Recently, constrained Markov Bayesian polynomial (CMBP) has been proposed as a data-driven rule-based model for dialog state tracking (DST). CMBP is an approach to bridge rule-based models and statistical models. Recurrent Polynomial Network (RPN) is a recent statistical framework taking advantages of rulebased models and can achieve state-ofthe-art performance on the data corpora of DSTC-3, outperforming all submitted trackers in DSTC-3 including RNN. It is widely acknowledged that SLU's reliability influences tracker's performance greatly, especially in cases where the training SLU is poorly matched to the testing SLU. In this paper, this effect is analyzed in detail for RPN. Experiments show that RPN's tracking result is consistently the best compared to rule-based and statistical models investigated on different SLUs including mismatched ones and demonstrate RPN's is very robust to mismatched semantic parsers. © 2015 Association for Computational Linguistics.

For many years, the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) in Australia has been under serious threat of rapid decline due to a number of factors including heat stress events and the crown-of-thorn sea star. human behaviour can directly and indirectly contribute to these factors, for example, through increased water and carbon footprints. In this paper, we illustrate the potential benefit of a large-scale mixed reality visualisation methodology in communicating complex GBR data, including exploring the impact of individual factors on the coral reef ecosystem. We present an immersive interactive visualisation, combining tiled displays (PerceptuWall) and head-mounted displays (Oculus DK2, Google Cardboard), that dynamically presents individualised coral damage information based on viewers' footprint inputs. The immersive tour provides a use-case for promoting understanding of how human behaviour impacts on GBR health by linking individual or regional actions to global outcomes, with the additional advantage of capturing the public's attention for immersive technologies.

We present a movable spatial augmented reality (SAR) system that can be easily installed in a user workspace. The proposed system aims to dynamically cover a wider projection area using a portable projector attached to a simple robotic device. It has a clear advantage than a conventional SAR scenario where, for example, a projector should be installe1d with a fixed projection area in the workspace. In the previous research [1], we proposed a data-driven kinematic control method for a movable SAR system. This method targets a SAR system integrated with a user-created robotic (UCR) device where an explicit kinematic configuration such as CAD model is unavailable. Our contribution in this paper is to show the feasibility of the data-driven control method by developing a practical application where dynamic change of projection area matters. We outline the control method and demonstrate an assembly guide example using a casually installed movable SAR system.

Engaging children in play for wellbeing is coming to prominence in HCI as the community increasingly engages with issues to do with health, care and therapy. To date, research in this area has primarily focused on engaging children with special needs or who suffer from mental health problems in organized play to improve their self-efficacy or support therapeutic treatment. However, play could be more broadly beneficial for all children and their wellbeing. This workshop aims to build an interdisciplinary community of researchers, designers, and practitioners to share and discuss their work. Additionally, it seeks to explore the interaction between play and wellbeing in the context of interaction design and children and to identify directions for future research.

Gaussian processes reinforcement learning provides an appealing framework for training the dialogue policy as it takes into account correlations of the objective function given different dialogue belief states, which can significantly speed up the learning. These correlations are modelled by the kernel function which may depend on hyper-parameters. So far, for real-world dialogue systems the hyperparameters have been hand-tuned, relying on the designer to adjust the correlations, or simple non-parametrised kernel functions have been used instead. Here, we examine different kernel structures and show that it is possible to optimise the hyperparameters from data yielding improved performance of the resulting dialogue policy. We confirm this in a real user trial. © 2015 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Globalization of markets means that interactive systems need to be usable and provide positive user experience (UX) to users in many different cultures. There is an increasing realization that systems may need to be localized to different cultures, but less realization that methods used to work with users also need to be localized. We present two case studies which investigate cultural differences in users’ interpretation of and reactions to methods used to elicit usability and UX information. The first case study investigated the use of photos and sketches with Nigerian and Anglo-Celtic participants, the second investigated the use of three different question types, Likert items, sentence completion questions and open-ended questions with Chinese and British participants. Conclusions are drawn for conducting crosscultural user research. © Springer India 2015.
