites with a variety of microwave radiometers to make global rainfall measurements. Thus, it is crucial to achieve brightness temperature (T b ) measurement consistency among the constellation as well as to maintain sustained calibration accuracy over the lifetime of each satellite sensor. In-orbit inter-satellite radiometric calibration techniques provide a long term, group-wise solution; however, since radiometers operate at different frequencies and viewing angles,T b normalizations are made before making intermediate comparisons of their near-simultaneous measurements. In this paper, we investigate two approaches to perform these normalizations from one satellite's measurements to another. One approach is uses Taylor's series expansion around source frequency to predict T b 's of destination frequency. The relationship between T b 's and frequencies are derived from simulations using an oceanic radiative transfer model (RTM) over a wide variety of environmental conditions. The other approach uses a multi-variable linear regression built from RTMT b simulations among all frequency and V- and H-polarizations. These two approaches are applied in comparing external measurements between WindSat (on Coriolis),TMI (on TRMM) and AMSR (on ADEOS-II). Accuracy prediction and error source analysis are discussed along with calibration results.

In this study, Kinesio Tape is used in patients with lateral epicondylitis. The ultrasonic image sequences of elbow are recorded dynamically, and then motion tracking is applied to assist in understanding the effect of the therapy. Motion tracking, based on optical flow method, is used to track certain landmark on the ultrasound image, which is very ambiguous, for estimating the motion of muscle. Hierarchical block tracking technique is proposed to perform this task. The motions with and without Kinesio Taping are compared and can be used as quantitative indicators for the treatment. The experimental results show that Kinesio Taping makes the motion of muscle on the ultrasonic images enlarge. It means that the performance of muscle motion gets improve.

Information security and assurance is a rapidly developing area therefore government and industry have high demand for information security professionals. This paper reports collaboration activities between North Carolina A&T State University (NC A&T SU) and University of North Carolina (UNC) Charlotte as well as results and lessons learned. Leveraging the strength of the department of Software engineering and Information system at UNC Charlotte the department of computer science at NC A&T SU has established the new Information Assurance (IA) concentration undergraduate curriculum. Four new IA courses, five IA interactive simulation software packages and two isolated IA laboratories are developed. Faculty members in both universities have collaborated to manage and mentor the Cyber-Defender programs, host IA and Cyber Security symposiums, submit proposals, advise graduate students and publish papers. The outcome exhibits that the collaboration between the majority and minority universities serves as a pathway for the minority university to build competencies in information assurance, and bridged the widening "information assurance gap" between majority and minority universities.

This paper considers the design problem of the robust quadratic-optimal parallel-distributed-compensation (PDC) controllers for the Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy-model- based control systems with both elemental parametric uncertainties and norm-bounded approximation error. An integrative method, which complementarily fuses the robust stabilizability condition, the orthogonal-functions approach (OFA) and the hybrid Taguchi-genetic algorithm (HTGA), is presented in this paper to design the robust quadratic-optimal PDC controllers, in which the robust stabilizability condition is proposed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs).

To improve the cycle life and efficiency of an energy storage system for HEV, a dynamic control system consisted of a switch between battery and ultracapacitor module and a controller is proposed, which is appropriate for mild hybrid vehicle with 42 V power net. The switch can be controlled based on the status of the battery and the ultracapacitor module, and a control algorithm that could largely decrease the number of high charging current peak is also implemented. Therefore the cycle life of the battery can be improved such that it is suitable for a mild hybrid vehicle with frequent engine start-stop and regenerative-braking. Also, by maximizing the use of the ultracapacitor, the system efficiency during high current charging and discharging operation is improved. Finally, this system has the effects that improves the efficiency of energy storage system and reduces the fuel consumption of a vehicle. To verify the validity of the proposed system, this paper presented cycles test results of different energy storage systems: a simple VRLA battery, hybrid energy pack (HEP, a VRLA battery in parallel with Ultracapacitor) and a HEP with a switch that controlled by energy management system (EMS). From the experimental result, it was proved the effectiveness of the algorithm.

In this work, we investigate the characteristics of the 2004 major storm events based on GPS-TEC measurement at Scott Base station Antarctica (77.9degS, 166.8degE). The F2 layer critical frequencies and peak height during the storm from the ionosonde measurement at the station are also investigated. Our main emphasis was on the characteristics and response during major storms events. Our results include the daily GPS-TEC and F2 layer critical frequencies and peak height from KEL IPS-42 ionosonde measurements at Scott Base station. For the year 2004, 4 storm days are classified as major storms, which have occurred on 27 th July 2004, referred to as Storm-A and on 8 th to 10 th November 2004 referred to as Storm-B. The World Data Center (WDC) Kp, Dst, and Ap highest indices for Storm-A is 9, -197 nT, and 162 respectively while for Storm-B is 9, -373 nT, and 189 respectively. The response of the ionosphere provide us some indicators of the processes and geophysical changes of the Sun-Heliospheric system during the intense geomagnetic storm period.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has proved to be good sensing elements for many purposes including flow variations sensing and chemical vapor sensing. However, they are not used in real applications due to the cost and size of the complex equipments required to measure the response of MWCNTs. The authors proposed a novel methodology to integrate MWCNTs sensors on commercial complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) processed chips using dielectrophoresis (DEP). The response of MWCNTs sensors will be measured by CMOS circuit on the same substrate. Using our proposed methodology, a low cost, compact and ultra-low power MWCNTs sensor could be built and ready for commercial applications. In this paper, the authors discuss the issues on MWCNTs resistance measurement and integration of MWCNTs sensing elements -issues that will critically affect the design of the circuit components on the CMOS chip. A 0.35mum CMOS prototype will be made to demonstrate the feasibility of such CNT-CMOS integration. Simulation results and implementation details will be given.

Crosstalk minimization is one of the most important high performance aspects in interconnecting VLSI circuits. With advancement of fabrication technology, devices and interconnecting wires are placed in closer proximity and circuits operate at higher frequencies. This results in crosstalk between wire segments. Crosstalk minimization problem for the reserved two-layer Manhattan channel routing is NP-hard, even if the channel instances are free from any vertical constraint (simplest channel instances). In this paper we have developed heuristic algorithms for computing reduced crosstalk two-layer channel routing solutions for simplest as well as general channel instances. In general, the results obtained are highly encouraging.
