This paper examines the area, power, performance, and design issues for the on-chip interconnects on a chip multiprocessor, attempting to present a comprehensive view of a class of interconnect architectures. It shows that the design choices for the interconnect have significant effect on the rest of the chip, potentially consuming a significant fraction of the real estate and power budget. This research shows that designs that treat interconnect as an entity that can be independently architected and optimized would not arrive at the best multi-core design. Several examples are presented showing the need for careful co-design. For instance, increasing interconnect bandwidth requires area that then constrains the number of cores or cache sizes, and does not necessarily increase performance. Also, shared level-2 caches become significantly less attractive when the overhead of the resulting crossbar is accounted for. A hierarchical bus structure is examined which negates some of the performance costs of the assumed base-line architecture.

The purpose of admission control is to support the quality of service (QoS) demands of real time applications via resource reservation. In order to deal with admission control for high-speed networks, in a previous work we proposed a fuzzy based admission control scheme, which is flexible and adaptive and makes an intelligent decision for call acceptance. In the previous work, we considered only two indicators for QoS and congestion control. However, for multimedia applications more QoS and CC parameters should be considered. In this paper, we extend our previous work by proposing two additional schemes, which are integrated in the previous scheme. The new scheme is called fuzzy admission control for multimedia applications (MFAC). In this paper, we introduce the conventional admission control schemes and give some simulation results of their performance. We explain the proposed MFAC scheme and present the design of fuzzy QoS controller (FQC) and Fuzzy congestion controller (FCC). The performance of the new scheme and the comparison with conventional ones is for the future work.

Time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy of ferromagnetic InMnAs reveals two distinct demagnetization processes—fast (<1 ps) and slow (∼100 ps). Both components diminish with increasing temperature and are absent above the Curie temperature. The fast component rapidly grows with pump power and saturates at high fluences (>10 mJ/cm2); the saturation value indicates a complete quenching of ferromagnetism on a subpicosecond time scale. We attribute this fast dynamics to spin heating through p−d exchange interaction between photocarriers and Mn ions, while the ∼100 ps component is interpreted as spin-lattice relaxation.

Due to the opportunities provided by the Internet, more and more people are taking advantage of distance learning courses and during the last few years enormous research efforts have been dedicated to the development of distance learning systems. So far, many e-learning systems are proposed and used practically. However, in these systems the e-learning completion rate is about 30 percents. One of the reasons is the low study desire when the learner studies the learning materials. In this research, we propose an e-learning system, which includes three subsystems: the learning subsystem, learner support subsystem, and teacher support subsystem. The learning subsystem improves the learners study desire. The learner support subsystem supports the learner during the study, and the teacher support subsystem support the teacher to get the learner's study state. In the future work, we would like to add other functions to improve more the system performance.

Networks of today are passing through a rapid evolution. The broadband ISDN (B-ISDN), which offers a wide variety of telecommunication services, is considered to be a powerful future network, which can satisfy the demands of users and the network providers. Even the network speed is increased very fast and by using DWDM technology the Terabit/s speed is possible in the near future, the costumers request are increasing and new multimedia applications which need large bandwidth will appear in the future. For this reason control of user traffic will be very important to keep the quality of service (QoS) of other already established connections by detecting violations of negotiated parameters and taking appropriate actions. In this paper we propose a fuzzy policing mechanism (FPM) for multimedia applications. We consider the case of still picture source control. The performance evaluation via simulation shows that the FPM efficiently controls the mean cell rate of the still picture source. We will extend this study for other multimedia applications such as video sources.

in this paper a new design for controlling dynamical systems has been applied to buck converters driven with a PWM centered pulse and (Zero Average Dynamics) ZAD-strategy. Chaotic operation has been stabilized with the so-called Fixed Point Induced Control (FPIC) technique. Also, the same converter with delay, whose 1-periodic orbit is always unstable, has been stabilized. Simulations are compared with the TDAS stabilization technique. Once a 1-periodic orbit has been stabilized, the dynamics shows the same characteristics and advantages of the ZAD design, such as robustness, fixed switching frequency (with zero average on the sliding surface) and a low output error. In this paper we present two methods for controlling limit cycles in smooth planar systems making use of the theory of nonsmooth bifurcations. They correspond to two novel switching control strategies for reducing the amplitude of undesired limit cycles in autonomous smooth systems. The switching controller is designed by using the theory of nonsmooth bifurcations. By designing an appropriate switching controller, the occurrence of a corner-sliding bifurcation or a grazing-sliding bifurcation is induced on the system and the amplitude of the target limit cycle is controlled. The switching control action is only started when the system trajectories enter an appropriately defined region in phase space. This technique is illustrated through a representative example.

ThesearetheproceedingsoftheRoboCup2004Symposium,heldattheInstituto Superior T´ ecnico, in Lisbon, Portugal in conjunction with the RoboCup c- petition. The papers presented here document the many innovations in robotics that result from RoboCup. A problem in any branch of science or engineering is how to devise tests that can provide objective comparisons between alt- native methods. In recent years, competitive engineering challenges have been established to motivate researchers to tackle di?cult problems while providing a framework for the comparison of results. RoboCup was one of the ?rst such competitions and has been a model for the organization of challenges foll- ing sound scienti?c principles. In addition to the competition, the associated symposium provides a forum for researchers to present refereed papers. But, for RoboCup, the symposium has the greater goal of encouraging the exchange of ideas between teams so that the competition, as a whole, progresses from year to year and strengthens its contribution to robotics. One hundred and eighteen papers were submitted to the Symposium. Each paper was reviewed by at least two international referees; 30 papers were - cepted for presentation at the Symposium as full papers and a further 38 were accepted for poster presentation. The quality of the Symposium could not be maintained without the support of the authors and the generous assistance of the referees.

Discrete nonlinear optical systems exhibit unique properties unknown from wave propagation in bulk materials. Among them are the possibilities to form highly localized discrete solitons and the ability of a wide beam to propagate without diffraction and modulational instability across the array. The interaction between a highly localized discrete soliton and a non-diffracting beam has potential applications for all optical routing and switching. We present our results on the experimental investigation of this kind of beam interactions in a one-dimensional AlGaAs array at a wavelength of 1550 nm. A discrete soliton, almost completely confined to a single waveguide, was excited and the interaction with a wide beam of the same or orthogonal polarization was studied. We confirmed that the wide beam is able to drag the soliton over multiple waveguides towards itself while the soliton is able to maintain its original, highly confined shape. The outcome of the coherent interaction depends on the power of the wide beam and the relative phase between the two beams. This phase-dependence is due to linear interference in the case of co-polarized beams and due to four-wave mixing for orthogonally polarized beams.

Two grown‐in Ga interstitial (Gai) defects in Ga(Al)NP are identified by optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR), from the characteristic hyperfine (HF) structure associated with the nuclear spin I=3/2 of the Gai. Both defects are concluded to be Gai‐related complexes. Effects of Al and N compositions on the HF structure shed light on local surrounding of the Gai.
