There exist quite a few criteria for penalty-based model selection. Although they have various justifications for large sample problems, their performance under small or moderate sample size is unclear which hinders the development of model combination methods using the appropriate penalty term. In this paper, we assess the performance of seven model selection criteria based on linear regression models with unknown noise variance. We set the true data generation mechanism to be within the model set as well as outside the model set. In the latter case, soft model selection through multiple model fusion is proposed and its difference from Bayesian model averaging is highlighted. The penalty term used in each model selection criterion provides a natural link to estimate the model probability without assuming any prior knowledge of the unknown parameter. An important question is whether the estimated model probabilities are consistent when multiple models are fused for prediction or interpolation. We argue that strong consistency only holds under large sample regime while soft model selection can still be better than choosing a single model with small sample size. Our numerical results using different model selection criteria for polynomial fitting indicate that the conditional model estimator (CME) has the best performance in selecting the correct model order and fusing multiple models for prediction and interpolation. The minimum description length (MDL) based criteria are next to CME and outperform Bayesian information criterion (BIC) and Akaike information criterion (AIC) significantly.

In this paper, we investigate the performance of a multi-cell CDMA network by determining the maximum throughput that the network can achieve for a given grade-of-service requirement, quality-of-service requirement, network topology and call arrival rate profile. Our analysis is restricted to the reverse link and accounts for mobility of users between cells. A constrained nonlinear optimization problem is formulated that maximizes the network throughput subject to upper bounds on the blocking probabilities and a lower bound on the bit energy to interference ratio. The goal is to optimize the usage of network resources, provide consistent grade-of-service for all the cells in the network, and maintain a pre-specified quality-of-service. The solution to the optimization problem yields the maximum network throughput as well as the maximum number of calls that should be admitted in each cell for a given topology and call arrival rate profile. Our optimization algorithm yields significantly higher throughput compared with traditional call admission schemes.

In this paper, a robust nonlinear controller is proposed for trajectory tracking of underwater vehicle-manipulator systems (UVMS). The controller is non-adaptive and of sliding mode type, and is designed based on the decentralized form of the dynamics of UVMS. It has the advantages of simplicity, robustness, precise performance, and ease of implementation. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the controller, several simulations using a five degrees of freedom UVMS are conducted. The results show that the proposed controller provides high performance of trajectory tracking in the presence of uncertainties about the dynamics and hydrodynamic disturbances

In this paper we present Energy Aware Random Asynchronous Wakeup (RAW-E), a novel crosslayer power management and routing protocol for heterogeneous wireless sensor and actor networks. RAW-E is an extension of our previously presented Random Asynchronous Wakeup (RAW), a power saving technique for sensor networks that has been shown to reduce energy consumption without significantly affecting the latency or connectivity of the network. RAW-E is a distributed, randomized algorithm where nodes make local decisions on whether to sleep, or to be active based on the energy level of its neighbors. The primary result of RAW-E is the reduction of energy disparity among sensor nodes. Therefore, while the energy reduction is spread uniformly among nodes, the life of network connectivity is prolonged. RAW-E is scalable to the change in network size, node type, node density and topology. RAW-E accommodates seamlessly such network changes, including the presence of actors in heterogeneous sensor networks. RAW-E takes advantage of actor nodes, and uses their resources when possible, thus reducing the energy consumption of sensor nodes. The performance of our protocol remains very good even in large networks, and it scales with density. Previously we have shown by analysis and simulations that RAW improves communication latency and system lifetime compared to current schemes. Through simulation evaluations, we show that RAW-E adds to those features the improvement on energy consumption and extension of connectivity life for heterogeneous sensor and actor networks

The problem of feature-based surface reconstruction is considered in this paper. Our main contribution is the ability to handle visibility constraints, obtained from the projections of points, curves and silhouettes, in the surface fitting process. While traditional methods often ignore such information, we show that visibility constraints not only give better initial surface estimates and faster convergence, but also provide an important cue for determining surface topology. The problem is cast as a variational problem with constraints within the level set framework. It is shown how to evolve the surface without violating the visibility constraints using methods from variational calculus. Applications of the theory are detailed for a number of important cases of geometric primitives: points, curves and visual hulls. Several experiments on real image sequences are given to demonstrate the performance of the approach.

In this paper, we investigate a new type of hybrid element to realize a human-friendly support device. The element is a flexible actuator (called Sponge Core Soft Rubber Actuator) and its structure is a soft mechanism in which a sponge rubber is covered with silicone rubber. In addition to its actuation capability, the element can estimate external forces by making use of the relation between inner pressure and external force. Therefore, the element can be used as a hybrid element that has both actuator and force sensor functions. This paper discusses the hybrid element design, actuator characteristics, and force control and sensing abilities of the element. Experimental results are presented to illustrate the practical effectiveness of the proposed hybrid element.

In this paper we study and evaluate the influence of the choice of a particular reference volume as the electrophysiological atlas on the accuracy of the automatic predictions of optimal points for deep brain stimulator (DBS) implants. We refer to an electrophysiological atlas as a spatial map of electrophysiological information such as micro electrode recordings (MER), stimulation parameters, final implants positions, etc., which are acquired for each patient and then mapped onto a single reference volume using registration algorithms. An atlas-based prediction of the optimal point for a DBS surgery is made by registering a patient's image volume to that reference volume, that is, by computing a correct coordinate mapping between the two;and then by projecting the optimal point from the atlas to the patient using the transformation from the registration algorithm. Different atlases, as well as different parameterizations of the registration algorithm, lead to different and somewhat independent atlas-based predictions. We show how the use of multiple reference volumes can improve the accuracy of prediction by combining the predictions from the multiple reference volumes weighted by the accuracy of the non-rigid registration between each of the corresponding atlases and the patient volume. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Unlike deterministic testing, it is unnecessary for scan-based BIST to apply a complete test vector into the circuit via the scan chains. A new scan-based BIST scheme is proposed by properly controlling the test signals of the scan chains. Different weighted random signals are assigned to the test signals of different scan chains. In the proposed test scheme, capture cycles can be inserted at any clock cycle. Testability calculation procedure according to the proposed testing scheme is presented. Techniques for selecting different weights on the test signals of the scan chains are also proposed. Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the test effectiveness of scan-based BIST greatly, and most circuits can reach complete fault coverage or very close to complete fault coverage.

The authors presented an elliptic free space solver that offers vastly improved performance over a previous variant of the algorithm. Processors of an IBM SP system were currently scaled up to 1024, and it is planned to port the solver to Blue Gene/L. The solver employs a method of local corrections that avoids the need for costly communication, while retaining parallel scalability of the method. Communication costs are generally small: 25 percent of the total running time or less for runs on up to 512 processors and 37 percent of the total time on 1024 processors. The numerical overheads incurred are independent of the number of processors for a wide range of problem sizes. The solver currently handles infinite-domain (free space) boundary conditions, but may be reformulated to accommodate other kinds of boundary conditions as well.
