For some time now, researchers have been seeking to place software measurement on a more firmly grounded footing by establishing a theoretical basis for software comparison. Although there has been some work on trying to employ information theoretic concepts for the quantification of code documents, particularly on employing entropy and entropy-like measurements, we propose that employing the Similarity Metric of Li, Vit´anyi, and coworkers for the comparison of software documents will lead to the establishment of a theoretically justifiable means of comparing and evaluating software artifacts. In this paper, we review previous work on software measurement with a particular emphasis on information theoretic aspects, we examine the body of work on Kolmogorov complexity (upon which the Similarity Metric is based), and we report on some experiments that lend credence to our proposals. Finally, we discuss the potential advantages derived from the application of this theory to areas in the of software engineering. Copyright © (2007) by Knowledge systems Institute (KSI).

Model-based approaches have proven fruitful in the design and implementation of intelligent systems that provide automated diagnostic functions. A wide variety of models are used in these approaches to represent the particular domain knowledge, including analytic state-based models, input-output transfer function models, fault propagation models, and qualitative and quantitative physics-based models. Diagnostic applications are built around three main steps: observation, comparison, and diagnosis. If the modeling begins in the early stages of system development, engineering models such as fault propagation models can be used for testability analysis to aid definition and evaluation of instrumentation suites for observation of system behavior. Analytical models can be used in the design of monitoring algorithms that process observations to provide information for the second step in the process, comparison of expected behavior of the system to actual measured behavior. In the final diagnostic step, reasoning about the results of the comparison can be performed in a variety of ways, such as dependency matrices, graph propagation, constraint propagation, and state estimation. Realistic empirical evaluation and comparison of these approaches is often hampered by a lack of standard data sets and suitable testbeds. In this paper we describe the Advanced Diagnostics and Prognostics Testbed (ADAPT) at NASA Ames Research Center. The purpose of the testbed is to measure, evaluate, and mature diagnostic and prognostic health management technologies. This paper describes the testbed's hardware, software architecture, and concept of operations. A simulation testbed that accompanies ADAPT, and some of the diagnostic and decision support approaches being investigated are also discussed.

This report summarizes the presentations and discussions of the ThirdWorkshop on Models and Aspects Handling Crosscutting Concerns in MDSD, held in conjunction with the 21st European Conference on Object-Oriented programming (ECOOP) in Berlin, Germany on July, 31, 2007. This workshop was motivated by the fact that both Model-Driven Software Development (MDSD) and Aspect-Oriented Software Development (AOSD) are important new paradigms that both promise to change the way software is developed. Both approaches provide opportunities for concern separation. AOSD separates concerns horizontally and MDSD enables concern separation vertically. This workshop identified two key integration strategies to achieve the complementary benefits of both aspect-oriented and model-driven development. The first is the use of aspects within transformation languages to separate transformational concerns making model transformations easier to write. The second is the separation of concerns within models defined as aspects. This workshop established the key benefits of these. The major benefit of the first is easing the complexity of development and maintainability of transformations. The major benefit of the second is means to reduce the problems associated with aspects, such as, aspect interactions, fragile pointcuts and understandability.

This paper describes the design of an outdoor Distributed Mixed Reality (DMR) system to support multi-user interaction of multi-users and virtual object manipulations in a construction simulation. The proposed DMR system is based on an interactive animation system of operating virtual cranes and extends previous work in a significant manner by considering engineering constraints. Our design integrates a Head-Mounted Display, a GPS receiver, a 3D motion sensor, and a portable computer to carry out a construction simulation which can be run in the outdoors. We describe and evaluate the system design challenges and possible solutions for simulating multi-user collaborative construction activities within the DMR environment. Several issues related to tracking and registration, modeling, user interaction, and mobile networking are discussed. The proposed system prototype is demonstrated using a case study which simulates the deck rehabilitation project of a bridge. Using this system, two users can collaborate to replace a section of the bridge deck by operating two virtual cranes and communicating with each other. © 2007 American Society of Civil Engineers.

This paper describes a fully automated technique for detection and categorization of the seven basic facial expressions using Support Vector Machines (SVM). Facial expressions are communicated by subtle changes in one or more discrete features such as tightening the lips, raising the eyebrows, opening and closing of eyes or certain combinations of them, which can be identified through monitoring the changes in muscles movements (Action Units), located near about the regions of mouth, eyes and eyebrows. An analytic representation of face with fifteen feature points has been used that represent and identify the principle muscle actions as well as provide measurements of the discrete features responsible for each of the seven basic human emotions. Detection of these fifteen points of interest from the regions of eyes, eyebrows nose and mouth have been performed applying a standard image processing based multi-detector approach for facial feature point localization. The feature vector composed of fifteen features is then obtained by calculating the degree of displacement of five different pairs of points, and measuring the deviations of ten points from a non-changeable rigid point. Finally, obtained feature sets are used to train a SVM classifier so that it can categorize facial expressions when given to it in the form of a feature set. The developed automated facial expressions categorization system has been tested extensively on two publicly available facial expression databases and 91.30% and 84.07% of average successful categorization rate have been achieved. Bloom's taxonomy of the cognitive domain and the SOLO taxonomy are being increasingly widely used in the design and assessment of courses, but there are some drawbacks to their use in computer science. This paper reviews the literature on educational taxonomies and their use in computer science education, identifies some of the problems that arise, proposes a new taxonomy and discusses how this can be used in application-oriented courses such as programming.

It has been a long-time dream in electronic structure theory in physical chemistry/chemical physics to compute ground state energies of atomic and molecular systems by employing a variational approach in which the two-body reduced density matrix (RDM) is the unknown variable. Realization of the RDM approach has benefited greatly from recent developments in semidefinite programming (SDP). We present the actual state of this new application of SDP as well as the formulation of these SDPs, which can be arbitrarily large. Numerical results using parallel computation on high performance computers are given. The RDM method has several advantages including robustness and provision of high accuracy compared to traditional electronic structure methods, although its computational time and memory consumption are still extremely large. © Springer-Verlag 2007.

We compared the time evolution of a parametric system identification model of cardiotocography (CTG) during the last three hours of labour and delivery. The models are the impulse response functions (IRFs) of the system relating the uterine pressure (UP) and fetal heart rate (FHR). We used surrogate data to assess the likelihood that the model successfully identified system dynamics. We then investigated the ability of the models to indicate fetal distress by comparing normal and hypoxic cases. For pathological and normal fetuses, model output standard deviation sigma Y circ, first IRF minimum time T min and variance accounted for (VAF) were discriminating in the first two hours. In the final hour however, only T min remained discriminating. For intermediate and normal cases, sigma Y circ was always discriminating while T min discriminated in the final hour only. These results suggest that detecting some pathological and intermediate cases before injury occurs may be possible; this would be very useful clinically.

Mobile context-aware applications require sources of context information to drive more appropriate behavior. One valuable source of context information is context that already exists. Unfortunately, the situation an application is currently in and the situation in which a piece of context is initially used may differ by properties such as time and location. The further an application is away from the situation in which a piece of information was initially used, the more additional details it needs to be able to reuse it.
