Behavioral researchers code video to extract systematic meaning from subtle human actions and emotions. While this has traditionally been done by analysts within a research group, recent methods have leveraged online crowds to massively parallelize this task and reduce the time required from days to seconds. However, using the crowd to code video increases the risk that private information will be disclosed because workers who have not been vetted will view the video data in order to code it. In this Work-in-Progress, we discuss techniques for maintaining privacy when using Glance to code video and present initial experimental evidence to support them. © HCOMP 2014. All rights reserved.

A recent body of work has demonstrated that the incremental presentations of linguistic search cues can speed up visual processing in conjunctive visual search. In this paper, we investigate different processing configurations using a real-time embodied computational model and demonstrate that, different from previous hypotheses, the same incremental processing configuration can explain all experimental conditions. © 2014 Proceedings of the 36th Annual Meeting of the Cognitive science Society, CogSci 2014. There are many sets of guidelines concerning the accessibility of the web for older adults, but little empirical evidence from studies with older people to support their recommendations. In addition, all the recommendations apply to text in languages using the Latin alphabet. This study investigated the effects of text color and background color on the performance and preferences of younger and older adults on webpages in the Thai language. There were 18 Thai younger participants (19 - 29 years) and 18 Thai older participants (59 - 70 years). There were three combinations of text color and color (black text on white background, white text on black background, and sepia text on off-white background). The text and background color combinations failed to have any significant effects on the performance measures of task completion rate or time spent skim reading webpages. However, for the preference measure, there was a significant difference between combinations of text and background color but no differences between the age groups. There was also a significant interaction between combinations of text and background color and age group. These results form an useful basis for web design guidelines for Thai websites for text and background color for both younger and older users. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

In this paper, we propose a prototype of machine-to-machine interaction system using a single RGBD camera. Based on the 3D arm pointing and tracking algorithm, system enables user to select multiple objects using their two arms, without infrared remote controller and wireless transmitter. A fast gesture recognition method is used to identify the instruction assignment for the target objects. The system consists of three modules, including image capturing module, 3D arm pointing and target tracking module, and interaction module. The image capture module use the RGBD camera installed behind of user to capture the arm parameters in real-world space. The pointing and tracking algorithm is referred to the environmental information to establish the master and slave objects. For interaction module, the command gesture is determined by the gesture recognition, interacting with target devices by the decoded instruction. Finally, system generates a control signal for triggering the master object to communicate with the slave object according to the fetched the instruction. © Springer science+Business Media Dordrecht 2014.

The wealth of resources online has empowered individuals and businesses with an unprecedented volume of information to aid in decision making processes. However, finding the many details needed for a non-trivial decision can be very labor-intensive. We present AskSheet, a general system that leverages human computation to acquire the inputs to an arbitrary decision spreadsheet provided by the user. The key innovation is the ability to prioritize the inputs by analyzing the user's spreadsheet formulas to calculate value of information for each of the blanks. By directing workers to find the details that impact the end result most, it results in a conclusive decision without gathering all of the inputs. Copyright © 2014 ACM.

The case study presented in this paper aimed at discovering opportunities for ambient intelligence and new interaction methods for a future remote crane-operating environment. The theoretical objective was to carry out an experience-driven research project in an industrial work context, and the practical objective was to create and evaluate a future oriented science fiction prototype. The work was carried out in close co-operation with an industrial partner who was a domain expert in the field of crane industry. The aim was to focus on clearly defined user experience goals to which the industrial partner committed. The consequent immediate objective was to focus on two explicit experiences relating to 'Feeling of being motivated' and to 'Sense of community' that were placed at the core of the design investigations. These experiences were deliberated into a science fiction prototype entitled 'Remote operator's day in a future control centre'. The science fiction prototype was further introduced to users by twofold means: as a plain, simple short story and through an interactive experience path. The main contribution of the paper is to demonstrate how an emerging technology research of a new domain may employ science fiction prototyping method as a primary means of experience design investigations.

Three-dimensional point clouds are generated by devices such as laser scanners and depth cameras, but their output is a set of unstructured, unlabeled points. Many scenarios require users to identify parts of the point cloud through manual annotation. Inspired by the current generation of “natural user interface” technologies, we present Slice-n-Swipe, a technique for 3D point cloud annotation based on free-hand gesture input. The technique is based on a chef's knife metaphor, and uses progressive refinement to allow the user to specify the points of interest. We demonstrate the Slice-n-Swipe concept with a prototype using the Leap Motion Controller for free-hand gesture input and a 3D mouse for virtual camera control.

With the emergence of interest in the humancomputer symbiosis al so rises the need to find input systems adequate to this paradigm The present research aims to compare three different input systems during the interaction with virtual objects in a wide, immersive mixedreality environment The com mon interaction via keyboard and mouse is compared with two types of interaction mediated by gestural inputs Specifically, we compared the performance and the user experience of participants interacting with a virtual 3D model of a human brain either with keyboard/mouse, or with two different motion sensing devices to input commands: the Microsoft Kinect360 and the KinectOne The results seem to suggest that, although participants showed a better efficiency using the keyboard/mouse, in a high immersive environment, a input system that exploits gestures and body movements without requiring the use of any physical artifact, seems to be the preferred one to use © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.
