This poster paper presents a high-level description of the Metalogue project that is developing a multi-modal dialogue system that is able to implement interactive behaviors that seem natural to users and is flexible enough to exploit the full potential of multimodal interaction. We provide an outline of the initial work undertaken to define a an open architecture for the integrated Metalogue system. This system includes components that are necessary for the implementation of the processing stages for a variety of application domains: initialization, training, information gathering, orchestration, multimodality, dialogue management, speech recognition, speech synthesis and user modelling.
Behavior, including non verbal, expressiveness is an integral part of the communication process since it can provide information on the emotional state and the user's performance when the aim of the interaction is...

We evaluated the effects of robot gaze behavior on interactions with multiple users in a museum-like setting. We posit that a robot needs to divide its attention between multiple users and may be able to use its gaze to 'point' at objects of interest. A 2 (person-oriented [only looking at participants] vs. object-oriented [also looking at artworks] gaze) × 2 ('favored' [looked at more] vs. 'not favored' [looked at less] by the robot) mixed factorial design (N=57) study was carried out in a museum-like lab setting where a robot talked about two artworks to groups of three participants. Results indicate that 'favored' participants did indeed pay more attention to the robot and the artworks. However, surprisingly they paid more attention when the robot did not look over to the object of interest compared to when it did give this gaze cue. The findings suggest that using an object-oriented gaze as a cue for people to look at an object may not carry across readily from person-to-person to human-robot communication. People had trouble interpreting the cue and were possibly distracted by the robot's movement.

Common guidelines followed in the animation community include the idea that cartoon characters should be exaggerated to better convey emotion and intent, whereas more realistic characters should have “matching” realistic motion. We investigated the effects of rendering style and amount of facial motion on perceptions of character likeability, intelligence, and extraversion. We used cartoon and more realistic-looking characters that were animated with tracked actor motion. The motion was exaggerated and damped in 10% increments up to a 40% difference from the original motion. We discovered that motion changes ±20% from original motion affected perceptions of likeability and intelligence differently in the realistic-looking and cartoon characters. The realistic-looking characters benefited from increased motion whereas the cartoon characters benefitted from damped motion. Furthermore, the amount of facial motion and perceptions of extraversion were significantly correlated.
We designed a collaborative navigation interface in which one user (the controller) guides a second, remote user (the navigator) through a 3D game environment. Both sides of the interface use commercially available ga...

We explore the feasibility of using crowd workers from Amazon Mechanical Turk to identify and rank sidewalk accessibility issues from a manually curated database of 100 Google Street View images. We examine the effect of three different interactive labeling interfaces Point, Rectangle, and Outlineon task accuracy and duration. We close the paper by discussing limitations and opportunities for future work.
In this paper we describe CTArcade, a web application framework that seeks to engage users through game play resulting in the improvement of computational thinking (CT) skills. Our formative study indicates that CT sk...

With the enormous growth of online reviews in Internet, sentiment analysis has received more and more attention in information retrieval and natural language processing community. Up to now there are very few researches conducted on sentiment analysis for Persian documents. This paper considers the problem of sentiment classification for online customer reviews in Persian language. One of the challenges of Persian language is using of a wide variety of declensional suffixes. Another common problem of Persian text is word spacing. In Persian in addition to white space as interwords space, an intra-word space called pseudo-space separates word's part. One more noticeable challenge in customer reviews in Persian language is that of utilizing many informal or colloquial words in text. In this paper we study these challenges by proposing a model for sentiment classification of Persian review documents. The proposed model is based on a lemmatization approach for Persian language and is employed Naive Bayes learning algorithm for classification. Additionally we present a new feature selection method based on the mutual information method to extract the best feature collection from the initial extracted features. Finally we evaluate the performance of the model on a manually gathered collection of cellphone reviews, where the results show the effectiveness of the proposed model.
What, if any, are the effects of the changes in distributed systems behavior on the social dynamics of distributed groups? The rapid evolution of cloud infrastructures, portable devices and multimedia services has ena...

Eye movement combined with lip synchronization, eye movements, and emotional facial expression revealed an interesting research field that gives information about verbal and nonverbal behaviors occurring in the human body. Most of the previous researchers focused on eyes gazes, lip synching and emotion expression which are the most important features that can transfer nonverbal information to enhance, understand or express emotion. In this paper, the recent advances in 3D facial expression are introduced focusing on the presentation of Xface platform toolkit that developed a 3D talking avatars synthesis by implementing text-to-speech engine (TTS) to depict the basic lip shapes necessary for each phonemes to convey the dialogue. This work is believed to give the future direction that can lead into new research issue in facial animation.
