Automatic motion estimation of multiple depth cameras has remained a challenging topic in computer vision due to its reliance on the image correspondence problem. In this paper, spherical objects are employed to estimate motion parameters between multiple depth cameras. We move a sphere several times in the common view of depth cameras. We fit the spherical point clouds to get the sphere centers in each depth camera system, and then introduce a factorization based approach to estimate motions between the depth cameras. Both simulated and real experiments show the robustness and effectiveness of our method. © 2014 IEEE.

Driven by large industry investments, developments of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies including unobtrusive sensors, actuators and novel display devices are rapidly progressing. Realism and interactivity have been postulated as crucial aspects of immersive VR since the naissance of the concept. However, today's VR still falls short from creating real life-like experiences in many regards. This holds particularly true when introducing the "social dimension"into the virtual worlds. Apparently, creating convincing virtual selves and virtual others and conveying meaningful and appropriate social behavior still is an open challenge for future VR. This challenge implies both, technical aspects, such as the real-time capacities of the systems, but also psychological aspects, such as the dynamics of human communication. Our knowledge of VR systems is still fragmented with regard to social cognition, although the social dimension is crucial when aiming at autonomous agents with a certain social background intelligence. It can be questioned though whether a perfect copy of real life interactions is a realistic or even meaningful goal of social VR development at this stage. Taking into consideration the specific strengths and weaknesses of humans and machines, we propose a conceptual turn in social VR which focuses on what we call "hybrid avatar-agent systems". Such systems are required to generate i) avatar mediated interactions between real humans, taking advantage of their social intuitions and flexible communicative skills and ii) an artificial social intelligence (AIS) which monitors, and potentially moderates or transforms ongoing virtual interactions based on social signals, such as performing adaptive manipulations of behavior in intercultural conversations. The current article sketches a respective base architecture and discusses necessary research prospects and challenges as a starting point for future research and development. © 2015 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin

We present the Really Easy Displays framework (RED), a web-based platform to facilitate spontaneous interaction between devices and applications. RED provides a single abstraction for content and interaction between display types, data streams and interaction modalities, and allows developers to create multi-display applications by enabling the sharing of web document object models (DOMs) across displays. We present lessons learned from using RED in our own research, hands-on workshops with developers and interviews with long-term developers over the course of a year. We provide initial evidence that the use of web-technologies in a framework like RED can mitigate some barriers encountered in by multi-display interaction scenarios, and we propose future work to improve RED. The goal of this paper is unsupervised face clustering in edited video material - where face tracks arising from different people are assigned to separate clusters, with one cluster for each person. In particular we explore the extent to which faces can be clustered automatically without making an error. This is a very challenging problem given the variation in pose, lighting and expressions that can occur, and the similarities between different people. The novelty we bring is three fold: first, we show that a form of weak supervision is available from the editing structure of the material - the shots, threads and scenes that are standard in edited video;second, we show that by first clustering within scenes the number of face tracks can be significantly reduced with almost no errors;third, we propose an extension of the clustering method to entire episodes using exemplar SVMs based on the negative training data automatically harvested from the editing structure. The method is demonstrated on multiple episodes from two very different TV series, Scrubs and Buffy. For both series it is shown that we move towards our goal, and also outperform a number of baselines from previous works. Copyright is held by the authors.

The current study deals with an empirical approach to an improvement of the patient and doctor relationship of patients undergoing an orthognathic surgery. The aim is the development of an information and communication concept for a smooth and positive treatment for medicine and patient. Such an intervention is a decisive experience and needs to be treated very sensitive. Patients with jaw modulation often suffer from medical-functional as well as psychological problems. Also after surgery, the change of appearance might lead to adjustment disorder. Therefore, a well-elaborated treatment is needed and essential. Retrospective already operated patients were interviewed regarding their expectations, fear, hopes and wishes as well as their individual experience with the surgery. The addition of technical support in form of a 3D scan was also assessed. First results portray a big need of an improved medical education concept as well as an overall positive assessment of the 3D scan. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Encouraging civic participation through local news aggregation

Traditional sources of information for small and rural communities have been disappearing over the past decade. A lot of the information and discussion related to such areas is now scattered across websites of numerous local organizations, individual blogs, social media and other user-generated media (YouTube, Flickr). To facilitate citizen engagement and social interaction it is important to capture this information and make it easily accessible. A system with location-based support can provide local citizens with an engaging way to interact with information and identify the local issues most relevant to them, such as a road construction site. We created an information aggregator, called the Virtual Town Square (VTS), to support and facilitate local discussion. It supports a location-based interface for users to access the information collected. In this paper, we discuss focus group interviews with local citizens that motivated our design of a system to facilitate civic participation. We then discuss the unique design challenges of a local news aggregator and our design approach to create a local information ecosystem. We also describe the initial evaluation and feedback we received from local users. We close the paper with a discussion of future changes to VTS to address its initial limitations. © 2014 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

Model compensation approach has been successfully applied to various noise robust speech recognition tasks. In this paper, based on Continuous Time (CT) approximation, the dynamic mismatch function is derived without further approximation. With such mismatch function, a novel approach to deriving the formula for calculating the dynamic statistics is presented. Besides, we also provide an insight on the processing of the pseudo inverse of non-square discrete cosine transform (DCT) matrix during model compensation. Experiments on Aurora 4 showed that the proposed approach obtained 23.2% relative WER reduction over traditional first-order Vector Taylor Series (VTS) approach. Copyright © 2014 ISCA.

This paper proposes an adaptive tree-based cost aggregation strategy for stereo matching. The previous tree-based algorithms, hindered by the greediness of minimum spanning tree (MST), provide poorly adaptive support windows and have bad performance on curved and slanted surfaces. The proposed method incorporates randomness and overcomes these drawbacks by introducing loop-erased random walk (LERW) into tree construction. Experimental results over Middlebury dataset demonstrate that our LERW-based strategy outperforms other tree-based state-of-the-art strategies in most of the high resolution test cases. Our contributions include: 1) an LERW-based cost aggregation strategy;2) an LERW-based refinement method;3) mathematical analysis of the adaptability of our support windows. © 2014 IEEE.

The monitoring of sleep patterns is of major importance for various reasons such as the detection and treatment of sleep disorders, the assessment of the effect of different medical conditions or medications on the sleep quality, and the assessment of mortality risks associated with sleeping patterns in adults and children. Sleep monitoring by itself is a difficult problem due to both privacy and technical considerations. The proposed system uses a combination of non-invasive sensors to assess and report sleep patterns: a contact-based pressure mattress and a non-contact 3D image acquisition device, which can complement each other. To evaluate our system, we used real data collected in Heracleia lab's assistive living apartment. Our system uses Machine Learning techniques to automatically analyze the collected data and recognize sleep patterns. It is non-invasive, as it does not disrupt the user's usual sleeping behavior and it can be used both at the clinic and at home with minimal cost. © 2012 Springer-Verlag London.
