Studies indicate that making learners feel good is important only minor to clear knowledge transformation. Many studies have tried to use virtual humans as a part of interface in learning systems to increase the effect of instructions. Based on social interaction and pedagogical theories, many e-learning systems use animated films or virtual reality to boost human-computer engagement and ease their negative emotions. However, affective learning systems still need much research to improve their functionalities and usability. This study proposed a convenient approach to develop an emotionally interactive learning system;learners can express their emotions by mouse-clicking while learning. A virtual human was created to empathically react to learners in proactive and reactive ways to encourage and persuade them into persistent learning and help achieve their goals. Experimental results show that, averagely, subjects can tell virtual human's emotions and agree to its empathic reactions. Persuasion conducted by virtual human could not increase subjects' learning time, but could significantly increase their completion rate of exercises. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Infiltrative nature of lesions is a significant feature of malignant breast lesion in ultrasound images. Characterizing infiltrative nature is crucial for the realization of computer-aided diagnosis system. In this study, the infiltrative nature is regarded as an energy that produces irregularly and considerably local variances in a 1D signal. The local variances can be enhanced by few high octave energies in 1D discrete periodized wavelet transform (DPWT). A test dataset of breast sonograms with the lesion contour delineated by an experienced physician and two inexperienced students are built for feature efficacy evaluation. A high individual performance result implies that the proposed feature is well correlated with radiologist's perception and closer to match those in trained physician than morphometric parameters. Experimental results also reveal that with a great performance improvement, the proposed feature is suitable for the combination with some morphometric parameters.

In this paper, we investigate the fault tolerant pancyclicity of the WK-Recursive network. The WK-Recursive network has many attractive properties, such as high degree of regularity, symmetry and efficient communication. Particularly, for any specified degree, it can be expanded to an arbitrary size level without reconfiguring the edges. We show that a WK-Recursive network with amplitude W and level L is pancyclic for W ges 5 with W-3 fault edges. Since the connectivity of the WK-Recursive network is W-1, and the WK-Recursive network is pancyclic for W ges 5, our result is optimal.

A potential interconnection network named fully connected cubic network (FCCN) that demonstrates many attractive properties including efficient communication, regularity and small diameter has been proposed by Chang and Wang [Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing, 61 (2001) 838-849]. In this paper, we propose a distributed broadcasting algorithm for FCCN(n). The height of the broadcasting tree is less than or equal to the diameter of FCCN(n). It is very simple and easy to be implemented. In fact, it requires only extra two integers included in the message; and as a node receives the message, it costs constant time to decide the neighbors to broadcast in a asynchronous environment.

In this paper, a fast quality-on-demand (QOD) algorithm for wavelet-based electrocardiogram (ECG) signal compression is proposed. The algorithm based on the 1-D reversible round-off non-recursive discrete periodized wavelet transform (1-D RRO-NRDPWT) and an approximately linear compression performance design to build a linear prediction model for quantization scale refinement. The convergence of quality control is verified to be always held. By using the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database, the experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively improved the computational complexity and convergence speed of quality control.

In live peer-to-peer (P2P) streaming, each peer (child) has a number of supplying parents whose packets have to be scheduled and delivered in time for continuous playback at the child. It is challenging to develop a scheduling algorithm that achieves low delay given heterogeneous bandwidth, propagation delays and available content in all the parents. This paper proposes a novel, simple and effective scheduling scheme called pattern-push. As compared to the traditional mesh-pull, pattern-push does not require continuous buffermap advertisements from the parents, and operates on the packet level instead of the larger segment level. In pattern-push, each parent pushes its packets according to a pattern as indicated by a starting packet ID and a cycle bitmap. Pattern-push requires only minimal feedback from the child, as the pattern only needs to be changed when the child detects a marked change in network conditions or its parents. Simulation results show that pattern-push achieves a significantly lower delay and overhead as compared with both traditional and recent scheduling algorithms proposed in the literature.

The first article reports on context-sensitive augmented-reality research presented at the 2007 International Symposium on Ubiquitous Virtual Reality. Different parallel architectures may require different algorithms to make the existent algorithms on one architecture be easily transformed to or implemented on another architecture. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for embedding complete binary trees in a faulty Incrementally Extensible Hypercube (IEH). Furthermore, to obtain the replaceable node of the faulty node, 2-expansion is permitted such that up to (n+1) faults can be tolerated with dilation 3, congestion 1 and load 1. The presented embedding methods are optimized mainly for balancing the processor loads, while minimizing dilation and congestion as far as possible: According to the result, we can map the parallel algorithms developed by the structure of complete binary tree in an IEH. These methods of reconfiguring enable extremely high-speed parallel computation.

In this paper, we propose a blind watermark detection scheme for digital cinema which is robust against D-A/A-D conversion attack. D-A/A-D conversion attack commonly happens during capturing cinema with a camera and is composed of various geometrical distortions as well as signal processing distortions. In many video applications, geometric distortions have been compensated by utilizing auto-correlation function (ACF). Since the ACF cannot resist projective transform but affine transform, we present a robust watermark detection scheme utilizing local auto-correlation function (LACF) with a mathematical model. Also, we suggest a way to design watermark pattern to improve performance of the LACF. We demonstrate robustness of the presented scheme against D-A/A- D conversion attacks for digital cinema as well as common video processing attacks.
