In this paper we deal with the problem of failure diagnosis of discrete event systems with decentralized information. The decentralized architecture that we use is composed by a set of sites communicating their diagnosis information with a coordinator that is responsible of detecting the occurrence of failures in the system. In particular, we define two protocols that differ for the amount of information exchanged between the local sites and the coordinator, and the rules adopted by the coordinator to compute the global diagnosis states.

This paper reports application results of Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) for a practical problem. In this paper, a reentrant scheduling problem is considered as a practical problem which has been addressed by our previous works. MCTS introduced by Coulom is a best-first search where the pseudorandom simulations guide the solution of problem. Recent improvements on MCTS have produced strong computer Go program, which has a large search space, and the success is a hot topic for selecting the best move. So far, most of reports about MCTS have been on two-player game, and MCTS has been applied rarely in one-player perfect-information games. MCTS does not need an admissible heuristic, so the application of MCTS for one-player games might be an interesting alternative. Additionally, one-player games like puzzles are determinately operated only by one player's decision, so sequences of changes in state are describable as a network diagram of interdependence of operations. Therefore if MCTS for one-player games is considered as a meta-heuristic algorithm, we can use this algorithm for not only many practical problems, but also combinatorial optimization problems. Especially as MCTS does not fully depend on evaluation function, so the solutions based on MCTS remain effective if objective function of problem is modified. This paper firstly investigated on the application of Single Player MCTS (SP-MCTS) introduced by Schadd et al. Next this paper showed the effectiveness of new simulation strategies on SP-MCTS by numerical experiments. Based on the results, this paper discussed the application potentiality of SP-MCTS for a practical reentrant scheduling problem.

In this paper, a novel adaptive predictive control is presented for a class of multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) nonlinear systems in block-triangular form with uncertain couplings of states/delayed states as well as inputs among subsystems. For each subsystem of the MIMO system, future states prediction is developed and using the predicted future states, adaptive predictive control is designed under certainty equivalence principal to compensate the parametric uncertainties in the couplings. To eliminate the functional uncertainties in the couplings, a novel compensation mechanism is developed for each subsystem. Under the proposed adaptive controls, all the signals in the closed-loop MIMO systems are guaranteed to be globally bounded. In addition, all the output tracking errors are guaranteed to converge to zeros. The effectiveness of the proposed control is demonstrated in the simulation. © 2010 AACC.

In this work we present a Bio-PEPA model describing the Nuclear Factor κB (NF-κB) signalling pathway. In particular our model focuses on the dynamic response of NF-κB to an external stimulus. Each biochemical species in the pathway is represented by a specific Bio-PEPA component and the external stimulus is abstracted by time-dependent Bio-PEPA events describing the start and the end of the signal. The Bio-PEPA model is a formal intermediate representation of the pathway on which various kinds of analysis can be performed. Both stochastic and deterministic simulations are carried out to validate our model against the experimental data and in-silico experiments in the literature and to verify some properties, such as, the impact of the duration of the external stimulus and of the total NF-κB initial amount on the behaviour of some species of interest. Furthermore we use stochastic simulation to compare the behaviour of the single cell against the average behaviour of a population of cells. Finally, sensitivity analysis is considered to investigate the most influential parameters of the model. Importantly, the approach taken suggests that the sensitivity of some parameters alters with the time evolution of the pathway. © 2010 Springer.

The recent advances in computer animation, motion image processing, robotics and so on prompted us to analyze computational complexity of four-dimensional pattern processing. Thus, the research of four-dimensional automata as a computational model of four-dimensional pattern processing has also been meaningful. From this viewpoint, we introduced a four-dimensional alternating Turing machine (4-ATM) operating in parallel. In this paper, we continue the investigations about 4-ATM's, deal with a four-dimensional synchronized alternating Turing machine (4-SATM), and investigate some properties of 4-SATM's which each sidelength of each input tape is equivalent. The main topics of this paper are: (1) hierarchies based on the number of processes of 4-SATM's, and (2) recognizability of connected pictures by 4-SATM's.

Synchronized alternating machine is an alternating machine with a special subset of internal states called synchronizing states. This paper introduces a four-dimensional synchronized alternating Turing machine (4-SATM), and investigates fundamental properties of 4-SATM's. The main topics of this paper are: (1) a relationship between the accepting powers of 4-SATM's and four-dimensional alternating Turing machines with small space bounds, (2) a relationship between the accepting powers of seven-way and eight-way 4-SATM's, (3) a relationship between the accepting powers of 4-SATM's and four-dimensional nondeterministic Turing machines. In this paper, we let each sidelength of each input tape of these automata be equivalent in order to increase the theoretical interest.

"Virtual Coach" refers to a coaching program or device aiming to guide users through tasks for the purpose of prompting positive behavior or assisting with learning new skills. This article reviews virtual coach interventions with the purpose of guiding rehabilitation professionals to comprehend more effectively the essential components of such interventions, the underlying technologies and their integration, and example applications. A design space of virtual coach interventions including self-monitoring, context awareness, interface modality, and coaching strategies were identified and discussed to address when, how, and what coaching messages to deliver in an automated and intelligent way. Example applications that address various health-related issues also are provided to illustrate how a virtual coach intervention is developed and evaluated. Finally, the article provides some insight into addressing key challenges and opportunities in designing and implementing virtual coach interventions. It is expected that more virtual coach interventions will be developed in the field of rehabilitation to support self-care and prevent secondary conditions in individuals with disabilities. © 2010 Elsevier Inc.

In this paper, a control mechanism is presented to improve the compliance performance of the robot manipulator when it is in contact with the unknown environment. This mechanism guarantees that the dynamics of the whole system follows a target impedance model so that the desired compliance performance is obtained. In particular, under the assumption that the dynamics is periodic, a learning law is developed to estimate the unknown dynamics parameters. Besides, the proposed systematic learning control does not require the accurate force measurement. Its performance and robustness are discussed in details by the rigorous analysis. At last, the validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation. © 2010 IEEE.

The tensor rank (also known as generalized Schmidt rank) of multipartite pure states plays an important role in the study of entanglement classifications and transformations. We employ powerful tools from the theory of homogeneous polynomials to investigate the tensor rank of symmetric states such as the tripartite state |W3⟩=13(|100⟩+|010⟩+|001⟩) and its N-partite generalization |WN⟩. Previous tensor rank estimates are dramatically improved and we show that (i) three copies of |W3⟩ have a rank of either 15 or 16, (ii) two copies of |WN⟩ have a rank of 3N−2, and (iii) n copies of |WN⟩ have a rank of O(N). A remarkable consequence of these results is that certain multipartite transformations, impossible even probabilistically, can become possible when performed in multiple-copy bunches or when assisted by some catalyzing state. This effect is impossible for bipartite pure states.
