Pervasive computing requires some level of trust to be established between entities. In this paper we argue for an entity recognition based approach to building this trust which differs from starting from more traditional authentication methods. We also argue for the concept of a "pluggable" recognition module which allows different recognition schemes to be used in different circumstances. Finally, we propose that the trust in the underlying infrastructure has to be taken into account when considering end-to-end trust. © Springer-Verlag 2004.

The School of Aerospace Engineering of the Forli Branch of the University of Bologna is currently developing an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) which, thanks to a partially autonomous flight capability, aims to be a very low cost and compact flying platform capable of performing significant flight tests of general GNC algorithms or mission oriented experiments. The development activity includes the project, the synthesis and the assembly of the on-board avionics equipment, together with the software implementation for both data collection and some basic GNC algorithms. A demonstrative application will be the test of some integrity monitoring functions and algorithms using data collected during some flights.

The internal structural changes around the crack-tip and the pertinent crack growth behavior in an amorphous metal are studied by a large scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The Finnis-Sinclair potential for α-iron is used as an interatomic potential. The model amorphous metal was created by melting-rapid quenching simulation. The crack opens in similar fashion and it has smooth surfaces during the amorphous state. As it deformed, nano-scaled crystalline phase grows around the crack-tip. The distribution of deformation zones and deformation mechanism are significantly altered. The grains are not deformed while they are relatively small. The emission of dislocations from the crack-tip is observed, after the crystal phase covered the crack-tip surfaces. The grain size appeared small in the vicinity of the crack-tip, and becomes gradually large as it separates form the crack-tip.

University education in all disciplines is changing fast. A global 'massification' is causing intakes to swell, and students are becoming more focused on vocational issues. When universities were smaller and attitudes different, it was simple for departments to recruit students who were relatively certain to succeed this has changed, Nowadays universities cannot 'cherry pick' the high quality output of high schools, and motivation of the intake to study has evolved far away from the pure pursuit of knowledge for which we might once have hoped. CS is affected by this in several peculiar ways: (1) It is often popular among applicants for the 'wrong' reasons: a route to a job. This is true despite the 'dotcom' collapse. (2) In many countries, pre-university CS is not easily available. Where it is available, its content and delivery is unlikely to correspond well to the university curriculum. (3) Many students have some experience of computing, often on home machines and self-taught. This can give them a wholly misleading view of what CS is, and their aptitude for it. (4) The math content of CS is often unexpected by students, and provokes a negative reaction. (5) Pre-university math preparation, while clearly of value, is often not well suited to CS. While mathematical fluency and algebraic fluency are clearly useful, the maths of CS (logic, discrete maths) are often untouched by high schools. For these, and other reasons, it can be very hard to predict the performance of CS students at entry. Members of the panel have statistical evidence from a range of countries and university systems demonstrating this to be the case. The desirability of being able to predict who will succeed is clear: If high school grades are incomplete or inaccurate predictors, what should we use instead? Meanwhile, attempts to widen participation, which are global, mean that many applicants present without traditional qualifications, and we need mechanisms to judge them. Further, filtering out

Over the last four years, a community of researchers working on Grid and High Performance Computing technologies started discussing the barriers and opportunities that grid technologies must face and exploit for the development of health-related applications. This interest lead to the first Healthgrid conference, held in Lyon, France, on January 16th–17th, 2003, with the focus of creating increased awareness about the possibilities and advantages linked to the deployment of grid technologies in health, ultimately targeting the creation of a European/international grid infrastructure for health. The topics of this conference converged with the position of the eHealth division of the European Commission, whose mandate from the Lisbon Meeting was "To develop an intelligent environment that enables ubiquitous management of citizens’ health status, and to assist health professionals in coping with some major challenges, risk management and the integration into clinical practice of advances in health knowledge." In this context "Health" involves not only clinical procedures but covers the whole range of information from molecular level (genetic and proteomic information) over cells and tissues, to the individual and finally the population level (social healthcare). Grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common working backbone for all different members of this large "health family" and will hopefully lead to an increased awareness and interoperability among disciplines. The first HealthGrid conference led to the creation of the Healthgrid association, a non-profit research association legally incorporated in France but formed from the broad community of European researchers and institutions sharing expertise in health grids. After the second Healthgrid conference, held in Clermont-Ferrand on January 29th–30th, 2004, the need for a "white paper" on the current status and prospective of health grids was raised. Autonomous fault detection and isolation capability is an essential figure for GPS based sole means of Navigation systems. Integrity is as important as accuracy for aeronautical applications. Thus the defmition of a new perspective for the analysis of GPS satellite malfunctions, and the synthesis of RAIM algorithms is discussed. New features and parameters for failure detection and isolations are introduced. The new approach is based upon the joint exploitation of all the possible LS solutions applicable to a given linear estimation problem, e.g. GPS estimation, and the analysIs IS performed m the position domain. Preliminary results show accordance with the predicted outcome and the effectiveness of the proposed implementation.

This paper proposes a reference management technique for closed-loop systems with state and/or control constraints. Using a so-called "blocking" operation and a multi-parametric programming, we obtain the management rule which is represented in the form of a piecewise state affine function, and whose period of the management is longer than a sampling time of the constrained system. The method has a suitable property for an implementation to a real control system. It is that tuning the management period makes it possible to reduce and adjust the implemented data of the reference governor, guaranteeing the constraint fulfillment for infinite time. Moreover, we perform a numerical simulation to verify and show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The paper presents the distribution of the parameters of mechanical stiffness in a sample of animal bone. The parameters are measured at different distances from the cortical bone. As it is widely known, bone properties vary significantly depending on the length of the bone. Additionally, the properties of trabecular bone also depend on its distance from the cortical bone. The study presents the results for both samples of normal bone tissue and samples of bone tissue with chemically modified biomechanical properties. For each sample a matrix of measurement points was defined. For each measurement point, a micro hardness test was performed in order to define hardness of the micro volume and to measure the Young's modulus. This test was carried out using Micro-Combi-Tester equipment. Micro hardness was measured with Vickers diamond, and the analysis of deformation properties was realized by the Olivier and Pharr method. The application of Oliver and Pharr method enabled the calculation of Young's modulus directly from the unloading curve. Additionally, mineral density for all samples was measured using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry method. This study allowed for comparison of bone mineral density parameter with Young's modulus. The aim of this comparison was to demonstrate changes caused by modification of biomechanical properties of bone. © 2004, The authors.

In this paper, an algorithm for matching and classifying 2-D shapes that undergo affine transformation is developed. The algorithm uses the 1-D Dyadic Wavelet Transform (DWT) to decompose a shape's boundary into multiscale levels. The curve moment invariants of the approximation coefficients are used as the shape features. Two different dissimilarities are calculated from the Euclidean distances between the decomposed scale levels of the shapes. These dissimilarities are used in shape matching and clustering by using hierarchical clustering algorithm with ward's linkage rules. The presented algorithm is invariant to the affine transformation and to the boundary starting point variation. The algorithm is also capable of finding and clustering similar shapes even if there are small deformations between their boundaries. ©2004 IEEE.

In this paper we address the test scheduling problem for system-on-chip designs. Different from previous approaches where it is assumed that all tests are performed until completion, we consider the cases where the test process are terminated as soon as a defect is detected. This is common practice in production test of chips. The proposed technique takes into account the probability of defect-detection by a test in order to schedule the tests so that the expected total test time is minimized. We investigate different test bus structures, test scheduling strategies (sequential scheduling vs. concurrent scheduling), and test set assumptions (fixed test time vs. flexible test time). We have also made experiments to illustrate the efficiency of taking defect probability into account during test scheduling.
