Collects three essays on the theme of interactive fiction: Character-based interactive story systems; Interactive fiction, the story is just beginning, and Building coherent plots in interactive fiction. These essays make clear that progress in interactive fiction relies on continued advances in computer graphics, natural-language understanding, and on other well-appreciated topics in AI and computerscience-and, indeed, thy have already made possible the first provocative examples of fiction systems. However, the essays make it equally clear that we must answer many new, intriguing questions to achieve the tantalizing goal of having a computer do for us what Charles Lutwidge Dodgson did more than a century ago for Alice Lidell and her sisters.

The parallel programming community has long recognized the need for a simple programming environment offering interprocess communication between heterogeneous systems. As the Parallel Virtual Machine environment, PVM, has emerged to meet this goal, an increasing number of educational institutions are choosing PVM to support their teaching of parallel and distributed computing using networks of workstations. However, it is often the nature of PVM's design and implementation that can severely limit its success in a teaching environment. This paper first motivates and then describes improvements to the PVM environment which increase both robustness and efficiency in an educational setting.

Hsys Module is a suite of Xmath functions for the analysis and synthesis of linear hybrid systems, which include purely continuous-time and discrete-time systems and sampled-data control systems. It provides all the functionality necessary to carry out the analysis and synthesis of such systems and a wide variety of utilities to facilitate design. This paper shows the data structure, the list of functions and the function overloading. It also gives an example of H∞ synthesis.
The emergence and effectiveness of communication interface in a colony of autonomous agents is discussed in this paper. The robotic agents sense the world within which they are embedded, while performing specific task...

Fail-safety is a system attribute which ensures that a program either completes its execution satisfying its post-conditions in the normal manner or signals its failure to do so to its operating environment. Such an attribute is desirable of any system as it ensures the correctness of results which are produced. A very few modern sequential programming languages offer program fail-safety through the judicious use of a well designed exception handling mechanism. In this paper the exception handling techniques used in those sequential systems are developed to provide the guidelines for fail-safe concurrent system design. (C) 1997 Elsevier science Ltd.

Several nonclosure properties of each class of sets accepted by two-dimensional alternating one-marker automata, alternating one-marker automata with only universal states, nondeterministic one-marker automata, deterministic one-marker automata, alternating finite automata, and alternating finite automata with only universal states are shown. To do this, we first establish the upper bounds of the working space used by "three-way" alternating Turing machines with only universal states to simulate those "four-way" non-storage machines. These bounds provide us a simplified and unified proof method for the whole variants of one-marker and/or alternating finite state machine, without directly analyzing the complex behavior of the individual four-way machine on two-dimensional rectangular input tapes. We also summarize the known closure properties including Boolean closures for all the variants of two-dimensional alternating one-marker automata.

The role of pressure pulsatility in the arterial pressure control by the carotid baroreflex was investigated by means of a mathematical model. The model describes the main hemodynamic properties of the cardiovascular system in pulsating conditions, the static and dynamic components of the carotid baroreflex, and their effect on systemic arterial resistance. heart frequency and systemic venous capacity. Experimental findings on the role of pressure pulsatility in the carotid baroreflex were reproduced in terms of a non-linear interaction between the static and dynamic components. Simulations of physiological experiments (mild haemorrhage, carotid occlusion manoeuvres, genesis of self-sustained arterial pressure waves) reveal that the role of pressure pulsatility is meaningful in response to those perturbations (such as carotid occlusion manoeuvres) characterized by different alterations in the mean and pulsating components.

Existing reflective object-oriented real-time systems typically provide the programmer with a single mechanism or policy. With the advent of a new generation of application software with demand for (soft) real-time behavior, this limited choice may not be sufficient. We propose a metalevel architecture, where an application can choose from different real-time mechanisms and policies, thereby configuring its real-time behavior dynamically at run-time. This allows the adaptation to requirements that are not anticipated during application development. An example from the field of multimedia systems motivates our approach. We achieve this adaptability by structuring our metalevel into separate entities concerned with the support of different areas such as active object models, scheduling, and synchronization. These entities implement a variety of different real-time mechanisms and policies. This metalevel architecture is implemented using standard reflective mechanisms such as metalevel interceptions and metaobject protocols. Some preliminary performance figures give an impression of the price that has to be paid when our approach is used. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
