Banham:holds positions both as Director of the Machinery Automation Systems Department of the Naval Ship Systems Engineering Station and as Assistant Chairman of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department of Drexel University's Evening College where he holds the rank of Adjunct Associate Professor. He is the author of a text on Numerical Methods Applications in Engineering. In addition to numerous technical papers he is also the author of the ISA film on Boiler Feedwater Control Systems. A registered professional engineer in the state of Pennsylvania Mr. Banham is co-author of a forthcoming handbook on preparing for the Professional Engineering Examination in mechanical engineering. Mr. Banham holds a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the Pennsylvania State University his graduate studies were taken at the University of Pennsylvania. He is currently a member of the American Society for Engineering Education and the Instrument Society of America. He served as a member of the ISA Education Committee from 1964 through 1973 and as a member of the ISA Power Plant Dynamics Committee since 1969. His service on the latter committee includes terms as Executive Secretary Vice-Chairman and Chairman. Among other honors Mr. Banham was the winner of the Naval Ship Engineering Center's first Technical Achievement Award (1963) Technical Publication Award (1974) and Equal Employment Opportunity Award (1978). He was also the recipient of Drexel University's Laura S. Campbell Award for Excellence in Teaching (1978). He has taught undergraduate courses in classical control theory numerical methods computer programming systems design and analysis and instrumentation. One of the most serious problems encountered in Naval steam plants following World War II was the unreliable performance of boiler and main feedpump pneumatic control systems. In addition to control component and system design deficiencies, these control systems suffered from inadequate methods to measure and adjust system alignment. This paper describes the development of a set of procedures for on-line alignment verification (OLV) of pneumatic main boiler and feedpump control systems. The procedures are designed for use by N avy control system technicians and, in addition to on-line alignment verification, provide guidance for troubleshooting and for performing system alignment. Procedure static checks measure steady state steaming performance and OLV procedure dynamic checks measure the ability of the boiler and control systems to respond to load changes. The paper describes typical control system characteristics that influence OLV procedure content and the supporting analysis that was used to establish alignment criteria ranges that satisfy both steady state and transient performance requirements. Also described is the alignment criteria tolerance analysis along with the steps involved in a typical OLV check procedure development. Descriptions of the various OLV checks, troubleshooting procedures and alignment procedures are provided. Typical shipboard implementation requirements are described and experience to date with the procedures is provided along with a status report on OLV procedure implementations.

The computer as an artistic tool

This paper is based on the belief that science and art are not necessarily “two cultures”, but can be combined successfully as a result of their inescapable influences upon each other. A brief justification of this position is presented with some emphasis on artistic investigations using the computer. The machine's merits are viewed not only as a means of mass communication or of producing pictures, but also as a potential modelbuilder for the formalization of aesthetic concepts. The remainder of the paper details recent and current research on such uses of the machine—in particular the use of a computer as an artistic tool. The work completed was concerned with the possibilities inherent in using computer plotted output to solve problems similar to those which an artist solves in manual drawings or paintings, particularly a problem known as “readability of surface”. An account of the program parameters and methods that were used to produce the plotted drawings is given and the results are discussed. Current research is then outlined. This new work involves an attempt to algorithmitize basic design concepts, working firstly with the idea of “balance”. The concepts and the methods to be used in experimenting with balance are explained. It is important to note that all the work is being carried out in co-operation with a professional artist. The hope is that the artist will be stimulated, by the many alternatives provided by the computer, in the exploration of design. Furthermore, it is hoped that eventually it will prove possible to formulate clearly some of the traditionally vague design concepts. A program structure for event-based speech synthesis by rules within a flexible segmental framework

A program structure based on recently developed techniques for operating system simulation has the required flexibility for use as a speech synthesis algorithm research framework. Synthesis is possible with less rigid time and frequency-component structure than with simpler schemes, and it allows much of the speech knowledge required for synthesis to be removed from the main driving structure and embodied as tables and procedures that may easily be modified or replaced. The program also meets real-time operation and memory-size constraints. The resulting view of speech structure, at the acoustic-segmental level, is that of time-ordered, perceptually relevant events, and is related to that used in the author's work on automatic speech pattern discrimination. The flexibility of the scheme for synthesis, and the excellent mutual independence of the many processes, with differing objectives, that must be run for realistic approximations to real speech variation, have proved a welcome release from earlier problems. © 1978, Academic Press Inc. This paper describes the use of a digital computer in the design of concrete mixes for large construction projects. The salient features of a program called CONMIX are outlined, the nature of input data and output arc discussed, and a flow chart of the program is included. The basis of the program is the absolute volume method, using various design tables as given in the latest revision of ACI Standard, "Recommended Practice for Selecting Proportions for Normal-Weight Concrete (ACI 613-54)." The paper is concluded by illustrating the use of the program with three typical examples, and by discussing its field applications. © 1972 American Concrete Institute. All rights reserved.

The book focuses on the stiffness modeling of serial and parallel manipulators It presents fundamentals and enhancements for Virtual Joint Modelling (VJM), Matrix Structural Analysis (MSA) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The described techniques consider complex kinematics with numerous passive joints, different types of loadings, including essential loadings leading to critical changes in the manipulator configurations, linear and non-linear stiffness analysis, conventional and non-linear compliance error compensation and stiffness parameters estimation from virtual experiments. Presented enhancement for the VJM integrates in the stiffness analysis external force/torque applied to the end-point, internal preloading in the joints, and auxiliary forces/torques applied to intermediate points. The proposed technique includes computing an equilibrium configuration corresponding to the external/internal loading and allows obtaining the full-scale non-linear force-deflection relation for any given workspace point. This enables the designer to evaluate critical forces that may provoke non-linear behaviours of the manipulators, such as sudden failure due to elastic instability (buckling). The presented enhancement to the MSA allows users to carry out stiffness analysis for serial underactuated structures and over-constrained ones with multiple closed loops. To increase the model accuracy of the VJM and MSA techniques a dedicated FEA-based stiffness model parameters identification technique is introduced in the book. It is based on the virtual experiments in the CAD/CAE environment and allows the VJM and MSA to achieve accuracy comparable with FEA, but it essentially reduces the computational effort, eliminating repetitive re-meshing through the workspace. All considered stiffness modelling techniques, kinematic particularities and loading conditions are illustrated with practical examples and related analysis.

Evolutionary algorithms can benefit from their association with local search operators, giving rise to hybrid or memetic algorithms. The cost of the local search may be prohibitive, particularly when dealing with computationally expensive functions. We propose the use of local approximations in the local search phase of memetic algorithms for optimization of cost functions. These local approximations are generated using only information already collected by the algorithm during the evolutionary process, requiring no additional evaluations. The local search improves some individuals of the population, hence speeding up the overall optimization process. We investigate the design of a loudspeaker magnet with seven variables. The results show the improvement achieved by the proposed combination of local learning and search within evolutionary algorithms. © 2007 IEEE.
