This paper proposes a robust hand-posture recognition method by learning similarity between hand-posture and structure for the performance improvement of vision-based hand-posture recognition. The difficulties in vision-based hand-posture recognition lie in viewing direction dependency and self-occlusion problem due to the high degree-of-freedom of human hand. General approaches to deal with these problems include multiple camera approach and methods of limiting the relative angle between cameras and the user's hand. In the case of using multiple cameras, however, fusion techniques to induce the final decision should be considered. Limiting the angle of user's hand restricts the user's freedom. The proposed method combines angular features and appearance features to describe hand-postures by a two-layered data structure and includes learning the similarity between the two types of features. The validity of the proposed method is evaluated by applying it to the hand-posture recognition system using three cameras. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

This paper focuses on the mapping strategies in the interface design for the Expression Synthesis Project (ESP). The goal of ESP is to use the metaphor of driving to allow non-experts to interactively create expressive renderings of music pieces. In ESP, the road represents the music, with bends and straight segments representing places where one might slow down and speed up respectively. The user controls the tempo (rate of beats) and dynamics (amplitude) by the way s/he drives through the road. Our design objective in the ESP environment is to define mapping strategies that guarantee tempo smoothness, a hallmark of expert and practiced performances, under all driving conditions. Because the road has non-zero width, several strategies exist for mapping the car's position on the road to the musical score. We propose mapping strategies that ensure tempo smoothness, and provide mathematical and empirical proofs for the success of these strategies. © 2006 ACM.

This paper presents a new optimization algorithm for designing parallel cyclic redundancy check (CRC) circuits widely adopted to detect burst errors in high-speed communications. Our heuristic algorithm is focused on minimizing the logic level and finding XOR terms shared as many as possible. An Ethernet 32-bit CRC generator, which was designed and mapped to FPGA and a standard cell library, shows the superiority of our approach in reducing the delay and area overhead

This paper examines the mechanism of disturbance rejection in control systems employing a technique called equivalent-input-disturbance estimation. Breakthrough strides in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) demand a paradigm shift in traditional data acquisition and signal processing methodologies used for structural health monitoring (SHM). One such device which embodies MEMS technology is the Mote. Motes integrate a microprocessor, memory, and a radio transmitter together and can be outfitted with a plethora of industry standard sensory devices with little or no modification. The implication of this conglomerated setup is that it can be used to reduce, store, and ship data at the acquisition site. Moreover, the commercial development of these devices has reduced production costs and increased product development. As such, the intrinsic versatility of a Mote system can be affordably harnessed and dense sensor arrays can be utilized to enhance real-time modal parameter identification, the backbone of global vibration based SHM techniques. However there are limitations which need to be addressed. For example, significant data loss is attributed to the low bandwidth of the low power radio transmitter employed on Mica2 Motes. This issue of contention has been addressed by recent technological improvements in wireless transmission standards. Yet in spite of the progress made by new transmission protocols and standards towards reducing radio power consumption, increasing bandwidth, and reducing transmission latency, they alone will not meet all of the needs of a full-scale wireless SHM system. In light of this realization the efforts of this paper are shifted from previous studies where time histories were streamed from the data acquisition site to a central location for processing. Now instead the focus is on decentralizing the SHM system by exploiting the on-board computational faculties of a Mote. Here a simple signal processing and spectrum curve-fitting technique is used to automatically extract dominant frequency components of an acceleration time history record. As the increasing of system performance and computing power, embedded systems are more complicated and interactive. Therefore, operating system (OS) plays a more important role in embedded systems to utilize various hardware and software resources. However, no OS can meet all requirements of various embedded systems. Due to the advance of reconfigurable processors, system requirements can be more dynamic. Embedded OS has becoming more critical in the development of embedded systems and thus there is a strong need of configurable embedded OS to better and faster build up the target system. In this paper, we propose a configurable OS, called COS, based on SOA (service-oriented architecture) for embedded SoC (system on a chip) systems to build an application specific OS according to the system requirements. COS can be easily configured to better utilize the resources of the target embedded platform and have better support to the embedded application. Moreover, the COS can easily extend new features or functionalities of other OSes and even be adapted to the designs of other OSes. We implement COS on an ARM platform to prove its configurability and also evaluate its overhead. We believe that COS can be configured to meet the various requirements in embedded SoC systems and help to speed up the embedded system development process

In this paper, design principles and application of a thin and flexible intravascular top hat monopole probe with increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and improved longitudinal and radial coverage are described and compared with the conventional monopole probe. The top hat probe is constructed by removing a segment of the shield of a coaxial cable. A flexible thin copper foil in contact with the inner conductor of the cable is added to the end section of the cable. The copper foil acts as an antenna top hat load increasing the uniformity of the current distribution on the probe and establishes a uniform region of SNR distribution around the probe. Improvement of the SNR distribution of the top hat probe relative to the conventional monopole probe is evaluated using quantitative indices. Experimental results show that for the top hat probe, the ratio of the maximum image SNR to its relative standard deviation (SR) is 2.73 times higher than that of a conventional probe. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper conveys Bayesian interpretation of improved integrated adaptive fuzzy clustering(IAFC), which is one of the adaptive fuzzy neural network models and suggests upper bound of vigilance parameter, which gives us a guideline to endow IAFC with flexibility within the framework of minimum risk classifier. Besides, we proposed the off-line and on-line learning strategy of IAFC. The proposed techniques are applied to construct facial expression recognition system dealing with neutral, happy, sad, and angry. We empirically show that proposed methods are able to outperform the conventional IAFC.

In this paper, we present a formal process model to support the comprehension and maintenance of software systems. The model provides a formal ontological representation that supports the use of reasoning services across different knowledge resources. In the presented approach, we employ our Description Logic knowledge base to support the maintenance process management, as well as detailed analyses among resources, e.g., the traceability between various software artifacts. The resulting unified process model provides users with active guidance in selecting and utilizing these resources that are context-sensitive to a particular comprehension task. We illustrate both, the technical foundation based on our existing SOUND environment, as well as the general objectives and goals of our process model.

In this paper, we propose a bidirectional buffer repeater insertion to reduce the RLC tree delay in multi-source multi-sink systems which involve four significant factors in our works. First, inductance effect is taken into account due to the reason that chip sizes with the exponential reduction and high work frequency. Second, bidirectional buffer repeater could improve interconnect delay more than unidirectional buffer insertion. Third, the location of insertion buffer is also considered in our work. Fourth, more than one buffer could be inserted in critical path while buffers have already existed. Finally, we develop a graphical user interface for designers to estimate the delay with bidirectional buffer repeater insertion target multi-source multi-sink systems. Experiment results shown that the reduced delay rate is 50.73% and 64.47% in 0.18 and 0.35 micron fabrication process, respectively
