This paper presents an approach to text recognition in natural scene images. The main contribution of this paper is the efficient exploitation of colour information for the identification of text regions in the presence of surrounding noise. We propose a pipeline of image processing operations involving the bilateral regression for the identification of characters in the images. A pre-processing step has been proposed to increase the performance of bilateral regression based character identification. The proposed method segments the characters so well that a combination of an off the shelf feature representation and classification technique achieves state-of-the-art character recognition performance. The capability of the framework is further extended for word recognition where a basic string matching criterion is applied to match recognized strings against a lexicon to eliminate errors that occur due to inaccuracies in character classification. We performed extensive experiments to evaluate our method on challenging datasets (Chars74K, ICDAR03, ICDAR11 and SVT) and results show that the proposed method superseded the existing state-of-the-art techniques. © 2014. A major problem in research on Textual Entailment (TE) is the high implementation effort for TE systems. Recently, interoperable standards for annotation and preprocessing have been proposed. In contrast, the algorithmic level remains unstandardized, which makes component re-use in this area very difficult in practice. In this paper, we introduce multi-level alignments as a central, powerful representation for TE algorithms that encourages modular, reusable, multilingual algorithm development. We demonstrate that a pilot open-source implementation of multi-level alignment with minimal features competes with state-of-theart open-source TE engines in three languages.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic emissions of cell phones as possibly carcinogenic to humans [1] and suggests the use of hands-free devices such as earphones to reduce direct exposure of the brain to such emissions. In this paper, we present the design of a mobile application that exploits persuasive principles to encourage the use of earphones during cell phone calls. We propose different notifications and visualizations aimed at informing the user about her behavior with respect to earphone use and discuss the results of a user study that was aimed at investigating aspects such as understandability, emotional impact, and perceived usefulness of the proposed solutions. Results of the study are used to inform the design of the application. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first investigation of persuasive technologies applied to the reduction of user's exposure to cell phone RF emissions. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Technology for Older People: A Critical Review

We will present the results of a critical review of research published in a range of peer-reviewed conferences in the period 2005 - 2012 on the use of technology to support older people. We explore what problems faced by older people are being addressed by the research;whether the research is motivated by user needs;the methodologies used;the levels of target user involvement in the research;and the outcomes achieved. Eight major topics of research have been identified: mobility and wayfinding;communication and social interaction;interaction with technology;using the web;access to and exploration of information;education;support for daily living;and games and play. In addition, we have categorized the research into four main types: research that proposes technologies for older people;research to understand the use of technology by older people and their attitudes to technology;research on guidelines, standards or other information to support developers and researchers;and research that on methodologies for working with older people in the development of new technological solutions. Important gaps and weaknesses in the current research portfolio are explored. The review will provide an overview of the state of the art of technologies for promoting independent living and wellbeing of older people, which should be useful for researchers, developers and practitioners in the field. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Graph-based knowledge representation is a hot topic for some years and still has a lot of research potential, particularly in the advancement in the application of graph-theory for creating benefits in the biomedical domain. Graphs are most powerful tools to map structures within a given data set and to recognize relationships between specific data objects. Many advantages of graph-based data structures can be found in the applicability of methods from network analysis, topology and data mining (e.g. small-world phenomenon, cluster analysis). In this paper we present the state-of-the-art in graph-based approaches for multi-touch interaction on mobile devices and we highlight some open problems to stimulate further research and future developments. This is particularly important in the medical domain, as a conceptual graph analysis may provide novel insights on hidden patterns in data, hence support interactive knowledge discovery. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Individuals who suffer anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury are at higher risk of developing knee osteoarthritis (OA) and almost 50% display symptoms 10-20 years post injury. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) often does not protect against knee OA development. Accordingly, a multiscale formulation for data-driven prognosis (DDP) of post-ACLR is developed. Unlike traditional predictive strategies that require controlled off-line measurements or 'training' for determination of constitutive parameters to derive the transitional statistics, the proposed DDP algorithm relies solely on in situ measurements. The proposed DDP scheme is capable of predicting onset of instabilities. As the need for off-line testing (or training) is obviated, it can be easily implemented for ACLR, where such controlled a priori testing is almost impossible to conduct. The DDP algorithm facilitates hierarchical handling of the large dataset and can assess the state of recovery in post-ACLR conditions based on data collected from stair ascent and descent exercises of subjects. The DDP algorithm identifies inefficient knee varus motion and knee rotation as primary difficulties experienced by some of the post-ACLR population. In such cases, levels of energy dissipation rate at the knee, and its fluctuation may be used as measures for assessing progress after ACL reconstruction. © 2015 The Author(s) Published by the Royal Society. Nowadays, we are witnessing a paradigm shift from traditional monolithic software systems to distributed solutions where the whole computation is partitioned among various modules that can be also located in different geographic locations. Such a change has been surely fostered by the continuous development of the network infrastructures but, more effectively, by the need to easily access information distributed almost everywhere on the planet. In this context the Service Oriented Computing (SOC) has emerged as one of the leading approaches for both the design and implementation of distributed applications. The key concepts of this paradigm are the idea of service, an independent software module that performs certain operations, and the possibility to seamlessly combine such modules in order to offer more sophisticated functionalities. In this paper, after analyzing the main characteristics that made the SOC paradigm a so widespread solution to create a framework for application-to-application interaction, we discuss, as a concrete use case, the development of a software system aimed at helping farmers in Sri Lanka to improve the quality of their cultivations and related earnings.

Verb errors are one of the most common grammar errors made by non-native writers of English. This work especially focus on an important type of verb usage errors, subject-verb agreement for the third person singular forms, which has a high proportion in errors made by non-native English learners. Existing work has not given a satisfied solution for this task, in which those using supervised learning method usually fail to output good enough performance, and rule-based methods depend on advanced linguistic resources such as syntactic parsers. In this paper, we propose a rule-based method to detect and correct the concerned errors. The proposed method relies on a series of rules to automatically locate subject and predicate in four types of sentences. The evaluation shows that the proposed method gives state-of-The-Art performance with quite limited linguistic resources.

Alternative systems ranging from self-organized skill sharing to alternative micro-economies have been critical channels of community engagement and bonding. Technology is increasingly playing a role in the way people connect to these services at the (hyper)local level. While there has been considerable research on designing technology to support conventional, established systems of community organization and governance;mobile and ubiquitous technologies offer strong potential for alternative systems to be established in the local level. Do It Yourself (DIY) and maker movements are enabling grassroots activist groups to develop their own technologies or to hack existing tools to support bottom-up systems of self-organization, democracy and commerce. Based on these trends and the recent worldwide economic, political and societal crisis, this workshop will bring together researchers, practitioners and activists to re-envision how HCI tools can support alternative systems of local civic engagement.

In this paper, a two-level parallel spatial hashing method is presented for real-time collision detection of deformable objects based on modern GPU architecture. The second-level of spatial hashing is used to improve the culling efficiency. Moreover, a novel encoding method on GPU is proposed to compensate the inflexibility of the GPU memory system. It can efficiently determine the colliding pairs of primitives between deformable objects. The experimental results show that our method can perform high culling efficiency with low memory cost. © The Eurographics Association 2014.
