In this paper an effective design approach to the design of hierarchical control architectures for the automation industrial plants is presented. The main characteristic of the solution is the clear and structural separation between “policies” and “actions” deriving from the use of a novel abstract entity in modelling automation plants: the Generalized Actuator. Particular attention is paid to illustrate how to define generalized actuators starting from a “bare plant”. The potentialities of this method are emphasized by means of a case study.

The I(V) characteristics of amorphous GST devices show a peculiar S-shape behavior, that is a swift rise of the current along with a voltage snap-back. This type of characteristics led to a growing research interest in view of the future application of such materials to the manufacturing of phase-change memory devices. In this work we adopt a generalization of the variable-range hopping theory to simulate charge transport in a layer of amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 sandwiched between two planar metallic electrodes. The numerical implementation of a current-driven Monte Carlo code allows one both to provide a complete microscopic particle picture of electrical conduction in the device and to better analyze the mechanisms governing the snap-back effect.

The regulation theory is a very robust way to achieve the asymptotic tracking of input references on Linear Time-Invariant systems generated by an exosystem. Nevertheless, the classical regulation theory cannot be applied to the asymptotic tracking of non-sinusoidal periodic references having an infinite number of harmonics (as triangular waves). In literature many methods have been proposed to deal with this kind of problem. In this paper a novel approach based on a Switched Linear Internal Model is proposed by presenting some preliminary results. This approach seems particularly promising in terms of robustness to disturbances not “captured” by the internal model and this is the main motivation of starting this study.

In many areas multimedia technology has made its way into mainstream. In the case of digital audio this is manifested in numerous online music stores having turned into profitable businesses. The widespread user adaption of digital audio both on home computers and mobile players show the size of this market. Thus, ways to automatically process and handle the growing size of private and commercial collections become increasingly important;along goes a need to make music interpretable by computers. The most obvious representation of audio files is their sound - there are, however, more ways of describing a song, for instance its lyrics, which describe songs in terms of content words. Lyrics of music may be orthogonal to its sound, and differ greatly from other texts regarding their (rhyme) structure. Consequently, the exploitation of these properties has potential for typical music information retrieval tasks such as musical genre classification;so far, there is a lack of means to efficiently combine these modalities. In this paper, we present findings from investigating advanced lyrics features such as the frequency of certain rhyme patterns, several parts-of-speech features, and statistic features such as words per minute (WPM). We further analyse in how far a combination of these features with existing acoustic feature sets can be exploited for genre classification and provide experiments on two test collections. This paper proposes a system to reconstruct the 3D shape model of background regions for generating 3D video easily. As the progress of computer vision technologies continues, many 3D video systems have been developed that tend to focus on automatic 3D reconstruction to capture target (foreground) objects. On the other hand, the 3D shapes of background regions such as walls and floors are generally made manually, for example, using 3D modeling software such as CAD. However, the operation is not easy for novices. Our system provides an easy background modeling method for such users. User operations include segmenting multiple background images into several boxes by indi cating their vertices and giving the correspondence of the boxes between multiple images. As a result, the 3D coordinates of the vertices are calculated using a stereo vision algorithm.

The use of design patterns and modular decomposition for the development of component-based software products brings significant improvements in terms of several quality attributes (e.g., reusability, reliability, maintainability). In addition, the modular design of interacting software components allows the foundation of a flexible Domain Specific Language (DSL) that acts as a model description language rather than a coding language, bringing significant savings in terms of development effort. This is particularly true in the field of simulation, in which the use of a common language both to represent and to simulate a given simulation model practically eliminates the need and the effort to fill the gap between the model specification and the simulator implementation. This paper introduces the design features of jEQN, a language for the specification and implementation of simulation models based on extended queueing networks. Details concerning the application of design patterns, modular decomposition and generic type parameters are also presented.
