A major justification for the agile class of software processes is that customer requirements often change substantially during development, with the result that developers must work with a ever-changing specification. The best way of dealing with this, it is claimed, is a process including adaptive and iterative steps allowing the code under development to change to meet an evolving requirement. In this paper, we use quantitative process data to argue that the deliberate development of an evolvable design, based upon extensions and variations to the requirements, and the generality derivable from the implemented system, may provide agility within a more traditional development, showing that the two concepts are interchangeable, to some extent. In doing so, the paper draws upon our joint work on evolvable systems, and upon a concept developed by one of us in the 1980's, "The Contraction of Generality", to illustrate the alternatives. There have been many approaches of data sharing in e-businesses, attempting at mapping each field at the source to its corresponding field at the target. These approaches eliminate the need for deriving the global schema and hence eliminate a substantial overhead. But, the approaches work out well only when both the source and the target databases have approximately the same content. Moreover, if some concepts of source do not have the counterpart fields in the target then the mapping will lose the concepts. This problem will be further aggregated by the mapping compositions and the large size of the databases. In this paper, we propose a framework to alleviate the interoperability problem.

Geostationary satellite links exhibit a number of characteristics that can severely impact the performance of TCP. Over the years, a lot of research has been performed to identify the causes of these performance related problems. Multiple techniques that can reduce the affects of the problems have been identified, however a solution to the overall problem does not appear to currently exist. This paper details work in progress to continue research in this field. We start by providing a brief background on geostationary satellite links and TCP, before discussing each of the main factors that impact TCP performance. Previous research is discussed and the findings summarised. Finally, a number of possible solutions are presented.

Several discriminate functions for predicting core promoters that based on the potential cooperation between transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) are discussed. It is demonstrated that the promoter predicting accuracy is improved when the cooperation among TFBSs is taken into consideration. The core promoter region of a newly discovered gene CKLFSF1 is predicted to locate more than 1.5 kb far away from the 5' end of the transcript and in the last intron of its upstream gene, which is experimentally confirmed later. The core promoters of 3402 human RefSeq sequences, obtained by extending the mRNAs in human genome sequences, are predicted by our algorithm, and there are about 60% of the predicted core promoters locating within the ± 500 bp region relative to the annotated transcription start site.
