Evolution, generality and robustness of emerged surrounding behavior in continuous predators-prey pursuit problem

We present the result of our work on the use of strongly typed genetic programming with exception handling capabilities for the evolution of surrounding behavior of agents situated in an inherently cooperative environment. The predators-prey pursuit problem is used to verify our hypothesis that relatively complex surrounding behavior may emerge from simple, implicit, locally defined, and therefore-scalable interactions between the predator agents. Proposing two different communication mechanisms ((i) simple, basic mechanism of implicit interaction, and (ii) explicit communications among the predator agents) we present a comparative analysis of the implications of these communication mechanisms on evolution, generality and robustness of the emerged surrounding behavior. We demonstrate that relatively complex-surrounding behavior emerges even from implicit, proximity-defined interactions among the agents. Although the basic model offers the benefits of simplicity and scalability, compared to the enhanced model of explicit communications among the agents, it features increased computational effort and inferior generality and robustness of agents' emergent surrounding behavior when the team of predator agents is evolved in noiseless environment and then tested in noisy and uncertain environment. Evolution in noisy environment virtually equalizes the robustness and generality characteristics of both models. For both models however the increase of noise levels during the evolution is associated with evolving solutions, which are more robust to noise but less general to new, unknown initial situations. © 2005 Springer science + Business Media, Inc.

In data publishing, the owner delegates the role of satisfying user queries to a third-party publisher. As the publisher may be untrusted or susceptible to attacks, it could produce incorrect query results. In this paper, we introduce a scheme for users to verify that their query results are complete (i.e., no qualifying tuples are omitted) and authentic (i.e., all the result values originated from the owner). The scheme supports range selection on key and non-key attributes, project as well as join queries on relational databases. Moreover, the proposed scheme complies with access control policies, is computationally secure, and can be implemented efficiently. Copyright 2005 ACM.

This work deals with the description of a design procedure for hierarchical Fault Tolerant Control (FTC) of large-scale systems. Following a functional perspective, a procedure for the modular design of the diagnostic and reconfiguration algorithms which run at different levels of the hierarchy is presented. Moreover a hierarchical decision logic algorithm is obtained by means of the theoretical machinery of the supervisor theory of discrete event systems. All the material presented here represents a brief summary of the ideas and results obtained in the context of the European Project IFATIS (proposal number IST-2001-32122).

Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) is an effective technique for controlling microprocessor energy and performance. Existing DVFS techniques are primarily based on hardware, OS time-interrupts, or static-compiler techniques. However, substantially greater gains can be realized when control opportunities are also explored in a dynamic compilation environment. There are several advantages to deploying DVFS and managing energy/performance tradeoffs through the use of a dynamic compiler. Most importantly, dynamic compiler driven DVFS is fine-grained, code-aware, and adaptive to the current microarchitecture environment. This paper presents a design framework of the run-time DVFS optimizer in a general dynamic compilation system. A prototype of the DVFS optimizer is implemented and integrated into an industrial-strength dynamic compilation system. The obtained optimization system is deployed in a real hardware platform that directly measures CPU voltage and current for accurate power and energy readings. Experimental results, based on physical measurements for over 40 SPEC or Olden benchmarks, show that significant energy savings are achieved with little performance degradation. SPEC2K FP benchmarks benefit with energy savings of up to 70% (with 0.5% performance loss). In addition, SPEC2K INT show up to 44% energy savings (with 5% performance loss), SPEC95 FP save up to 64% (with 4.9% performance loss), and Olden save up to 61% (with 4.5% performance loss). On average, the technique leads to an energy delay product (EDP) improvement that is 3times-5times better than static voltage scaling, and is more than 2times (22% vs. 9%) better than the reported DVFS results of prior static compiler work. While the proposed technique is an effective method for microprocessor voltage and frequency control, the design framework and methodology described in this paper have broader potential to address other energy and power issues such as di/dt and thermal control

Recent advances in P2P lookup overlays provide an appealing solution for distributed search without relying on a single database server. In addition to performing resource discovery, these P2P substrates also offer membership management for dynamic peers. In this paper, we propose a publicly shared architecture called VC2A that takes advantage of a P2P lookup substrate for computational applications. VC2A targets computational master-slave applications. An application running in VC2A dynamically allocates resources from the system on the fly. These allocated resources then self-manage and -heal. We have implemented an architecture based on our previous efforts that include an enhanced P2P lookup overlay and a mobile agent system on top of this overlay. We show that VC2A is not only scalable but robust, and takes advantage of heterogeneity of the resources. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

A common practice of human learning and knowledge management is to use general rules, exception rules, and exceptions to rules. One of the crucial issues is to find a right mixture of them. For discovering this type of knowledge, we consider "rule + exception", or rule-plus-exception, strategies. Results from psychology, expert systems, genetic algorithms, and machine learning and data mining are summarized and compared, and their implications to knowledge management and discovery are examined. The study motivates and establishes a basis for the design and implementation of new algorithms for the discovery of "rule + exception" type knowledge. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Two notable developments that will greatly influence the evolution of the Web are the ubiquity of handheld and other small computing devices, and the Web services model. It is widely agreed that browsing as an interacting mechanism is not always suitable, especially for handheld and embedded devices. The proliferation of such devices and the continuous improvement in their processing capabilities motivate us to start investigating alternatives to browsers. We present a Flash MX implementation of a dynamic client that interprets the Web service user interface (UI) on-the-fly, allowing different Web services to have their tailored user interfaces. At the same time, these interfaces can be interpreted differently on different devices, taking into consideration the capabilities and limitations of the target device. The UI is specified as a tailored form of a finite state machine, coded in XML, and can be located via a Web service registry.

The fracture property of amorphous metal was studied by a large scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The Finnis-Sinclair potential for α-iron was used as an inter-atomic potential. At first, we made a model amorphous metal by melting-rapid quenching simulation. And then a crystal growth simulation in the amorphous was performed. We used circular model, and the cracktip is assumed to be at the center. In order to analyze the crack growth characteristics in an infinite domain, the linear elastic solution of Mode I crack was used as a boundary condition. The periodic boundary condition was used to the thickness direction. The crack opens in similar fashion and it has smooth surfaces during the amorphous state. As it deformed, some clusters of bcc-crystal nucleate around the cracktip and they grow rapidly. The distribution of deformation zones and deformation mechanism are significantly altered. The grains are not deformed while they are relatively small. The emission of dislocations from the cracktip is observed, after the crystal phase covered the crack-tip surfaces. The grain size appeared small in the vicinity of the crack-tip, and becomes gradually large as it separates form the crack-tip.

Future pervasive networks will be constructed by various access networks, which are managed by different operators. Wireless LAN hotspot services will be available in numerous locations, and cellular services, which provide a wide cover-age area, will also be available. In order to realize efficient mobile computing in such an environment, mobile hosts must have multiple network media as well as functions to select the optimum network among them based upon the current situation without the disconnecting communications. In order to provide mobile hosts with such a function, we propose an association layer, which is inserted between the transport and network layers. The association layer selects the appropriate network medium for each flow according to the network conditions and flow characteristics, providing end-to-end QoS in multihomed networks. Furthermore, we show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme through simulation results and demonstrate proof of concept based on empirical evaluations of a prototype implementation. Evaluating the implications of an architecture design early in the software development lifecycle is important in order to reduce costs of development. Reliability is an important concern with regard to the correct delivery of software system service. Recently, the UML Profile for Modeling Quality of Service has defined a set of UML extensions to represent dependability concerns (including reliability) and other non-functional requirements in early stages of the software development lifecycle. Our research has shown that these extensions are not comprehensive enough to support reliability analysis for model-driven software engineering, because the description of reliability characteristics in this profile lacks support for certain dynamic aspects that are essential in modeling reliability. In this work, we define a profile for reliability analysis by extending the UML 2.0 specification to support reliability prediction based on scenario specifications. A UML model specified using the profile is translated to a labelled transition system (LTS), which is used for automated reliability prediction and identification of implied scenarios;the results of this analysis are then fed back to the UML model. The result is a comprehensive framework for addressing software reliability modeling, including analysis and evolution of reliability predictions. We exemplify our approach using the Boiler System used in previous work and demonstrate how reliability analysis results can be integrated into UML models. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
