The emergence of personal mobile computing and ubiquitous wireless networks enables powerful field applications of video streaming, such as vision-enabled command centers for hazardous materials response. However, experience has repeatedly demonstrated both the fragility of the wireless networks and the insatiable demand for higher resolution and more video streams. In the wild, even the best streaming video mechanisms result in low-resolution, low-frame-rate video, in part because the motion of first-person mobile video (e.g., via a head-mounted camera) decimates temporal (inter-frame) compression. We introduce a visualization technique for displaying low-bit-rate first-person video that maintains the benefits of high resolution, while minimizing the problems typically associated with low frame rates. This technique has the unexpected benefit of eliminating the "Blaire Witch Project" effect-the nausea-inducing jumpiness typical of first-person video. We explore the features and benefits of the technique through both a field study involving hazardous waste disposal and a lab study of side-by-side comparisons with alternate methods. The technique was praised as a possible command center tool, and some of the participants in the lab study preferred our low-bitrate encoding technique to the full-frame, high resolution video that was used as a control

In this paper we present a super resolution Bayesian methodology for pansharpening of multispectral images which: a) incorporates prior knowledge on the expected characteristics of the multispectral images, b) uses the sensor characteristics to model the observation process of both panchromatic and multispectral images, c) includes information on the unknown parameters in the model, and d) allows for the estimation of both the parameters and the high resolution multispectral image. Using real data, the pansharpened multispectral images are compared with the images obtained by other parsharpening methods and their quality assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively.

In this paper we give an overview of the four TRECVID tasks submitted by COST292, European network of institutions in the area of semantic multimodal analysis and retrieval of digital video media. Initially, we present shot boundary evaluation method based on results merged using a confidence measure. The two SB detectors user here are presented, one of the Technical university of Delft and one of the laBRI, university of Bordeaux 1, followed by the description of the merging algorithm. The high-level feature extraction task comprises three separate systems. The first system, developed by the National Technical university of Athens (NTUA) utilises a set of MPEG-7 low-level descriptors and latent Semantic Analysis to detect the features. The second system, developed by Bilkent university, uses a Bayesian classifier trained with a "bag of subregions" for each keyframe. The third system by the Middle East Technical university (METU) exploits textual information in the video using character recognition methodology. The system submitted to the search task is an interactive retrieval application developed by Queen Mary, university of London, university of Zilina and ITI from Thessaloniki, combining basic retrieval functionalities in various modalities (i.e. visual, audio, textual) with a user interface supporting the submission of queries using any combination of the available retrieval tools and the accumulation of relevant retrieval results over all queries submitted by a single user during a specified time interval. Finally, the rushes task submission comprises a video summarisation and browsing system specifically designed to intuitively and efficiently presents rushes material in video production environment. This system is a result of joint work of university of Bristol, Technical university of Delft and laBRI, university of Bordeaux 1.

This paper addresses the problem of reconstructing the density of a scene from multiple projection images produced by modalities such as x-ray, electron microscopy, etc. where an image value is related to the integral of the scene density along a 3D line segment between a radiation source and a point on the image plane. While computed tomography (CT) addresses this problem when the absolute orientation of the image plane and radiation source directions are known, this paper addresses the problem when the orientations are unknown - it is akin to the structure-from-motion (SFM) problem when the extrinsic camera parameters are unknown. We study the problem within the context of reconstructing the density of protein macro-molecules in Cryogenic Electron Microscopy (cryo-EM), where images are very noisy and existing techniques use several thousands of images. In a non-degenerate configuration, the viewing planes corresponding to two projections, intersect in a line in 3D. Using the geometry of the imaging setup, it is possible to determine the projections of this 3D line on the two image planes. In turn, the problem can be formulated as a type of orthographic structure from motion from line correspondences where the line correspondences between two views are unreliable due to image noise. We formulate the task as the problem of denoising a correspondence matrix and present a Bayesian solution to it. Subsequently, the absolute orientation of each projection is determined followed by density reconstruction. We show results on cryo-EM images of proteins and compare our results to that of Electron Micrograph Analysis (EMAN) - a widely used reconstruction tool in cryo-EM.

We present a multiagent scheduling (MS) system to tackle the dedicated machine constraint in this paper. The dedicated machine constraint is one of the new issues of the photolithography machinery due to natural bias. Natural bias will impact the alignment of patterns between different photolithography layers. The dedicated machine constraint is the most important challenge to improve productivity and fulfill the request for customers in semiconductor manufacturing today. In this paper, the proposed MS system is based on a resource schedule and execution matrix (RSEM) and keeps the load balancing among photolithography machines during each scheduling step according to the current load among the photolithography machines in the production line. We describe the prototype system including the agents and the coordination strategies in the paper. We also demonstrate the simulation result that validated the proposed MS system.

In this paper, a novel 4 × 4 two-layer Butler matrix based on a broad-band two-layer slot-coupled directional coupler is presented and implemented at 5.8 GHz using coplanar waveguide technology. With the slot-coupled directional coupler, the proposed matrix was designed without using any crossovers as used in conventional Butler matrices, which leads to significant size reduction and loss minimization. To examine the performance of the proposed matrix, experimental prototypes of the multilayer directional coupler and the Butler matrix were fabricated and measured. Furthermore, a four-antenna array was also designed and fabricated at 5.8 GHz and then connected to the matrix to form a beamforming antenna system. As a result, four orthogonal beams at -45°, -15°, 15°, and 45° are produced. Measured results on the entire system agree well with the theoretical predictions, validating the proposed design. © 2006 IEEE.

The university of California, San Diego (UCSD), Division of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) partnered with J. Craig Venter Institute, and UCSD's Center for Earth Observations and Applications at Scripps Institution of Oceanography to create the Community Cyberinfrastructure for Advanced Marine Microbial Ecology Research and Analysis (CAMERA). Under this partnership, metagenomics research using CAMERA will analyze microbial genomic sequence data in the context of other microbial species, as well as in comparison to a variety of other "metadata" such as the chemical and physical conditions in which microbes are sampled. Once in place, CAMERA will enable researchers to connect their local laboratory PC clusters directly to the CAMERA database and tools resulting in a maximum 100-fold increase in bandwidth over current standards.

We propose a heuristic load balancing (LB) scheduling approach based on a resource schedule and execution matrix (RSEM) to tackle the dedicated machine constraint for the photolithography process in semiconductor manufacturing. The constraint of having a dedicated machine is one of the new challenges introduced in photolithography machinery due to natural bias. With this dedicated machine constraint, if we randomly schedule the wafer lots to arbitrary photolithography machines at the first photolithography stage, then the load of all photolithography machines might become unbalanced. However, many scheduling policies or modeling methods proposed by previous research for the semiconductor manufacturing production have not discussed this dedicated machine constraint. In this paper, along with providing the LB approach to the issue of the dedicated machine constraint, we also present a novel model-the representation and manipulation methods for the task patterns. The advantage of LB is to easily schedule the wafer lots by simple calculation on a two-dimensional matrix. We present the result of the simulations to validate our approach as well.
