In the modern era, understanding the costs and implications of conflict extends beyond traditional kinetic boundaries into the cyber realm. While economic analysis has historically been concerned primarily with the state's ability to sustain and engage in physical warfare, recent research has begun to quantify the additional societal and collateral costs. To shed light on the total costs of the use of cyber weapons and capabilities, we argue that a comprehensive analysis must be done using econometric tools. This paper describes two important tools in this toolkit, counterfactual analysis and bottom-up accounting, in the context of cyber conflict. It discusses how significant collateral costs manifest in the inadvertent aftermath of vulnerability stockpiling for use in cyber weapons, coupled with the losses and thefts of these resources. Such incidents represent not only a direct financial burden but also erode the trust and goodwill of nations who do not disclose the discovered vulnerabilities. Finally, multiple data sources and bottom-up accounting techniques are used to conduct a case study estimating the aggregate societal cost of cyber conflict in the Ukrainian war between late 2013 and 2020. The aggregate cost of the 76 recorded cyberattacks is estimated to be approximately $160M. The paper presents a description of the research methodology dedicated to a two-step discretisation process applied to the input numeric data, with combining the characteristics of selected supervised and unsupervised algorithms, which leads to extended processing of some attributes in train and test sets. The methodology was illustrated with the investigations carried out in the domain of stylometric analysis of texts, for two datasets prepared for the task of binary authorship attribution. The several variants of transformed input data obtained were subjected to exploration using two selected machine learning methods capable of inducing knowledge from both continuous and categorical forms, namely the PART and J48 classifiers. The results from the experiments indicate that, as can be expected, supervised transformations of data work well enough, however, they do not always return the best outcome. The two-step processing of some attributes shows sufficient promise to warrant a closer study, as opposed to always unconditionally relying only on supervised algorithms as outperforming all other approaches. © 2023 The Authors. A continuous dynamic model for the development of a gas field is studied. Two mathematical problems are posed, solved and analyzed. In the direct problem, we are looking for the maximum accumulated profit on a set of temporary functions of a certain type. In the inverse optimization problem, we define the entire set of planning horizons. We subject the assigned tasks to a comprehensive analysis. © 2022 IEEE.

Decision reducts and rules belong to forms used for the representation of knowledge learnt from input data while using a rough set approach in the exploration stage. As with any patterns that capture properties of data, the size is considered as the most important indicator of their quality, as a more general and concise description allows for improved understanding and simplified interpretation. The size of a reduct is given by its cardinality, and for a rule it is a number of included conditions, both referred to as lengths. These lengths undergo transformations along with data transformations, so such processing as discretisation leads to changed characteristics of existing patterns and through them also reducts and rules. The paper presents research with contributions in the observations focused on the influence of supervised and unsupervised discretisation on properties of attributes, induced decision reducts, and rules, offering a deeper insight into relations among them. © 2023 The Authors. Global optimization aims to identify the most interesting solution in the overall space of search, which is known as global optimum. But in reality, it is a misnomer because it is only the best of all discovered solutions in the explored search space, which depends, in turn, on initial positions of searching points over possibilities space. Practically, it is impossible to cover the entire search space of an NP hard problem, in an acceptable time, whatever the method used, since the size of this space is generally excessive. That is what justify, currently, the increased use of metaheuristics based mainly on two mechanisms: exploitation and exploration. Exploration guarantees that the used algorithm will reach the widest possible extent of the undiscovered areas in the search space, whereas exploitation guarantees that such algorithm will search for the best solutions inside the most promising areas i.e. around the best local and global optimums. Authors study, here, different implementations of exploration and exploitation mechanisms used in 12 well-known nature inspired metaheuristics. This study compares the aforementioned metaheuristics using 4 uni-model and 9 multi-model benchmarks. Uni-model benchmarks are used to test exploitation while multi-model benchmarks are used to test exploration. Obtained results show the superiority of TSO metaheuristic to find the adequate balance between exploration and exploitation leading it to discover, always, global optimum or one of the best near global optimums. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Orbit NTNU's vision is to become the best place in Europe to learn about satellites by letting our members get hands-on experience with real-life engineering challenges. Because Orbit aims to be a place for educational, personal, and professional growth, the need for creating something our members believe in and want to work on becomes essential. The BioSat mission aims to make this vision a reality by creating the need for new technology, challenging both old and new members in multiple ways. The BioSat mission consists of a 3U satellite, where 1U is reserved for a payload that can facilitate biological research in microgravity. The primary motivation for the mission is to develop an open-source platform for research that can be utilized for microgravity research in space at an extremely low cost. The technology required to grow plants in one of the harshest conditions known to humanity will also have important implications for our own planet. Our ability to provide food for everyone is becoming increasingly difficult with an evergrowing population. This technology can be used in areas with limited resources, such as water scarcity, extreme temperatures, and poor soil quality. Creating solutions for low-cost plant research that is open-source will make it possible for others to iterate and improve on our design with limited resources creating a catalyst for inspiration. BioSat will not revolutionize the way we perform long-duration missions or grow food back on earth. This is a really complex problem that will need a lot more research, testing, and failure, which no mission can do alone. We are part of an international collaborative effort to which we are contributing. In this paper we will discuss the motivation and need for the BioSat mission and how we are making microgravity research more accessible to everyone by lowering costs and reducing complexity. Modified simulated annealing for university teacher course assignment considering socio-cultural constraints

This paper aims to address the complex challenge of course assignment for faculty members within a Saudi university, taking into account the socio-cultural constraints imposed by gender-based segregation between students and faculty. To tackle this challenge, a combinatorial optimization model is proposed, which includes a binary representation of the problem, constraints reflecting gender segregation, and an objective function designed to maximize faculty satisfaction. The model employs a Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm, supplemented with two neighborhood search heuristics (H1 and H2), to explore diverse combinations. Additionally, a greedy randomized adaptive search procedure Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) algorithm is implemented for comparative analysis, utilizing heuristic 1 for local search. Through the application of simulated annealing alongside both heuristics (SA_H1_H2), the optimal solution is achieved, resulting in a notable equilibrium of courses among faculty members. Objective 1 demonstrates the standardized deviation in workload distribution among faculty members, yielding a deviation value of 0.08. This study contributes to the field by proposing a novel approach to course assignment that explicitly addresses the gender-based segregation prevalent in Saudi universities. By integrating socio-cultural constraints into the optimization model and employing advanced algorithms, the study offers a pioneering solution to a previously unexplored problem domain. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2024.

Over the last decades, there has been growing interest in research in multiple and interdisciplinary fields of human-AI computing. In particular, approaches integrating human’s perspective and design with reinforcement learning (RL) have received more attention. However, the current research on RL may need to consider its enhancement from human-inspired approaches further. In this work, we focus on enabling a meta-reinforcement learning (meta-RL) agent to achieve adaptation and generalization, according to modeling Markov Decision Processes (MDP) using Bayesian knowledge and analysis. By introducing a novel framework called human-inspired meta-RL (HMRL), we incorporate the agent performing resilient actions to leverage the dynamic dense reward based on the knowledge and prediction of a Bayesian analysis. The proposed framework can make the agent learn generalization and prevent the agent from failing catastrophically. The experimental results show that our approach helps the agent reduce computational costs with learning adaptation. In addition to the system design, we have also extended further algorithmic improvement based on learning within a deep Q-network (DQN) implementations for more complicated future tasks, which compared replay buffers to possibly enhance the optimization process. Finally, we conclude and anticipate that integrating human-inspired meta-RL can enable learning more formulations relating to robustness and scalability, leading to promising directions and more complex AI goals in the future. © 2024 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Background: In this Innovative Practice Work in Progress, we present our initial efforts to integrate formal methods, with a focus on model-checking specifications written in Temporal Logic of Actions $(\text{TLA}^{+})$ , into computer science education, targeting undergraduate juniors/seniors and graduate students. Many safety-critical systems and services crucially depend on correct and reliable behavior. Formal methods can play a key role in ensuring correct and safe system behavior, yet remain underutilized in educational and industry contexts. Aims: We aim to (1) qualitatively assess the state of formal methods in computer science programs, (2) construct level-appropriate examples that could be included midway into one's undergraduate studies, (3) demonstrate how to address successive “failuresy” through progressively stringent safety and liveness requirements, and (4) establish an ongoing framework for assessing interest and relevance among students. Methods: We detail our pedagogical strategy for embedding $\text { TLA }^{+}$ into an intermediate course on formal methods at our institution. After starting with a refresher on mathematical logic, students specify the rules of simple puzzles in $\text { TLA }^{+}$ and use its included model checker (known as TLC) to find a solution. We gradually escalate to more complex, dynamic, event-driven systems, such as the control logic of a microwave oven, where students will study safety and liveness requirements. We subsequently discuss explicit concurrency, along with thread safety and deadlock avoidance, by modeling bounded counters and buffers. Results: Our initial findings suggest that through careful curricular design and choice of examples and tools, it is possible to inspire and cultivate a new generation of software engineers proficient in formal methods.
