This work proposes a user-oriented approach as a basis for proper information visualization in the production automation area. A total consideration of the user consists of analyzing his tasks, context and profile. In order to implement this in the visualization process, an intelligent framework that is based on a multi agent system is developed. The advantage is that the tasks can be distributed to several small and manageable agents. The long term objective is to develop a working platform for the user-oriented information visualization.

Particle filtering is a very popular technique for sequential state estimation problem. However its convergence greatly depends on the balance between the number of particles/hypotheses and the fitness of the dynamic model. In particular, in cases where the dynamics are complex or poorly modeled, thousands of particles are usually required for real applications. This paper presents a hybrid sampling solution that combines the sampling in the image feature space and in the state space via RANSAC and particle filtering, respectively. We show that the number of particles can be reduced to dozens for a full 3D tracking problem which contains considerable noise of different types. For unexpected motions, a specific set of dynamics may not exist, but it is avoided in our algorithm. The theoretical convergence proof [1, 3] for particle filtering when integrating RANSAC is difficult, but we address this problem by analyzing the likelihood distribution of particles from a real tracking example. The sampling efficiency (on the more likely areas) is much higher by the use of RANSAC. We also discuss the tracking quality measurement in the sense of entropy or statistical testing. The algorithm has been applied to the problem of 3D face pose tracking with changing moderate or intense expressions. We demonstrate the validity of our approach with several video sequences acquired in an unstructured environment.

Within the software development process, reuse at the requirements level has become an increasingly more compelling notion. Following a human-centric approach, this work focuses on both requirements and design solution reuse using a design knowledge repository. In recent years, many improvements have been made to increase reuse through design knowledge repositories, but retrieval of knowledge in the context of design activities continues to be a formidable challenge. We propose a new system, called CERVi, to browse a repository through visualization by exploiting relationships between units of knowledge (in our case, claims). These relationships are key to finding the most appropriate reusable knowledge based on design conditions. Testing shows that CERVi enhances the design knowledge selection process and helps users proceed through structured design decision making. Our approach would be most useful to those interested in unlocking the potential of design knowledge reuse.
We describe the design of a modular system for untethered real-time kinematic motion capture using sensors with inertial measuring units (IMUs). Our system is comprised of a set of small and lightweight sensors. Each ...

The goal of this panel is to discuss theoretical and methodological approaches that may inform and support the design of temporal aspects of interactive systems. Time Design is an emerging research and development domain that emphasizes the functional, causal role of time in human control behavior. It draws on a diverse literature on time in cognitive psychology, psychophysics, sociology, computerscience, engineering, human Factors and HCI. Relevant research domains include heuristics and biases in temporal decisions, temporal aspects of human-automation interaction, planning and scheduling, visualisation of temporal information, and the timing of alarms and interruptions.

Software architects have techniques to deal with many quality attributes such as performance, reliability, and maintainability. Usability, however, has traditionally been concerned primarily with presentation and not been a concern of software architects beyond separating the user interface from the remainder of the application. In this paper, we present usability-supporting architectural patterns. Each pattern describes a usability concern that is not supported by separation alone. For each concern, a usability-supporting architectural pattern provides the forces from the characteristics of the task and environment, the human, and the state of the software to motivate an implementation independent solution cast in terms of the responsibilities that must be fulfilled to satisfy the forces. Furthermore, each pattern includes a sample solution implemented in the context of an overriding separation based pattern such as J2EE Model View Controller.
We seek to improve the experience of using pen computing devices by augmenting them with haptic, tactile feedback displays. We present the design of the haptic display for pen computers, and explore interaction techni...

Interviews of twenty-six Industrial Engineering students and graduates were conducted during the first year of a three year study of the unexpected attainment of gender parity in the School of Industrial Engineering at the University of Oklahoma (OU). An analysis of the pattern of participant responses gives insight into industrial engineering (IE) student perceptions of IE. The perceptions were grouped into three broad themes: Career Profile, Discipline Profile, and Discipline Meta-Profile. The Career Profile includes the availability of multiple career paths and flexible careers in this discipline in addition to the potential for the attainment of status through entry into management. People-oriented, broad, and systems-oriented are terms that were used to describe the Discipline Profile. Discipline Meta-Profile is used to describe the participant's perception of other people's perceptions of industrial engineering (i.e. what IE students think other people think). These participants felt that other engineers think of IE as easy, or "imaginary" engineering. The participants also thought that the discipline is invisible, even to other engineers. While the meta-perception of IE might seem to be problematic for the discipline, many of the participants reject the meta-perception. Some participants recognized that IE's focus on people and systems is simply different than other engineering disciplines, not necessarily easier. Other participants felt the potential to enter into management outweighed the discipline meta-perception. One student summarized the response particularly well when he noted that IE is "inviteful" engineering.

In this paper, low-complexity block-constrained trellis coded quantization (BC-TCQ) structures are introduced, and a predictive BC-TCQ encoding method is developed for quantization of line spectrum frequencies (LSF) parameters for wideband speech coding applications. The performance is compared to the linear predictive coding (LPC) vector quantizers used in the AMR-WB (ITUG.722.2) speech coding standard, demonstrating reduction in spectral distortion and significant reduction in encoding complexity.
