Because of rapid growth of multimedia data over the Internet, the infobesity has been emerging in recent years. Many recommender systems (RSs) have been proposed using a variety of techniques, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistical analysis, and data mining. Nowadays, E-commerce companies such as Amazon, eBay, Netflix, etc. have applied RSs conveniently to provide better customer services than before by enabling customized multimedia-content recommendations. It is well known that classical RSs are almost all based on the user-item attribute matrices. However, this two-fold user-item relationship should be extended to the emerging many-fold relationship among an arbitrary number of attribute groups so that the corresponding new RSs may lead to better performances. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a novel personalized multimedia recommender system (PMRS) according to our proposed new parallel higher-order tensor singular-value-decomposition (PHOTSVD) algorithm. This PHOTSVD algorithm is capable of accommodating an arbitrary number of entities such as social-media channels, users, queries, webpages, etc. in a robust RS. Furthermore, we also investigate the cold start and data bias problems critical to RSs. Finally, we compare the performances of our proposed new PMRS and three other existing tensor-based RSs over realworld data with respect to the well-adopted metric, namely normalized root-mean-square error (NRMSE). Our proposed new PMRS greatly outperforms the other three existing tensor-based RSs in terms of NRMSE. © 1963-12012 IEEE.

Integrating renewable energy sources into smart grids increases supply and demand management because renewable energy sources are intermittent and variable. To overcome this type of challenge, short-term load forecasting (STLF) is essential for managing energy, demand-side flexibility, and the stability of smart grids with renewable energy integration. This paper presents a new model called BiGRU-CNN to improve the operation of STLF in smart grids. The BiGRU-CNN model integrates bidirectional gated recurrent units (BiGRUs) to model temporal dependencies and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to extract spatial patterns from energy consumption data. The newly developed BiGRU captures past and future contexts through bidirectional processing, and the CNN component extracts high-level features to enhance the accuracy of load demand prediction. The BiGRU-CNN model is compared with two other hybrid models, CNN-LSTM and CNN-GRU, on real-world data from American electric power (AEP) and ISONE datasets. Simulation results show that the proposed BiGRU-CNN outperforms other models, with single-step forecasting yielding root mean square error (RMSE) of 121.43 (AEP) and 123.57 (ISONE), mean absolute error (MAE) of 90.95 (AEP) and 62.97 (ISONE), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 0.61% (AEP) and 0.41% (ISONE). For multi-step forecasting, the model yields RMSE of 680.02 (AEP) and 581.12 (ISONE), MAE of 481.12 (AEP) and 411.20 (ISONE), and MAPE of 3.27% (AEP) and 2.91% (ISONE). The results show that the BiGRU-CNN model can generate accurate and reliable STLF, which is useful in managing massive renewable energy-integrated smart grids. © 2025 The Author(s). Transport assets are progressively more exposed to several issues, including climate change, and vulnerability to natural hazards such as subsidence, landslides, and seismic phenomena, to mention a few. They can affect the structural integrity of infrastructures causing damages and deteriorations. They support the prioritization of the most effective countermeasures. We propose a method based on Data-Fusion approach, merging multi-source and multi-scale information acquired by multi-sensors systems. It enhances the interpretation of fused data under a holistic framework. For this purpose, processing methods of spaceborne data, such as Multi-temporal SAR Interferometry, are used to detect displacements of transport assets, with millimetre accuracy. This technique is complemented by more detailed data detected by UAVs and Ground Based Non-Destructive Testing Methods, including laser scanner surveys and by prospecting data collected by Ground Penetrating Radar. All these data are simultaneously fused and digitally integrated into a comprehensive and high-resolution Digital Twin, providing a useful tool to support operators and public authorities to identify and prioritize maintenance and rehabilitation actions. According to this holistic framework, the introduction of the Digital Twin, which replicates a real asset in a virtual or augmented reality environment, represents a relevant and strategic tool or facility to tackle effectively and efficiently the maintenance issues, enhancing resilience and operating life of the infrastructures. This study shows an experimental application of the proposed methodology by fusing spatial, aerial, ground-based, and geophysical surveys using also augmented reality tools, to have the best interface for visualizing the twin in the real environment. This allows smart evaluation and monitoring which has resoluted, efficient, holistic and up-to-date information. © 2023 SPIE.

In this review, the application of machine learning (ML) algorithms in water environment research is proficiently explored. The quick increase in data size related to the water environment has necessitated the use of ML for data analysis, classification, and forecasting. Unlike classical models, machine learning models excel in solving complex problems. They have been successfully applied to various aspects of water management and treatment systems, such as construction, simulation, evaluation, water pollution surveillance, controlling, water quality amelioration, and watershed environmental security management. The survey specifically focuses on the evaluation of water quality in diverse water environments, including surface water, drinking water, groundwater, sewage, and seawater. Moreover, potential future implementations of machine learning in water environments are proposed. ML facilitates the detection and prediction of water contamination events, as well as the provision of decision support systems for water resource management. Real-time monitoring of water quality, anomaly detection, and prediction of potential contamination events are among the specific applications of machine learning high-lighted. The review covers the advantages and disadvantages of generally used ML algorithms, with a particular emphasis on new ML techniques that surpass classical methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Ventilation and Temperature Control for Energy-efficient and Healthy Buildings: A Differentiable PDE Approach

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a notable shift in literature towards enhancing indoor air quality and public health via Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control. However, many of these studies simplify indoor dynamics using ordinary differential equations (ODEs), neglecting the complex airflow dynamics and the resulted spatial-temporal distribution of aerosol particles, gas constituents and viral pathogen, which is crucial for effective ventilation control design. We present an innovative partial differential equation (PDE)-based learning and control framework for building HVAC control. The goal is to determine the optimal airflow supply rate and supply air temperature to minimize the energy consumption while maintaining a comfortable and healthy indoor environment. In the proposed framework, the dynamics of airflow, thermal dynamics, and air quality (measured by CO2 concentration) are modeled using PDEs. We formulate both the system learning and optimal HVAC control as PDE-constrained optimization, and we propose a gradient descent approach based on the adjoint method to effectively learn the unknown PDE model parameters and optimize the building control actions. We demonstrate that the proposed approach can accurately learn the building model on both synthetic and real-world datasets. Furthermore, the proposed approach can significantly reduce energy consumption while ensuring occupants' comfort and safety constraints compared to existing control methods such as maximum airflow policy, learning-based control with reinforcement learning, and control with ODE models. This survey explores the transformative impact of foundation models (FMs) in artificial intelligence, focusing on their integration with federated learning (FL) for advancing biomedical research. Foundation models such as ChatGPT, LlaMa, and CLIP, which are trained on vast datasets through methods including unsupervised pretraining, self-supervised learning, instructed fine-tuning, and reinforcement learning from human feedback, represent significant advancements in machine learning. These models, with their ability to generate coherent text and realistic images, are crucial for biomedical applications that require processing diverse data forms such as clinical reports, diagnostic images, and multimodal patient interactions. The incorporation of FL with these sophisticated models presents a promising strategy to harness their analytical power while safeguarding the privacy of sensitive medical data. This approach not only enhances the capabilities of FMs in medical diagnostics and personalized treatment but also addresses critical concerns about data privacy and security in healthcare. This survey reviews the current applications of FMs in federated settings, underscores the challenges, and identifies future research directions including scaling FMs, managing data diversity, and enhancing communication efficiency within FL frameworks. StackOverflow, with its vast question repository and limited labeled examples, raise an annotation challenge for us. We address this gap by proposing RoBERTa+MAML, a few-shot named entity recognition (NER) method leveraging meta-learning. Our approach, evaluated on the StackOverflow NER corpus (27 entity types), achieves a 5% F1 score improvement over the baseline. Supercapacitors are known for longer cycle life and faster charging rate compared to batteries. However, the energy density of supercapacitors requires improvement to expand their application space. To raise the energy density of redox supercapacitors, this work demonstrates electro-polymerization on both sides of electrodes to increase material loading, reduce overall device mass, and consequently increase the capacitance, power, and energy density of supercapacitors. We achieved an energy density of 1823 mWh kg-1 and a power density of 16.5 W kg-1 with a wide potential window of 3 V. © 2023 IEEE.

Resistive memories, such as phase change memories and resistive random access memories have attracted significant attention in recent years due to their better scalability, speed, rewritability, and yet non-volatility. However, their limited endurance is still a major drawback that has to be improved before they can be widely adapted in large-scale systems. In this work, in order to reduce the wear out of the cells, we propose a new coding scheme, called endurance-limited memories (ELM) codes, that increases the endurance of these memories by limiting the number of cell programming operations. Namely, an -change t-write ELM code is a coding scheme that allows to write t messages into some n binary cells while guaranteeing that each cell is programmed at most ×. In case =1, these codes coincide with the well-studied write-once memory (WOM) codes. We study some models of these codes which depend upon whether the encoder knows on each write the number of times each cell was programmed, knows only the memory state, or even does not know anything. For the decoder, we consider these similar three cases. We fully characterize the capacity regions and the maximum sum-rates of three models where the encoder knows on each write the number of times each cell was programmed. In particular, it is shown that in these models the maximum sum-rate is\log\sum i=0 t i. We also study and expose the capacity regions of the models where the decoder is informed with the number of times each cell was programmed. Finally we present the most practical model where the encoder read the memory before encoding new data and the decoder has no information about the previous states of the memory. © 1963-2012 IEEE.
