Sudden cardiac death rate post-myocardial infarction due to arrhythmia is increasing. Cardiac ablation of infarcts is shown to reduce arrhythmogenic events. Current methods are inadequate to monitor the lesions during infarct ablation. Therefore novel noninvasive tools are necessary to provide real-time monitoring of ablation and to titrate the ablative power to reduce arrhythmogenicity. The purpose of this simulation study was to demonstrate the feasibility of microwave imaging (MWI) to monitor the temperature profile of the lesions during infarct ablation. A 2D model of the left ventricle was used with an infarct region of interest for microwave imaging electromagnetic simulation at 915 MHz using known myocardial dielectric properties and its temperature dependence. Distorted Born Iterative Method (DBIM) was used to reconstruct the relative permittivity that is mapped to the temperature field and compared within the infarct region. Good agreement was observed between the reconstructed and assigned temperature field within the infarct region. The study demonstrates the feasibility of using MWI for the non-invasive assessment of infarct tissue temperatures during ablation. © 2023 IEEE.

Haptics is the study of coupling the human sense of touch and motion with computer systems. In this study, we analyze weight perception of the brain based on electroencephalographic signals, which is obtained using a pressure tactile as a stimulus. The state of weight perception is represented by the relative power of alpha and beta sub-bands of subjects. Independent Component Analysis is applied for post-processing. In the final stage, Linear Discriminant Analysis and Support Vector Machine techniques are utilized for classification of the brain signals as either holding a weight or being in a resting state. Our proposed method achieved satisfactory performance when Support Vector Machine with Radial Basis Function kernel classifier and relative power features, which are obtained from the alpha sub-band of four EEG channels, were used. © 2021 IEEE.

Smart Cities are considered the intersection of technology and urban development, aiming to create sustainable, efficient, and citizen-centered environments using advanced tools such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and big data analytics. The major components of a smart city are smart buildings, smart transport, smart energy, smart health care, public safety and security, environmental and resource management, and smart technology. These components make the cities smart, transparent, and efficient. Information and communication technology is one of the most vital tools for modifying traditional cities into Smart Cities. Smart Cities are emerging as transformative urban ecosystems that leverage data, technology, and intelligent design to enhance sustainability, efficiency, and the quality of life for residents. Over 1,000 cities worldwide are developing or implementing smart city initiatives, with projected investments exceeding $1.5 trillion by 2025. Studies indicate Smart Cities can achieve up to 30% reductions in energy consumption and 20% improvements in public service efficiency. This paper presents a systematic review of 61 scholarly works, highlighting the benefits, challenges, and the central role of telecommunications in smart urban development. This systematic review dissects the dual nature of Smart Cities regarding their revolutionary capabilities and intrinsic challenges. The study points out important gaps in the literature, especially when it comes to long-term social effects, fair resource allocation, critical gaps in ethical governance, resource distribution policies, and their long-term implications on societal development, and ethical governance, underrepresentation of telecommunications as a central enabler, and propose future research directions to address these gaps.

In this research paper, we conducted a comparative study to measure the effectiveness of the provided technical support in computing project-based learning (PjBL) courses. Students learn much better by solving authentic real-world problems through PjBL. PjBL in computing education has proven to boost student motivation and engagement while enhancing academic performance. Crucial to PjBL in computing is the technical support that the instructors can provide to students, which is required for sustained, successful learning during project tasks. Without adequate support, PjBL will fall short of accomplishing its goals, leading to a rise in student frustration, a loss of motivation and engagement, and compromised learning outcomes. Measuring the impacts and effectiveness of the provided support is imperative for fostering continuous improvement, informed decision-making, and student success. It enables instructors to assess the impacts of their strategies, improve their approaches, and utilize their resources more effectively. To measure the impacts of technical support on students during PjBL, we performed a comparative study on two undergraduate computing courses in Spring 2024, Fundamentals of Software engineering and Database Systems. In both courses, students work on two assigned projects, one with little and inadequate support and the other with adequate support. We administered a post-survey after each project was completed. We analyzed students' selfreflection responses across four sub-scales, support satisfaction, motivation, self-efficacy, and project satisfaction. The results show a statistically significant increase in the supported project in the Fundamentals of Software engineering course and no difference in the Database Systems course. This finding is likely due to other differences between the two projects for the Database Systems course beyond support, such as project scale. In this research paper, drawing from our own and other computing instructors' experiences, we highlight common technical challenges faced by students in software engineering project-based learning (PjBL) and discuss ways in which instructors can support students in overcoming them so that motivation is summoned and sustained. Through the use of practical hands-on experiences, PjBL has been shown to be an effective educational approach. However, unless projects are intentionally designed and supported in a way that summons and sustains student motivation, PjBL is likely to fail to accomplish its goals. Several factors influence student motivation, including their perception of the project's value and how confident they are in their ability to complete it. In particular, challenges that students perceive as insurmountable during the project can significantly weaken their motivation. On the other hand, supporting students to overcome such hurdles can be troublesome, especially in large classes as well as classes with diversity in student backgrounds. To generalize from our own experience, we designed a questionnaire targeted at PjBL computing instructors that contained closed and open questions on technical challenges faced by students, support instructors provided to overcome such challenges, and lessons learned by instructors on the effectiveness of their support. A total of 47 responses were collected from instructors with diverse backgrounds in terms of courses taught, students' years, and class sizes. We categorized the technical challenges into three main categories, namely (a) challenges in installing and configuring software packaged tools, (b) lack of prerequisite knowledge, and (c) challenges while completing project tasks. In this paper, we present the survey results from the three categories of technical challenges, their frequencies, importance, and effective support strategies instructors use to alleviate them. © 2024 IEEE.

This research paper presents a novel algorithm for recommending colleges to students, which is based on both content and context filtering. The evaluation of the accuracy of content-based and context-based filtering algorithms was conducted on a sample size of N=10. The assessment of the sample size was conducted using GPower software, with a pre-test power of 0.8 and an alpha value of 0.05. The study has determined the mean accuracy of 83.96% for content-based filtering and 80.48% for context-based filtering. This paper also presents a comparison between the performance of content-based filtering and context-based filtering.

Most generic object detectors are mainly built for “standard” object detection tasks such as COCO [1] and PAS-CAL VOC [2]. They might not work well and/or efficiently on tasks of other domains consisting of images that are visually different from standard datasets. To this end, many advances have been focused on adapting a general-purposed object detector with limited domain-specific designs. However, designing a successful task-specific detector requires extraneous manual experiments and parameter tuning through trial and error. In this paper, we first propose and examine a fully-automatic pipeline to design a fully-specialized detector (FSD) which mainly incorporates a neural-architectural-searched model by exploring ideal network structures over the backbone and task-specific head. On the DeepLesion dataset, extensive results show that FSD can achieve 3.1 mAP gain while using approximately 40% fewer parameters on binary lesion detection task and improved the mAP by around 10% on multi-type lesion detection task via our region-aware graph modeling compared with existing general-purposed medical lesion detection networks.

WeNet is a multidisciplinary project aimed at introducing a platform capable of enhancing socially aware, diverseconscious, richer, and deeper social interactions. This study presents the integration and validation of a tutoring application, named SOS Tutoring UC, based on social interactions on the WeNet platform. The validation has encompassed both the system and the diversity-conscious matching algorithm. The experience reveals several relevant challenges for integrating vertical applications on the WeNet platform and underscores the pivotal role played by understanding diversity-conscious matching algorithms in the integration process. © 2023 IEEE.
